It was lovely to soak in the onsen after hiking. I appreciated the extensive hair and body lotions that were provided. The facilities were very good. Staff did their best to understand our requests. The google translation certainly helped.

Small onsen on the first floor which is empty in the later hours, really good and various breakfast options, USB Ports at the bed. FamilyMart, KFC, McDonalds and a big grocery store are in walkable distance. You get a free drink, which is a very friendly gesture.
Just 40 metres from restored Edo-era post town Magome-Juku, Chaya Hotel has simple traditional rooms with futon bedding and a tatami-mat floor.

Loved the style of the dorm and the privacy curtains on each bunk and another for the pair. Location was ideal for exploring magome and the nakasendo trail. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were good and clean.

Lovely property, renovated school so was really interesting. There is an old sports hall where you can play basketball, a kitchen and lounge, an abandoned baseball court. Sumo ring, the list goes on. Three of the staff in particular, Yuki, Gai and Ayana were brilliant, extremely welcoming and funny, couldn’t do enough to help us and made our night.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious.
If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

We stayed in Nakatsugawa in order to spend time walking on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a good home base for doing so!
It’s possible to take a cab or a bus to the post towns to start your walk, or to end it.
Nakatsugawa is also known for its abundant chestnut snacks and sweets which we sampled and truly enjoyed.
It was really nice to be in a part of Japan that has fewer tourists and is more quiet.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa.
This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa. Frankly whilst it's quaint, picturesque and reasonably true to form it's frankly a bit of a tourist trap and quite crowded. The buildings are almost all souvenir shops or restaurant / tea houses. With a few exceptions many are selling the same stuff, usually at higher prices than can be bought elsewhere. Glad we went but won't return

As previously reviewed, we are still annoyed that we had to argue at length with the staff (over half an hour) to have the sofa bed made up with linen. Their policy apparently is to only provide linen when there are 3 guests sharing the room advertised as 'Double Bed plus Sofa' and confirmed in writing via booking.com that I had booked a room with 2 beds. The hotel was demanding further payment otherwise my friend and I were expected to share the bed. They eventually agreed to make an exception. The air con unit also only had instructions in Japanese and we found it impossible to turn it down The room was very small and the aircon unit sounded all night as if we were flying in an airplane.

Nakatsugawa was a very pleasant town with an excellent shopping centre and good restaurants. Soba noodle seem to be a specialty in many. It was also a handy base for taking a bus to Magome for the Nakasendo Way walk to Tsumago and in the opposite direction to Ochiai, via the historic stone-paved 800m road.

Our primary reason for visiting was the walk from Magome to Tsumago. It's a lovely outing. Very enriching to see Japanese countryside after the big cities of central Honshu. The quality and restfulness of Iwasu-so was an unexpected delight.
For western travelers a Japanese style room and Onsen can seem a bit uncomfortable. Magome Chaya is a lovely place. As we were visiting in the winter, it was cold in the room. Sleeping arrangements were futons on the floor and a thick down comforter that did keep you toasty. We had a shared bathroom, another thing westerners may be unfamiliar with. But the facilities were clean and comfortable. We had a meal plan that included breakfast and dinner, and the food was great. Traditional Japanese dishes served in Japanese style.
It was truly a pleasure to stay in this 110 year old traditional Japanese house. There were no other guests at the time and we had the whole house to ourselves. The house is tastefully furnished and there is even a new trail bicycle available for guests.
The host was extremely helpful and friendly. He offered to make reservations for us at a local restaurant and even drove us (at a time that best suited us) to the trailhead for our hike at Magome.
Loved the bright zen calm cosy design and ambience. Great lounge areas. Tatami room was all setup...spacious and clean. There was a ladies bathroom (2 showers) with private areas to get dressed. Close to station, local coffee place, great unagi restaurant and Valor supermarket and Starbucks. The front desk lady was super helpful and friendly. She recommended me a nice onsen too (Nakatsugawa Onsen Yubunesawa)
What a fantastic stay we had!!! Keiko is a fantastic host, who cooks like a dream. Our favourite stay of our 3 weeks in Japan. The room we had was spacious and spotless. We walked to Tsumago and got the bus back so stayed 2 nights rather than doing baggage transfer. Use Nakatsugawa train station and get the bus to Magome Cannot recommend this place enough.
Beautiful hotel in a beautiful part of the town, right on the Nakasendo Trail. Convenient parking. So much charm and character and the staff were lovely and super helpful. Dinner and breakfast were both amazing - definitely recommend getting these! Very comfy futon and pillow, decent sizeroom with large cupboard for bags.
We had a wonderful stay. The hotel is very nice and clean with friendly staff. The breakfast was great, a good selection of Japanese food. The location of the hotel was good in the center, and everything was within walking distance. We will definitely come back when we are in the area again.
Very clean, warm and comfortable during the winter, they have coffee tea for free, nedoko have a small kitchen with good stuff..
They have laundry coin too, and the best part, you must choose room with mountain view.. its super beautiful, and the futon is the best from nedoko..
Spacious apartment with our own kitchen and extremely comfortable futons (best of our trip by far!). Though there is no food available there, they were proactive in making us a dinner reservation in town. Host even hand delivered our luggage to our next hotel in Tsumago.
Well looked after. A business style hotel, but, as a foreign tourist visiting over new year, the staff made sure I had what I needed to do some hiking and where to eat. The onsen, a daily ritual for many domestic visitors, was a treat. Helpful and kind.
It was great staying in a traditional Japanese home from the 1600's. Dinner and breakfast were served to our "house" and the onsen was great as well. It is nice spending some time away from a city or town. You are surrounded by nature!
The host Keiko was so warm and inviting, and did everything to make sure we had a wonderful stay. The location and home were perfect, and the food was some of the best we’ve had in Japan. We feel so lucky to have been able to stay here.
Great walkable location from train station and to coffee and restaurants. Clean, good value, nice onsen, had a laundry machine. Seems like a newer hotel. Easy to book through Booking.com and alter reservation as needed.
Incredible location, the guesthouse is small (only a few rooms) which makes it a very peaceful and relaxing place. The hotel stuff was very helpful, the room was super cozy and clean. Definitely would recommend!
A small but very cozy family run inn right in the center of town. Great value, really delicious breakfast and dinner. The hinoki bath is a must. Perfect place to stay while exploring the Nakasendo trail.
Our host was very accommodating, he helped us make a booking for dinner and also drove a friend who was staying elsewhere back to his hotel for a small fee - that was really appreciated.
Great location for all services.
Receptiin and bar staff helpful and friendly.
Bonus was the Japanese evening meeting with locals and enjoying conversation with interesting locals.
