Monção is really a nice and quiet place. Well located to explore Minho region and specially to learn about the famous Vinho Verde Alvarinho. Easy to travel around and also to enjoy some Spa features.
Caminha is a lovely Portuguese fishing village at the mouth of the river Minho. Its historic centre is very nice and the restaurants in the village offer excellent value for money. It's the ideal location for a short break.
I wasn't really in Vieira do Minho. Was nearby, in Parada do Bouro. This whole region is just beautiful and an awesome place to take off into the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The whole place is full of hidden waterfalls where the water is crystal clear, forests overgrown with moss which give them this eerie but beautiful and cozy feeling. And every village around is just a great place to relax, as the whole zone is super laid-back and people are hyper hospitable.
I was on my Caminho Portuguese, so this was just a one nights stop over. But certainly worthwhile visit. Walking in Portugal, one gets the real country and landscape to see and to meet up with the locals.
Gerês usually mean great scenery, great food and nice people. Vieira do Minho is exactly that. Just in the outskirts of the national park which means that you are close enough to all the nature, but still with the commodities you need/want for a relaxed and confortable stay
Interesting location on the Portuguese/Spanish border. Seems like a crossing point for "el Camino de Santiago" trekkers. Beautiful Minho River may be crossed vía the old bridge intoSpain, without any checks. Would return to spend more time.
Small town in the north of Portugal with a very nice historic town center near the river Lima with plenty of good restaurants and shops. Surrounding area has plenty of vinyards. It has easy access to the Minho region and the Galicia region of Spain. We used it as a base to visit the fantastic Geres wilderness area.
Picturesque town! Loved the horse and buggy ride that takes you across the pretty stone bridge over the river...riverwalk is so peaceful, as is the music from the speakers as you walk along the river and bridge. Marketplace twice a week along the river was interesting, some nice choices for restaurants, and enjoyed the outside cafe's to sit and people-watch and watch the beautiful sunsets over the river. There are some small museums that were really interesting to visit, with a good venue using videos to explore inside of them. Many of the signs are also in English outside of the sites. A gem of a location to spend a couple of days in or use as a base to explore the Minho region!
We didn't only check out Monçao, but also went to Vigo, to the Cies islands, to Valença do Minho and to Tui. Monçao is nice and practical, but it's also located quite conveniently to visit the above mentioned places. We even went swimming in Salvaterra do Minho one evening, which is right across the bridge in Spain. We walked the last part of the Portuguese Camino De Santiago from Rubiaes to Tui. This was a nice route, but unfortunately it was impossible to get back to the starting point with public transport on Saturday. Maybe it's easier on weekdays, but we don't know that. Our favorite place to eat in Monçao is definitely pizzeria Don Genaro: extremely good food and drinks for a very economic price! We went there twice while we usually only eat local food on vacation!
I simply loved Braga. The city, the monuments, the churches, the restaurants and most of all the local people. The Bracarenses (citizens of Braga) are friendly, helpful and full of life. Braga became a modern city which organizes a lot of free events, especially during Summer. Some must-see in Braga: Bom Jesus, Our Lady of Sameiro Sanctuary, Tibães Monastery, Cathedral of Santa Maria de Braga, Raio Palace and University of Minho.
Beautiful views from Axis Ofir. The accommodation was really great. I had ocean views from the entire guest suite, including the balcony and even the shower. I had dinner in the restaurant and loved everything about it. Their cream of vegetable soup was very tasty. I had a salad and the pasta Primavera to finish out an extremely healthy, tasty dinner. In the morning I went to the breakfast buffet and enjoyed the assorted offerings, especially the fresh pastries. Great escape from walking the Caminho Portugués.
Moledo
This is a really nice place, and the hosts are superb! It is a big apartment with 3 sleeping rooms - and everything you need in best quality: full equipped kitchen, mini market 50m away, big bathroom with big walk-in shower, washing machine, and: a garden! Apart from walking the Caminho, you can enjoy the awesome beach 5 min away, take long walks to the next villages, hike or bike up in the forrest or mountains, also do surfing (with Kite or without). Very nice place to stay - one of the best from many trips.
Valença
Location, location, location! Located right in the heart of the old fort area but quiet at night. Comfortable and clean 1 bedroom apartment with a double bed and bunk bed in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the kitchen. Kitchen had oven and stovetop suitable for cooking in. Check in was done by keycode so was simple and easy. Communicating with host was quick. Internet was good as was hot water and water pressure. The apartment is right on the Caminho route. I recommend staying here.
Everything! The staff are amazing-very attentive to ensuring a comfortable, serene, and enjoyable stay. We were lucky enough to spend 5 nights at Hotel Paco de Vitorino. The grounds are beautiful and include a large pool. The bed was 10 out of 10 for comfort. . It felt like we were on a retreat, yet close enough to drive to Ponte de Lima, Ponte de Barca, Guimaraes, Braga & explore the Minho region. It was an unforgettable experience!!! Thank you!! Will & Lisa
The staff at Urban Hotel Estacao are SO lovely -- friendly and helpful. Also, the hotel is RIGHT across the street from the train and bus station, so it's perfect basically for going anywhere in the city or hopping on the train. I was there for a week-long workshop at Univ of Minho, and it was super convenient to catch a bus right to campus. Also the buses are all electric! It's about 5 minute walk to the city center. The breakfast is plentiful and fresh.
Ponte da Barca
What a lovely place! There is so much attention to detail at Lodges Minho. The owners have clearly poured their hearts into making this a sensational experience for their guests. The grounds and pool are beautiful. Our studio apartment was gorgeously decorated, extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. The location is an easy walk to restaurants. The hosts were very helpful and made us feel extremely welcome. Best stay in our trip to Portugal!
Apartment perfectly located if you need to go to Universidade do Minho. Kitchen well equipped, a big bedroom, living room and WC. Bed sheets, towels and hair dryer available. You can arrive whenever you want as it is self check-in. Nevertheless, if you have any problems, the hostess answers all your questions by message really quickly. I requested an invoice and received it promptly. I will book it again if I need to come back.
The hotel and the area it is located in is truly magnificient: The Minho region with it's many rivers and streams is lush and green all year round and this is the perfect base to start exploring from. The room was spacious and exceedingly comfortable, the staff were very attentive and the breakfast was plentiful. The only thing missing was some shaded parking, but it is free and readily available, so that is not a complaint.
Caminha
The hotel was in beautiful location, we could have walks both the river Minho straight across the road and the church and very beautiful old town just over the wall.the people working there were very welcoming friendly and helpful, the room beautiful- a welcome refuge on our caminho walk. The food was really good, top class and the people in the restaurant good fun also.., a very convivial atmosphere.
Viana do Castelo
Great apartment and a really really really great host - cant stress this enough. Nathalie is honestly one of the friendlist and most courteous persons I have ever met. The flat is very spacy, the kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. It is quiet and relaxing. The surroundings are great and most of the things can be reached by foot (supermarket, bar, cafe, beach, caminho).
Viana do Castelo
Senhor Antônio is a very kind and helpful host. The place is located a bit off the main road / caminho, surrounded by nature. Chicken and a horse come to visit on the main door. Breakfast includes good coffee, bread, cheese, ham and some homemade sweet things (doce de abóbora?). A big recommendation!
We were 2 pilgrims doing the Caminho & the hotel was on The Way and on the quiet end of town. . Spacious room with a large bathroom & terrace with a table. The spa offered a Pilgrim’s massage & Anna the masseuse was wonderful! The included breakfast was perfect with many choices.
Valença
Excellent and super clean accommodation. Nice croissants on tray as we continued our caminho journey next morning. Lovely bar and restaurant nearby just down steps from fort with very friendly staff too. Hotel was very helpful and responsive to any queries during our stay.
Everything was just perfect. The room was very nice and very clean, the staff was so nice to me and I just felt very comfortable and welcome after my hike on the caminho. Can‘t believe to get to stay in such a nice hotel for that good price.
Fantastic location and more like a good hotel than an Albergue. Beds really comfortable, lovely pillows and room very clean. The receptionist was very welcoming after a long day walking on the caminho.
Esposende
Very nice service, perfect location directly at the caminho and the city center, the rooms provide lot’s of privacy, even if they were shared. I would highly recommend this hostel!
Barcelos
Great design and organisation especially for caminho. Excellent location. Great breakfast on the top floor with great view. Loved Barcelos, and great hostel/guest house.
proper hotel right on the caminho. room was large and comfortable to relax after a long walking day. Location is great right by the center of town.
Vila Praia de Âncora
One of the more decent hostels I've visited on my Caminho Portuguese, shared a 6 men bedroom. Very friendly lady at the reception.
Esposende
the owner was the most enchanting person I have met on the Caminho. so interested, so willing to share her story and love of Portugal.
