Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.
The Pub across the road does not serve food. There are several places to eat roughly 1 mile away, a 15 minute walk. The Mayflower Village Pub served excellent meals and drinks. Ristorante Italiano also served very good Italian food. There is a Subway close by that is open for breakfast. We Ubered from the bus station and to the cruise terminal.

We went to Southampton to go to the Mayflower theatre which is good value compared to London theatres. It has lots of shows and good facilities. We will go back. We also had a good dinner at Papillon which is opposite the theatre. We stayed at the Ibis which is good value and well located for the Mayflower.

If visiting Southampton stay closer to city centre.
If visiting Southampton stay closer to city centre. This hotel was practically surrounded by a building site. Drink were extortionate, limited food available not as described on website. Saving grace lovely reasonable pub/restaurant within a few minutes walk.

We stayed in 003.
We stayed in 003. Very spacious but this is what facilities I should have had.
The spacious family room features a tea and coffee maker and a seating area, as well as a private bathroom boasting a bath. The well-equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, kitchenware, a microwave and a toaster. This family room features a sofa, heating and a flat-screen TV. The unit has 2 beds.
All we got was the tea & coffee making facilities. Table in there but nothing else.
Rooms spacious but found lounge & beds very uncomfortable. Thankfully only stayed the one night.
Quiet & grounds lovely.
Loved loved loved asolutely everything!! Completely Surpassed every expectation I had. All the little details throughout the rooms and in the hotel helped make the stay. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and were always so helpful. Brekkie was divine, lunch on the terrace just as good, the way it is set out with the restaurant, lounge and terrace is perfect. If you get the chance to go,go!! I'm already looking into booking my next visit, it was that good. Thank you Southampton Harbour Hotel for a perfect stay 😊
Wonderful apartment right off High Street - we loved our king bed with a nice view towards Town Quay Park, and our own private bathroom off the hall, across the room. Great location, walkable around the old city with its interesting past, its many still-intact walls, and Titanic history. Joe was very personable, and we enjoyed some interesting chats together. We appreciated the morning coffee, cereal and toast before starting our day. Would definitely stay again at Joe's place if we are ever back in Southampton!
My wife and I booked this hotel as a stopover to Southampton to start our cruise. It’s an ideal location. For travellers to cruise terminals. The hotel itself is stunning, it has obviously undergone a lot of renovation and the decor is stunning whilst in keeping its original features. The staff were fantastic , especially Nick . The breakfast ( not kidding) was perfect , Bacon was cooked to perfection
The Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel was great. The room was beautiful and they accommodated my mobility issues by putting me on the first floor. Perfectly located 5-10 min walk to a major shopping outlet and 5 min walk to the waterfront. You have incredible dining options right outside the Hotel door.
The bed was super comfortable. The views behind the hotel are incredible. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was so good, the staff went out of their way to happily serve us after seeing how we had such a long day of traveling before arriving. The proximity to the port was nice.
It was convenient to both the bus station and not too far for the cruise port. The apt was just off a nice pedestrian area of stores and an ATM was steps away. I likes that there was a fan, as it was historically hot in England at the time.
I did not have breakfast at Moxy Southampton so can not comment here. The location was ideal as the hotel is right next to the station and city centre and has very good transport links in its vicinity. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Location useful for the university/Portswood highstreet. Member of staff on reception during the evening really helpful in sorting out some issues we had with bedding and the sofa bed. It was much cheaper than other hotels closer to town.
Dinner and breakfast was amazing, I am coeliac so needed gluten free and the waiting staff were brilliant , helpful and knew what I could and couldn't have. Comfy bed , nice view from room . Close to shopping at Southampton west quay.
The room and the breakfast buffet were great. Good and spacious room and good quality and varieties of food. I was pleasantly surprised with some sweet snack and drinks left in the room, courtesy of Leonardo hotel Southampton.
The hotel room was fine, clean, comfortable, lovely shower room, and you could control the heating temperature. the position was good with easy access off M271 and a straightforward run in to Southampton and Cruise Terminal.
What I liked about the property is that it’s a cheap hotel in a good location, with easy access to the city centre and shopping area. Very convenient location within just a few minutes drive to Paultons Park.
Hotel is beautiful, grounds are lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful. Dinner was fantastic and breakfast the next morning was great. Will definitely stay again when cruising from Southampton
We had an amazing room with a nice view. The hotel is very pretty and has lots of activities available in the lounge. Location is perfect, near the sea and town center. Very good experience 😊
Pleasantly surprised after my visit to the Holiday Inn in Southampton City. The property was clean, the room was comfortable and breakfast was lovely and fresh. Good price too.
I picked this hotel as the location was 20 minutes from everywhere I needed to go. the whole stay was enjoyable and will be booking again on my next trip to Southampton
It's one of the best hotels in Southampton if not the best and probably on the self of England it is excellent the staff everything is so so good excellent for money
Location is a short walk from Westquay or Southampton high street, Room also has a smart tv which is a bonus. All round good place to go for a short break.
