Hay-on- Wye is Not Just About Bookshops! Try The Swan.

I would never mention a problem that I hadn't mentioned to the staff. By 00.45am my friend and I realised that we were not going to be able to sleep owing to noise from the kitchen fans. One call to reception and the lovely Nathan arranged for new rooms for both of us. How an establishment deals with problems is important and full marks are given here. Just a little point: given the loss of sleep and the inconvenience of a midnight move maybe a little reduction in the bill would have been a good PR exercise. Having said that I would be delighted to stay at The Swan again.

Dinner and breakfast were lovely and the staff were, without exception, helpful and friendly. There are numerous rooms for relaxation and it is great that the hotel is open throughout the day for meal service. The bedrooms are presented beautifully.

It's not "what I didn't like", but the hotel generally lacked atmosphere.

I was in room 20, a lock on the outer door would have felt more secure. Property needs a freshen up.

Well located near all the book shops I wanted to visit. Thank you for the pedestal fan, it was needed.

I was in the annexe and the little staircase was very narrow and awkward (inevitable in an historic building, but awkward nonetheless).

Food was excellent, room was good.

The smallest room and bathroom I have experienced outside of Japan. Lacklustre front of house area, not enough staff.

Maybe from a waste point of view, have a hand wash in the bathroom rather than give each new guest a fresh soap.

Not enough staff around, no one on reception when we arrived, took 10 mins and another guest to locate someone to book us in. Apologies were made. Bed was rock hard, room a bit tatty and not thoughly clean, dusty base boards, ceiling light and behind cupboards , hair in shower, tatty furniture

Friendly staff, location and free parking
