Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.
Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.
The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!
A pretty, nice town. I liked the Roman bridge, the river, the sidewalk along the river, the Roman Theatre, amphitheatre, the Iberian bellota ham and pork. I had some good Iberian pork dishes, such as pluma, carrillada... So tasty! People are very friendly!

A day would not be enough unless you have the stamina. But it can be done.

Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre.
Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre. We also went on a trolley ride through the town which was fun and gave us a good view of the Roman Bridge and Aqueduct. Our hotel was not far from the Temple of Diana which was passed on the way to a really lively town square. Generally the atmosphere in Mérida was lively and fun. Loved it.

I'm a big fan of Roman history, and Mérida was the obvious place to stop over on my trip down to Andalucia from the UK. Temple of Diana and the aqueduct are both stunning, but sadly the amphitheatre wasn't open to visitors when I was there. A good excuse to return!

I loved the area near the Roman sites.
I loved the area near the Roman sites. The restaurants and shops were wonderful, and the area we stayed in near them seemed very safe. We spent about 3.5 hours at the Roman sites and history museum, but we could have used another 3 hours to explore the site in order to read the informational plaques at a leisurely pace and to people watch. We ate at La Casona, and the food was amazing, especially for the very reasonable prices. The portions are BIG, by the way. Don't miss out on trying the grilled goat cheese salad.

We had a pleasant one night stay as we were travelling from Santander to the Costa del Sol. Hotel staff were most helpful as we requested a room change. Everything was lovely and clean and the bathroom had a nice shower. There was plenty of choice at breakfast. The hotel is only a short walk away from the lovely town and there are plenty of places to enjoy a meal in the evening. There is a safe car park with shade.
This hotel has excellent location, right on the motorway - very convenient for travel - with petrol station right next door. They advertised 'a Restaurant' but it was more like a 24 hour cafe. HOWEVER, we ate there, it was very reasonably priced, clean, and service was good. The reception is manned 24hours.
Dogs are welcome which was great for us.
There are gardens and a pool but they were closed (Winter).
The hotel was very well located for visiting the Roman sites in Merida. It was on the main road which might be noisy at a busier time of year. There was a good tapas bar/restaurant in the old bull ring, 5 minutes walk away. There was free parking on site. The receptionists were friendly and helpful.
It is great location. Value for money is good. Staff is available through phone always. Room is good, sofa bed is also comfortable and fits 2. The place has all the amenities and we will definitely return here if traveling to Merida. Really close to a supermarket (Dia) and a children's park.
The location was perfect for us - close to the train station, a good supermarket and an easy walk to all the sites in Mérida.
The staff was friendly, helpful and explained everything including local suggestions.
The apartment was clean and well equipped.
A boutique type hotel located in the Centre of Merida. Without knowing about it we stayed on the last night of Emerita Lydica, the main event being 400m away from the hotel. which made finding a nearby restaurant harder (the hotel only provides breakfast)
Just 10 minutes walking and you are at the Museo Romano and the Anfiteatro. That's the best part of Merida.
Just under our balcony a lovely bar/restaurant. And 50 meter from Parador de Merida (the state owned traditional hotel)
Hotel situated on outskirts of Merida. Rooms as expected for this star hotel but some noise heard. Limited bar menu available, the entrecôte steak was superb.
Payment taken in advance so easy checkout.
It was 41 degrees when we arrived at Mérida so the little pool and the shaded garden sun lounger space was very welcomed. The hotel is gorgeous and breakfast was absolutely wonderful.
I would say that this hotel is one of the best I have ever been to from its location to their staff, to the service they offer, to the hotel’s facilities up to its cleanliness
Apartment, as always, clean, comfortable and well equipped. Excellent stopover for us travelling through Spain. Welcoming and professional staff. See you in 2023! Thank you.
