You are unable to control the aircon to suit your own needs.

My partner & I had pleasant 4 night stay in the motel room. Our room was very spacious and clean. We had our own bathroom & toilet. We requested a quiet room away from the "backpacker" area & staff were accommodating. There's a floor kitchen which was clean & tidy. We felt very safe at Gilligans.

They had issues with AC in every room so it was freezing and everyone in the room ended up sleeping with 3 blankets. We had to open the balcony door everyday and keep it open just to let some heat into the room. Staff didn’t care too much to resolve the issue and I complained 3 times about this. Also I think I’d absolutely shocking that the wet t shirt competition is a thing here at this hostel. It completely takes advantage of young women and exploits them for money. It is disgusting that this is running every week the hostel should be ashamed. Laundry room is always full and when you do eventually get to use a washer or dryer someone will come and take your stuff out and chuck it on the side.

The place is amazing if you want to party! We had good food, good drinks, great atmosphere! The room was very simple but it was ok for one night!

The hot water was hit and miss. Sometimes you could have a hot shower sometimes there seemed to be no water for an hour or more. They advertise that the private rooms are at the top, so don't get noisy, but they are above balconies that a lot of people would meet on in large groups and listen to loud music. That said, they seemed to quiet down pretty quickly late at night, so I assume the hostel was pretty good at telling them to turn it down late at night.

The room was a very good size and the shower area was nice with hooks and a bench next to the shower. There are lots of good drink deals for people staying at the hostel. Lots of good shared facilities like kitchen and the pool etc. That said, the pool seems to be open to the public, so you don't need to stay there to use the pool.

There was no remote control for the AC in our room, so it's only on or off 😂 Our room wasn't very sound proof so we could hear them start cleaning out the rooms at about 7 in the morning, and since we checked in at 4am (due to our flight), that was a bit startling. But otherwise a very nice room and great value for the price

The room was large and clean The location was excellent, within walking distance of everything- Woolsworth, the reef feet terminal, city centre...etc Staff was very friendly and since we landed in Cairns in the early morning, the 24hr check in was really convenient as well

You have to pay room deposit key on arrival by credit card only. Can't pay with cash!!! Air-conditioning is controlled centrally via reception & the rooms are freezing!!! I asked for extra blankets & had three in the end, along with other travellers. Kitchen areas always dirty, unwashed dishes & worktops, but that's not the accommodation's fault but the guests who stay. Shower pressure, non existent. Shower door didn't fully close so floor constantly like a swimming pool.

Some cockroaches every day and a bit noisy due to the nightclub but there also seems to be some quieter rooms available— anyway, would I book it again? Yes.

Noise because of the night club, but it didn’t bother me that much, plus, you always can take free earplugs at the reception.

The location is amazing! Just 5 mins walk to the lagoon. Lots of restaurants and bars around the area. A room was clean, a bad was big and comfortable. Nice night club if you want to dance and have a brink, but don’t want to go far.

The air conditioner was far too cold in our room, and despite asking for it to be turned off for more than 4 days in a row, no one turned it off. The cleaning in the room was poorly done when we arrived. The presence of numerous cockroaches every evening in the room.

The manager of the place was horrible - he was hovering and micro-managing the other staff members which was very uncomfortable to watch. When he spoke, he was incredibly condescending. The other staff members were great and very accomodating except for this man who we assume was the manager… made our first experience at an Australian hostel horrible as he made us so angry from the moment we stepped in… Need to emphasis that the other staff members was great and they made up for his horrible customer service.

The rooms were freezing like being in a fridge, you can't control the air conditioning as it's done centrally. Not many plugs in rooms & in strange places, (under beds) making it difficult to charge devices. The kitchen's were nearly always dirty, with dirty dishes in sinks etc, which is not the fault of the hostel, just the people there. Not much storage space for luggage in dorms, especially when you have 8 people sharing. Can only pay by credit card for the room deposit key, which is unreasonable in such a large facility that they don't except cash.

The place is huge and it can be very loud (depends from the part of the hostel). There is a club downstair so I got impression that the place is also very party.

The hostel looks modern and it offers a lot of facilities (information center next to the reception), elevators and ect. My room was shared with another 7 women and I would say that it was okay. As I mentioned before, the place is modern, it has got small lockers and plugs next to every bed. The room includes also bathroom and toilet.
