The guesthouse is located at the end of a small road right by the rice fields. It was very quiet and peaceful and I had a good night's sleep. The house is tastefully decorated and has all the amenities you would need, including a washing machine that you can use for a small cost. The host speaks good English and explained clearly about everything in the house. The room was clean and tidy, and the futon was very comfortable. I would recommend others to stay here.

Located in a quiet village off biwa lake, but not too far, we biked to there as we were doing round biwa trip. Owner offers free pick up from nearest train station. No worry that you don't have a car. But the place is for someone who like quiet stay. The nearest supermarket is 10 minutes bike away.
It is village house fashioned into a guest house. There is washing machine 200 yen per wash+dry! We washed our bike clothes. The bar like lobby allows cooking and meeting other guests.
Owner is very friendly. My friend was too tired to continue biking, she wanted to take a taxi to next guest house, owner provided a very doable solution: asked another guest whom we chatted at dinner time, also a biker in her home country to bike with me, saved my friend carrying her bike, and at the same time satisfying this guest 's plan to bike around. She went back by train. I said she was imaginative ! Everyone was happy.
She answered email, ie our needs promptly as she stays in her house a little away.

The kitchen area was covered in festering food stains, dried noodles, a used napkin, used towel, dirty sink, dirty fridge (with someone else's "egg" left inside). Dirty shower, someone else's used towels left hanging behind the door. Used bed sheets and pillows that smelt like perfume and greasy hair, and sticky stains on the floors, upstairs and down. I wiped up a spill of what I *think* was shampoo from under the dining table. It's the only place we have ever cut and run due to being unwilling (unable, honestly) to cook our food, shower comfortably, or even get undressed to sleep. (We slept in our clothes, with towels over the dirty pillows).

Felt like a resort town for Japanese (baby-boomers). Felt like a very affluent area. Beautiful sunset. Quiet farming/tourism town. Lovely place. Not a high-profile touristy place, but if you like small-town Japanese tourism, this should be checked out. I'm planning a bicycle run around the lake next time I visit. There is a nice road-bike rental shop at Maibara station.
