About Split

Including tips for the best time to visit Split

Offering a pleasant mix of beaches, ancient landmarks and lively restaurants and bars, Split is a historical city located on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.

One of the top places to visit in Split is Diocletian's Palace – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that consists of the eponymous Roman emperor’s residence and garrison lodging structures. Located nearby are Saint Domnius Cathedral and Jupiter's Temple that were built in the third century CE. While in the area, consider visiting other historical highlights like the Golden, Iron, Silver and Bronze Gates. You can also stop at the Archaeological Museum, Ethnographic Museum and Mestrovic Gallery for insights into the city’s illustrious past.

Located along the Adriatic Sea, Split has a range of beaches to suit every type of traveller – from family-friendly sandy coves to pebbly stretches with a vibrant nightlife scene. At Bačvice Beach, you can splash about in the shallow sea or stroll along the concrete promenade lined with cafés. Those looking to go swimming will find the clear waters of Kupalište Bene very appealing. The picturesque beaches of Kašjuni and Firule are ideal for unwinding and soaking up the sun.

Split serves as a great base for island-hopping tours and day trips to Croatia’s famous nature reserves – Krka National Park and Plitvice Lakes National Park. Several popular islands like Hvar, Brač and Vis are also just a short boat ride away. Within the city limits, there’s Marjan, a scenic forest-park that offers views over the city, sea and islands.

Split is an absolute must see and stay in for at least two days if you are visiting the Dalmatian coast. It combines great views, beautiful architecture and a warm welcome from all staff. We visited end of April in the low season so it was not too crowded…

Plenty of cafes for drinks & eating out - watching the world go by! Historic city that has a vast amount of history to explore Adventure trips out to national park, island trips & quad biking - we did all these and it made the holiday so enjoyable The local buses are easy to navigate around the city and get out further - week ticket €20 Word of caution - review where you eat, as there are a lot of quick turnaround tourist venues that I found were not to a high standard

Perfect destination for a four-day break.

Perfect destination for a four-day break. So much to see and do. Lovely walks in each direction out of town with gorgeous views of the islands and pretty beaches. Lots of history and culture in the old town. So many fabulous restaurants and cafes. It's a vibrant city, but also relaxed and safe. I will visit again in summer for longer and next time and take day trips to the beautiful islands. A walk up Marjan hill is a must!

Split was much more than I expected.

24 April 2024

Split was much more than I expected. I was told that it was very touristy, but we found it to have tourists, but also many locals. The streets were clean. We really enjoyed Split. It has a great history and has been lovingly restored over the centuries. We parked our car in an outside lot for 3 nights with no issues.
