One of the best old towns we have visited. Great atmosphere, beautiful buildings. Wonderful riverside walks along the banks of the Charente. Good restaurants in town centre. Thoroughly enjoyed visit to the Hennessy distillery.

I spent the summer there and adored every minute.
I spent the summer there and adored every minute. It is on the river Charente and is a Cognac producing town like its neighbour Cognac. I prefer Jarnac. You can visit several producers the largest of which by far is the global HQ of Courvoisier in the main square. From June to end of August the campsite is open and so is the spotless outdoor swimming pool but men must wear swimming "briefs" not shorts. Hire a canoe , take a tourist boat ride, walk or cycle for miles along the river bank. Visit President Mitterand's family home. Have a superb very affordable set lunch in the main square. Every inch of summer countryside is coved by vines or sunflowers.

This is a town in 16220 in the Charente it is full of things to do and used as a base for a holiday there are hundreds of places near to visit. In the town they have public tennis courts at no charge, playing fields, children's park area with play house, water feature and other swingy things! The church is worth a visit, quite plain but old and interesting. There are many small shops and also two supermarkets. During July there is a giant Bric a Brac day and on the first Friday in August they have a night market that is definitely worth visiting, many stalls selling all sorts of things and a small fairground. There are a number of good places to eat, I will review them later!

We really enjoyed exploring the surrounding villages and discovering the considerable history and natural beauty of the area. The local restaurant, The Snack au Bord du Luc, was a short walk away and served a delicious meal and some delightful wines. It was well priced and the staff provided excellent service. My favourite village was Verteuil-sur-Charente where the grand chateau overlooks the beautiful river which meanders through the village.

A really lovely Charente town,one that started my love affair with france.its town centre is now shabby in places.the Saturday market was very disappointing.the river is lovely with some great views.it lacks some real quality restaurants in the centre.both main hotels are mediocre but ok for a short stay.

Very well appointed apartment in the heart of Jarnac. Easy walking to restaurants and bars and boulangeries in the morning. Despite being on the river there was no water noise once inside the apartment. Views over the Charente from the large roof terrace are amazing, particularly at sunset. The concierge service was also impeccable. Plenty of free parking only a short walk away in the centre of town or nearby side streets. Highly recommend this property if you’re looking for a base within the Cognac countryside.

The property is small but has everything you need to self cater apart from an oven which was not an inconvenience for us. The location was good for us for exploring the Charente area. easy access to both the outer ring road and town centre by car. it has its own parking space by the apartment. The WiFi worked well. The room was clean and very comfortable. We had a 'family' room with three beds which worked perfectly for us (three women). There was a little sitting area just in front of the room where you could sit and enjoy being outside. We opted for breakfast and had plenty to eat plus great coffee. The hotel is also very close to a wonderful restaurant (L'Olivette) where we had an excellent dinner. The hotel is located very close to the N10 highway which made our onward travel a snap.

Contacted on the day and given clear road directions as sat nav info was wrong. This made it very easy to find. Although it's behind a large shopping mall the chateau felt very rural with woodland walks, which was ideal for our dog. Breakfast was excellent. Would definitely stay again
