With its strategic location near the Canada–United States border and proximity to the bustling city of Montréal, Ottawa attracts visitors from far and wide. The city is a tourism hotspot, with its wealth of outdoor activities and cultural attractions.
The UNESCO-listed Rideau Canal, covering a stretch of over 200 kilometres, is the epicentre of both winter and summer activities in Ottawa. A popular spot for boating, canoeing and kayaking in the summer, this waterway turns into a winter wonderland in the colder months, when local authorities transform it into a massive skating rink. Come summer and you’ll find a plethora of things to do at this 19th-century canal – cycling along woodland paths, paddling on calm waters or picnicking on its banks. The Canadian Tulip Festival in May is also a popular event to attend in Ottawa.
The capital city of Canada is burgeoning with historical monuments, architectural masterpieces and beautiful museums. Stroll through Parliament Hill to visit the National Gallery of Canada, which houses a grand collection of European, Canadian and indigenous art. At Canadian War Museum, you’ll get a peek into the military history of the country, with cannons, tanks and other war-related displays.
From rafting on class III, IV and V rapids to tubing on calmly flowing waters, the Ottawa River offers a bevy of outdoor activities in or near the city. Dow’s Lake has rental pedal boats, canoes and kayaks while Fitzroy Provincial Park has hiking paths, swimming spots and cross-country skiing trails to enjoy.

Love Ottawa but it can be very busy.

Love Ottawa but it can be very busy. Love the location of the Les Suites as everything is within walking distance. The capital buildings, the river, the market, the park and lots of eateries and shopping.

We made the mistake of going to Ottawa in April as many places were closed until May. We made the most of it and went to other museums and were so pleased. The Diefenbunker was incredible and I highly recommend that as a MUST visit! Beautiful days made for great walks- city is safe and clean. Exceptional restaurants. Will visit again- in the summer!
I loved Ottawa!
5 April 2024
I loved Ottawa! Such a clean and friendly city. It's a little quiet at times and in certain areas, but just make sure to look for the lively areas like Byward Market, Westboro/Hintonburg, and Bank Street. Transit is pretty good. Lots of great restaurants.

A city full of fascinating museums and government-related buildings, many of which you can tour. Ottawa originally wasn't really on my destination list (a friend told me that stopping over for 1 day would be enough), but surprisingly I spent 3 days in the city and feel like I still had plenty left to see. You can tour buildings on Parliament Hill for free with advance reservation (eg: House of Commons, House of Lords, Supreme Court). There are also a lot of excellent museums like the Ingenium (science), Canadian Museum of History just across the river in Gatineau, National Gallery of Canada (art), and Royal Canadian Mint, just to name a few. A great place to learn more about Canada, what it means to be Canadian, and gain a lot of cultural and sociological insights.
As I said earlier, my trip to Ottawa was expensive.

As I said earlier, my trip to Ottawa was expensive. Wanted to add in the ticket and then having to walk. I do have a severe back problem and I have a handicap sticker in my window and I still got $125 ticket.
