About Milan

Including tips for the best time to visit Milan

Despite having centuries worth of history, Milan prides itself on being Italy's most contemporary city and fashion capital. Its ancient Duomo is just one of many churches dotted around the city, and you'll also find a variety of museums, world-class theatres and established opera houses such as La Scala.

To discover the city's history, head to the red brick Castello Sforzesco, where the prominent Sforza-Visconti families of Milan once resided. Today, you'll find several museums inside, one of which features the Rondanini Pietà – Michaelangelo's final work. Continue your exploration onto the street of Corso Magenta where you'll find many trendy cafés and impressive examples of Milanese architecture like the Palazzo Litta. But the highlight lies within Santa Maria delle Grazie church and convent, which houses Leonardo da Vinci’s stunning mural, 'The Last Supper'.

To combine the best of shopping with striking architecture, then look no further than Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Set inside a glass-domed, 19th-century palace, this mammoth shopping mall features an intricate mosaic floor lined with designer brands like Louis Vuitton and Prada.

Milan's main international airport is Malpensa, with transfers available by express train, bus and taxi.

Lovely city, much more sedate than Rome.

Lovely city, much more sedate than Rome. We walked everywhere we wanted to go. The Duomo and The Last Supper do not disappoint. I recommend booking a tour for the Duomo so you may go to the rooftop and avoid lines. The tours are not pricey. Reservations for The Last Supper are required. Don't forget to walk through the Santa Maria della Gracie. Castello Sforza is huge - set aside at least a couple of hours. We were there for four nights and I am eager to go back.

Lovely.

30 April 2024

Lovely. Nice people, food, shopping and entertainment. Great transport links between the airport and the city. Express train is 13 euros each way. Once on ghe Metro you can use a card to tap in and out. Plenty to do for a long weekend. One word of caution, we went in April 2024 and the mosquitos were a nightmare. Bring sprays and don't open the windows. Cover arms and legs in the evening. There are loads of good restaurants around the Duomo. Luinos is good for a street food lunch. Don't worry about the queue because it moves quick.

Milan is a great city for shopping, comparable to New York City. You can find everything and shops are open until late. There is some historical sightseeing, but most of the tourism in Milan is about shopping or visiting cultural venues, and modern exhibits like the Prada foundation, Palazzo Reale, and the Trienalle.

Milano is a historical place that one has to see it.

Milano is a historical place that one has to see it. The Duomo is million $ worth seeing and there are so many other places to visit and get positive emotions from. I would gladly return to visit Milano - historical place but with a vibe of a modern metropolitan city.

Milan is a city that is best as a base to visit other attractions. We visited Verona, Lake Garda and Lake Como which are all very accessible and within an hours travel . One of our main reasons for visiting. We also went to the thermo spa whilst we were there which is worth a visit. The Duomo Cathedral is exceptional and we went on the roof top tour which was magnificent with great views over the city. Although you can take the lift up so far there are further steep steps to climb and it’s a stepped decline down from the roof. Therefore, you need to be agile enough to do this. Apart from the cathedral and the castle there isn’t a lot to do within the city. We took the open top bus tour and only got off at the canal. This was a stylish area with a bohemian feel and a great canal side market. Lots of eateries and coffee shops to choose from. It is a real shame that nearly all the old magnificent buildings in the city area are covered in graffiti which gives the city a scruffy vibe. They clearly have a problem with antisocial behaviour and groups of “pick pockets” are visible hanging around in the main tourist areas especially the main Duomo square. There is a heightened police presence . However, you do have to be vigilant at all times.

We have been coming to Milan for the past 25 years.

28 April 2024

We have been coming to Milan for the past 25 years. The people are friendly and helpful, and Milan is a magnificent city. The food is top - top, from the best restaurants to the little neighborhood cafes. There are no bad meals in Milano, only better and best. There is so much history, but there is also so much energy and design to fill your days.
