Little out of the way of the busiest part of town but still less than 5 mins from most major attractions. Dated but extremely well taken care of. English speaking staff. Great Japanese style breakfast.

Great location at Arashiyama. The room is spacey enough, a bit dated of course but well-maintained and managed. The public bath is clean and spacious, which is a plus for me. Meals were delicious, refreshing, and traditionally Japanese. Staffs...

The staffs are very friendly! A lovely lady served me for my meals and she’s the sweetest person. We exchanged short conversation with my basic Japanese.

Property information

Estimated Locations of Ohi-Rikyu Palace(Emperor Kammu's Villa) This is the presumed site of the Ohi-Rikyu Palace, which was frequently visited by Emperor Kammu, who is known to have moved the capital from Nagaoka-kyo to Heian-kyo. In "The Tale of Genji", the 18th chapter "Matsukaze", which was written in the mid-Heian period(AD1008), a house near the Ohigawa River is the setting. Akashi no Kimi, who is favored by Hikaru Genji, and her daughter, Akashi no Himekimi, are invited to live together at Nijoin Temple, but they are reluctant to accept the invitation because of their low origins. Akashi no Kimi's father, Akashi Nyudo, therefore rebuilt a mansion near the Ohigawa River (the villa of his maternal grandfather, Prince Nakaginomiya) to make it easier for Akashi no Kimi and her daughter to move to Kyoto. It is said that the house "across the Ohigawa River" where this event took place was where this museum is located today.
