The castle then the Royal mile and then on to Holyrood. What a wonderful two days. Don;t forget to visit the underground chambers under the South bridge halfway down the Mile. This tour must be booked before hand.
As a McLellan, how could I not get seduced by the Royal Mile. My sister got fitted for a kilt and I got some amazing bag pipe music which I enjoy to this day. Scotland has been eclipsed by England for so long, it is just wonderful to see the popularity of Scottish culture and history. London is impossible. Edinburg is manageable. I fear to recommend it for fear of spoiling it. Now if we could only do something about the weather.
Blocked to traffic during the festival, so walking was necessary. It could be hard for those who have trouble walking. But it is a dramatic sweep up to the castle, chockablock full of shops, pubs, restaurants, and things of historical significance.
Great shops in the heart of the city, lots of things packed into a small place. Some are very pricey, but on the whole you can find decent lower priced gifts/souvenirs (we did). Great buildings and architecture.
The Royal Mile is quite hilly, Lots of cobblestones and uneven surfaces due to the age of the road. Lots of interesting buildings to visit e.g. Edinburgh Castle, Scottish Parliament building, the Palace of Holyrood, St. Giles Cathedral. Be prepared for lots of tourists and 'tourist shops' selling tartan items, shortbread and whisky.
If you are here during the Fringe, check out the walking tours done by volunteers who are based at the Council offices. These guys know so much more than the commercial tour guides do and they have the inside access to places no other tour guide had.
Good location 5 minutes off The Royal Mile, 15 minutes from the Castle and 20 from Holyrood House. We slept soundly. Breakfast was continental style and good. We stayed for 3 nights and because of covid were restricted to eat in the hotel of an evening. The menu was very limited as I doubt during normal times that many people eat in the hotel but we were able to choose a different meal each night and the quality and quantity were excellent.
Old Town, Edinburgh
The apartment was in a fab location, was a great size and had a brilliantly equipped kitchen all for an excellent price. The welcome pack was super with very clear instructions for all of the appliances. We could not fault the cleanliness/covid procedures. The Tesco Express just round the corner was very handy to pop out to and you were just a short walk away from the Royal Mile.
Old Town, Edinburgh
This Apart Hotel is situated in a perfect location at the bottom end of the Royal Mile. The room was very clean and well kept with many facilities including a fridge, kitchen and television. The bathroom was very clean and had a luxury feel. The staff were very friendly and the hotel offers discount for the multi-storey carpark nearby.
The hotel is located superbly on the Royal Mile, handy for all the major attractions of the City and close to a stop for the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus. Can't comment on breakfast as we didn't have one at the hotel but the staff were extremely helpful, cheerful and efficient.
The room was luxurious, clean and comfortable. The concierges were really helpful and the accessibility to the train station was perfect. The hotel is also within easy walking distance from the bus station and just off the Royal Mile so a great location!
The hotel was chosen because of its central location on the Royal Mile and because it has on site parking. The parking worked well and the location turned out to be superb. The room was very clean and we particularly liked the pillows on the bed.
Old Town, Edinburgh
This is a very nice apartment with views over the Royal Mile at Lawnmarket and very close to the castle. Beds are new and comfortable and there are good kitchen facilities. Pets allowed. Quiet even though in the city centre and warm.
Old Town, Edinburgh
The location of the apartment was perfect for visiting the Royal Mile and it was extremely clean and spacious for two people. The under floor heating in the bathroom was a really nice touch!
Perfect location just off Royal Mile, nice sized apartment with everything we needed, helpful staff, felt covid safe. Welcoming to a family with a cat! And great view!
The hotel is in a good location, around the corner from the Royal Mile.
Get away from the Royal Mile where tourists come to snap endless photos of token bag pipers wearing kilts. Walk to the Stockbridge neighborhood, full of beautiful flats, interesting shops and cafes. Walk to the old side of the city underneath the castle for pub crawling.
Walking from the Castle down the Royal Mile to Holyrood House with the new Parliament en route takes some beating in terms not just of historical content but also of ease of travel-it's a straight downhill walk. On the way talk to people-some of the locals actually know a lot about their City and take a pride in it.
St. Giles on the Royal Mile is several hundreds of years old. My family attended a pipe organ recital there one evening. What an awesome and thunderous sound that huge organ made, but could produce the most delicate melodies as well. Highly recommend taking some time to study the beautiful architecture as well as the gorgeous stained glass windows and the history surrounding this or any cathedral, for there is always a history to be known.
As a city Edinburgh is steeped in history, all the areas off the Royal Mile has a tale to tell. The city offers a number of good tours both by bus and feet for getting to know the past and how people lived. The city also offers an insight to famous personalities of the past such as Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Rabbie Burns
The royal mile has just about everything and the grass market
The Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, visit Rose Street for a good night out. Leith walk has a vast choice of very quirky cafes that offer a very wide selection of nice food and drinks.
