The location is worse than I'd realized from other reviews: right on a really very busy road, with traffic coming constantly to and from the ferry. Once there we felt kind of locked in, not ok to walk out. There is a beach across the street but it didn't seem easy to cross. The pictures make the courtyard look bigger than it is. I wouldn't be surprised if this is about as good as you can get in Puntarenas, but next time I'd drive a bit further.

The room had a very strong smell of chemicals (of course we appreciated the cleanliness but maybe you might want to change the products you're using since the smell was way too strong)

It would have been nice to have a ceiling fan or a portable unit in the room.

The staff, especially Jose, were exceptional. The attached store was very convenient. Thè pool was a fantastic relief in the afternoon. Pablo is a great cook. The included breakfast was delicious and the dinners were reasonably priced and well prepared. The location is off the beaten path. The downtown is a short bus ride away. The beach is across the street.

Comfortable room; good air conditioning and very comfortable bed, especially compared to many hotels in Costa Rica. The area was secure and our room was ready the minute we arrived.

Not so much a dislike but, bare in mind the hotel is not located in central Puntarenas so prepare to walk or get a taxi/bus. Iif like us you're looking for somewhere quiet and away from the bustle however, this ticks all the boxes.

Small and secluded with a great beachfront location. All amenities you need are catered for (pool, shop & restaurant) and having stayed here a couple of times, the owners are extremely helpful and friendly,

The street was very noisy, but not as bad as expected.

I liked the beach right outside of the hotel, although it did rain a lot in our stay and we weren’t able to go outside much. The workers there were also very friendly, and helped us with a taxi ride the next morning.

The photos are slightly misleading.The footprint of the hotel is very small. The pool was tiny as opposed to the photos. Hotel is along a busy street and the beachfront is lovely but you have to cross a busy road to access it.

The obvious pride of ownership was impressive. The rooms were well anointed. Located in a quiet section of the beach.

As each room has sliding glass doors overlooking the parking/pool area, and facing towards the road, traffic noise can be a problem - there's also the more soothing noise of waves on the beach 24/7. I also found it incredibly hard to find and drove right past it twice and had to ask at a gas station for further directions - the sign on the road has faded so as to be unreadable, and there's an unlit sign on the wall at low level that is hard to read (see photo). It's just over 5km East of the ferry terminal, between Calle 60 and Calle 62, and not close to the centre of Puntarenas.

The Mar y Mar is a small two storey building below the main road running (Eastbound) beside the Pacific. It has clean small rooms that are well air-conditioned, but little wider than the bed! There's a pleasant small pool and a reasonable breakfast (eggs. rice & beans, fruit) is served in the "snackeria" that faces the main road. It also has a few private chairs and tables across the road at the top of the beach. There's nowhere else to eat at might within easy walking distance, but the evening menu is well-priced and offers plenty of choice - it's all cooked to order. The hotel is quite ecologically aware - most of its energy comes from rooftop PV panels (but this foes mean the shower only has a cold water supply).
