Kusatsu
Set in Kusatsu, 47 km from Jigokudani Monkey Park, Private hot-spring Villa in Kusatsu offers accommodation with a hot spring bath and a hot tub. This property offers access to a balcony, free private parking and free WiFi. The property is non-smoking and is located 15 km from Mt. Kusatsu Shirane. This place is set in a lovely green and quiet part of Kusatsu Onsen. We took the taxi up from the bus station, because we had read the hill was quite steep. The taxi was only 600 Yen and well worth it because the entire area is hilly and we would not have been able to push our heavy luggage up. We loved the quiet surroundings, the comfy beds and the spacious kitchen and kitchen table. Sitting on the patio and listening the the rustling leaves and birds was also calming. The onsen was amazing and squeaky clean, but initially very hot. We left the window open at night and it cooled down enough to have a nice soak. The place is huge and can easily fit in a group of friends or two families. There were 4 bedrooms, plus extra tatamis. The living room is spacious and I can see how this could be a great place for a weekend getaway for people looking to escape the hectic pace of Tokyo. There are 2 supermarkets in town, the best one being the one close to the bus station. The centre of Kusatsu onsen is about 10 minutes away on foot. We loved eating at the restaurants there. Some are very down to earth places that only serve a couple of dishes, others are very fancy. Kusatsu is a special place with it's outdoor foot baths, public onsens scattered round town, nature walks, temples and delicious food. Highly recommended!

It's quite a distance if you walk to the centre tho. Driving is fine.

This hotel charmed us with its ambiance from the moment we stepped inside. The proximity to the famous Yubatake and local onsens made it an ideal retreat. The hotel’s private onsen, while modest in size, has a lovely, intimate vibe. I got to enjoy it by myself which was a great experience. The level of service was amazing, with staff showcasing exceptional friendliness. The yukatas in our room were a thoughtful gesture that deeply enriched our cultural experience, making our trip feel even more special. I would stay here again!
The futons were comfortable - unlike many accommodations. The villa was spacious and clean. We enjoyed the onsen.
Amazing villa, very nicely setup for large groups. The entire, personal, onsen downstairs was amazing! While it felt a little way away from the main area of Kusatsu, it probably helped being away from the main source of the sulfur smell. (Make sure you keep the multiple doors closed down to the personal onsen to also keep that smell at bay!) Also, the location was walking distance to a great BBQ restaurant, amazing onsen, and a 7-11 for supplies. And the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. Very much recommended!
The staff were extremely friendly and attentive to details. Tried the new breakfast menu and was quite happy with it. U can get free ferry service to the village centre of Kusatsu but even without it, the centre is only a short walk away. Place was clean and new. Definitely recommend to others.
The location was gorgeous, and the staff were always very helpful and friendly. There were a large variety of baths to choose from and the outdoor baths had nice views of the river. There were also nice walking paths in the village.
A lovely ryokan near the center of Kusatsu onsen village. The staff were very friendly and the food we had at dinner and breakfast were wonderful
The hotel is similar to a family-run business. The owner and his staff are very friendly. They provide free pick-up and drop-off service from bus station to the hotel. The villa is very large and well-equipped. It has its own hot spring bath, which is very clean and comfortable
Nice location along the river, the onsen offered peaceful setting, enjoyed our evening stroll through the community. Meals were good and plentiful. It was a nice property but not stuffy or over the top luxurious. Staff were excellent and helpful. The room had a very nice layout with lots of room, nice sitting area, nice balcony overlooking the river. Everyone should experience a ryokan stay. It did not appear that they cater to overseas visitors.
This feels like a luxury hotel with a budget price. It is right next to the station and you can check in and out electronically using a screen so not speaking Japanese isn't a problem. The staff are very friendly though and helped me with all my questions. The room is good size and has a great view of the mountains. No complaints about the bathroom or anything. I recommend having breakfast which combines Japanese and Western cuisine, also unlimited coffee refills.
