    Characterful, period hotel in AONB

Corridors were a little cold and draughty, but then it was January! Rooftop air conditioning units were noisy during the night. Spa facilities were not pre-bookable and were pretty fully booked by the time we arrived.

Lovely, characterful, period hotel in an Area of Outstanding Beauty near Offa's Dyke. Country house style with royal connections. Stunning gardens, including ruins of the 13th century castle. Great food.

... apart from the luke warm bath and shower, and not much breakfast choice, and our room wasn't near an exit (for dog).

Fabulous hotel in general, loved the building and the grounds, and that it was only a few minutes walk from town, had in house bar and restaurant, on the whole we really enjoyed our stay (with dog)...

The restaurant could have lived up to expectations more, as could the cleanliness of the room. In the SPA, we could have given more assistance to inexperienced people like us with indications on the best use of the areas.

The beautiful experience given by the suite room and everything that surrounds the historical atmosphere of staying in a spectacular location, plus indulging in relaxation in the SPA area hot tub, is a beautiful experience.

Our bed although large needed desperately to be replaced. We could appreciate the costs associated with the up keep of castle but a large sum of money needs to be injected into maintenance which is very obvious apart from what is needed behind the scenes.Painting inside needed desperately as other reviews stated as it makes everything look shabby. Reception painting needs change of colour It is ugly and uninviting.

We lovely the history of the Hotel and that even though it's had several owners the ambiance is quite extroudinary and the shere size of the castle and lovely grounds makes it lovely to stay in. Our room was very spacious. We also enjoyed the meals served in the restaurant. We were ver sceptical because of the negative reviews but did enjoy the quality. Majority of the staff very friendly.

Some of the communal areas were a little chilly. The decor in room very dark (dark greens, black ceiling in bathroom). Buffet Sunday breakfast wasn't as good as the individual order on Saturday.

The novelty of staying in a castle. The grounds and history. Ruthin itself. Comfortable bedroom. In the main very helpful and efficient staff.

Bed wasn’t very comfortable, it was like being perched on top of a dome. Corridors were very dark but I guess it adds to the atmosphere.

Difficult to find bins for dogs rubbish, not many bins around. Dogs had to come for breakfast which makes it difficult as need to sit out in another room, away from the food, it would help if tea and coffee were available in the other room as back and forth a lot, food also used up in buffet area but once staff knew they brought more food out but had to wait. Overall nice stay thanks

Beautiful place, staff very friendly took 2 small dogs which was nice to be able to take with us. Great access to take dogs out for toilet in several areas. Would be nice to have spa break but couldn’t use as can’t leave dogs in bedroom but will come back without them another time.

Spa experience was limited. Glad I booked mud treatment and hot tub as they're were only 2 steam rooms. Couldn't have evening meal due to "not much food left," which I thought was madness. Quite a random excuse for such a large establishment.

Lovely stay, staff friendly, very clean.

The hotel just felt a little tired and run down. The room was a great size, but had a peelibg ceiling, one lamp not working and some bulbs and shades missing in the chandelier. The mattresses definitely need replacing! It was a very hard bed and not at all comfortable for a side sleeper like me. The spa was nicely set out, but the changing rooms were tiny and mussing luttle touches like hooks for towels and clothes. Several lockers didn't work and hooks would have been useful around the hot tubs too.

Very atmospheric building in a nice Welsh village.
