About Lisbon

Including tips for the best time to visit Lisbon

Perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is one of its most enchanting cities. Walk through any one of its cobblestone streets and there's a good chance you'll come across some traditional fado music or pastelarias serving fresh pastéis de nata (custard tarts). The old-fashioned tram 28 is one of the last of its kind still operating in the city, and provides a unique way to the popular districts of Graça, Alfama, Baixa and Estrela.

The central district of Bairro Alto is a great place to try out some of the local cuisine the capital is famous for. Try some bacalhau à Brás (shredded cod with onions, eggs and potatoes) or cozido à portuguesa (a typical stew).

To take in a blend of history and panoramic sights, pay a visit to the ancient castle of São Jorge and the Santa Justa Lift. Lisbon is also home to Ponte Vasco da Gama – the longest bridge in Europe – and the sister bridge of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Ponte 25 de Abril.

Lisbon is renowned for its surfing spots like Carcavelos and Costa da Caparica, with many offering long sandy beaches.

What a fabulous place to visit!

30 April 2024

What a fabulous place to visit! People are friendly, prices are reasonable, food is delicious, our hotels were 5 star and were fabulous. We did a Viator food/culture tour which was super interesting and fun. We stayed in Lisbon and did day trips to Porto and Sintra. My only thing I'd change would be to stay a night in Porto because it's 3 hours by speed train each way and was a lot to do in one day. If you walk a block or two away from the tourist area in Lisbon and can find more authentic (less touristy) restaurants it really added to the experience. I can't wait to go back, I loved Lisbon.

For getting around Lisbon I would suggest taking certified taxis, Uber, or Bolt. For pictures, if you walk up the stairs to the main street and go left on main street & keep walking, you will come across several picture worthy spots overlooking the city, see Pink Street (Recommend mid-dayish as you will want sun on the umbrellas, and walk down to the water. Go left to see a famous statue & the castle and go right to see other things. Make sure to keep going along the shore. Make sure to go past the ferry terminals. If you follow the water again you will go towards another monument that is very famous in Lisbon. It is in the same direction as the big red bridge that crosses the water. Also, make sure to take the ferry across the water and walk to the right when you get off the ferry. It is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset and takes about 20minutes to reach on foot. You can also eat there but make sure to reserve as spots are highly sought after.

We’ve been a few times before so focused on Belém and Baixa for this short visit with friends. A visit to Pastéis de Belém is a must-see-do-taste. Fabulous, typical Portuguese lunch at O Prado, Rua da Junqueira Belém. Lovely surprise at the Casa do Alentejo (Rua das Portas de Santo Antão) with our Sagres and petiscos – a visit from an Altentejano choir and we managed to view the upstairs function room! Fabulous service and tasty cheese and meats at Honua (Rua dos Fanqueiros) all washed down with a very special Alvarinho. Finally, unexpected last-minute visit on Sunday lunch-time to the Mercado in Campo d’Ourique – we’ll do this again another time on a Saturday as it looks fabulous.

I liked everything.

29 April 2024

I liked everything. The highlight of my trip was the boat trip on the Tagus which was beautiful.I also got a surprise view of the changing of the guards? in the Imperial Park opposite St Jeronimos. Because I was a bit nervous I didn't have a great appetite but I had some lovely sardines in tomato sauce near the cathedral. The metro is great so easyt to understand.I was lucky the 727 ran near my hotel to St Jeronimos. The combined bus and boat trip(yellow) was great.I enjoyed the wine!

Beside the touristic attractions of the city and its beautiful architecture I would enfasise the wonderful food and reception portuguese people offer you. It's a very interesting city were you can see its population valuating its tradition and at the same time beeing absolutely inserted in a up to date contemporary life in a regular way with no extremes. I've got several favorite places and I will name two of them: The Botanical Garden and the "Jardim do Tojal". It's very easy to go and get around LIsbon.

A nice apartment.

27 April 2024

A nice apartment. Close to our dentist and to where I love staying, in a less touristy area, an area with a somewhat higher class (Avenida Novas or Saldanha) I am very sensitive to hard beds, so they have a sofa with another upper mattress, that we moved to our main bed, and made the experience of a softer bed very nice. No key, only codes to access the main door and also for the apartment door, which we loved.
