About Cagliari

Including tips for the best time to visit Cagliari

Cagliari is Sardinia’s historic capital city, split into four distinctive districts filled with majestic palazzi, seafront cafés and ancient ruins.

Each of Cagliari's districts shows a different side to the city. Castello is where you’ll find a labyrinth of age-old streets home to the medieval tower of Torre Dell Elefante and 13th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria. A walk through Villanova is recommended for lovers of street art, with many examples found along its quaint, narrow streets. The best nightlife is found in the Marina district, home to lots of waterfront cocktail bars and restaurants. Stampace is also a very lively area, with dozens of places to eat and drink dotted along the main street of Vittorio Emanuele II.

In the centre of Cagliari, you’ll find the city’s architectural centrepiece – the Roman Amphitheatre. Dating back to the 1st century CE, it once held ten thousand spectators who came to witness fierce gladiatorial combat. The city is also home to other incredible structures such as the Royal Palace, the Palazzo Civico and the Shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria.

Just a few minutes from Cagliari’s city centre is Spiaggia Del Poetto, a free beach offering eight kilometres of soft sand, water sports and kiosks serving food and drink. You can also hire pedal boats, deck chairs and parasols if you need some shade.

Weather was not nice, so we cannot really use the beaches or go the mountain (to much windy), but center and close surroundings of Cagliari are nice, wonderful views, walking in small streets. We recommend to take bus Nr.7, which is circular line. How the driver is driving thru small streets - respect. In any case is better for stay in the city to use buses - it'smore practical and ecological, cheap and good service, parking is anyway difficult.

Excellent small town, which is very pleasant to walk around, enjoy the architecture and food. In general, there is not much to do in it, except to spend time by the sea and on the beaches. 3 days is fully enough to see all parts of the city.

Loads of walking up.

17 April 2024

Loads of walking up.and down hills and stairs. Easy to get around and all nearby. Loved the narrow streets and Marina. Great cycling tour of the city to Poetta beach. The Botanical Gardens were fantastic - well worth the visit. The public civic gardens were lovely and so well maintained by the hard working crew. Also the art gallery at the end of it was small but beautiful.

A wonderful old world city oozing with charm.

17 April 2024

A wonderful old world city oozing with charm. Very walkable, but hilly, with many sights and attractions with easy access. Good bus system and reasonable taxis. A large selection of restaurants, shops and supermarkets for every want or need. An excellent base for exploring Sardinia.

A truly Mediterranean city, warm and full of life and positive vibes. It's history and culture deserve much more respect than it actually receives. Some spots are neglected (particularly Bastione San Remi), the roads are not in the best shape and overall there is a sense of neglect. Luckily the locals with their helpful attitude make up for the minuses which most probably are created by the local authorities.

Easter is a good time to visit, warm but not too hot.

Easter is a good time to visit, warm but not too hot. Cagliari is quite hilly, we took a tuk-tuk tour, €70 for one hour, well worth the money to see all the key highlights in the town without being too strenuous.
