A bit of a maze to reach the room - 3 separate lots of stairs along various corridors and doors.

Very central and had free car park. Evening meal was very good.

Ensuite could do with upgrading , as could the front bar. Although these are only comments, they didn't spoil the stay.

Good choice of food. Staff were very attentive. Hotel was very clean, bed was comfortable .

The decor was in need of a little tlc. The tap in our bathroom couldn't be turned off properly and when we reported it to reception they were aware of the problem. How much would it cost to replace a tap?? Waste of water!!!

The room was very good, nice comfortable beds but the floors seemed quite uneven. It felt like we had had a few drinks but it is an old hotel so we accepted it. It was very interesting to hear about the ghosts that reside there. My wife was waiting for an old gentleman to come up the stairs but he never materialised. It turned out to be Arthur, a resident spook!!!. We would definitely stay here again.

I don't know where it says you have to book breakfast in advance but I didn't see it. When I came down I was told that I couldn't have breakfast because the till wasn't ready.

    Quiet and pleasant.

Room (No. 7) is right beside a main road and gets very hot. The pub itself and upstairs general communal areas are worn, need redecorating, carpet throughout badly needs replacing. The pub carpet is absolutely filthy and bar had an extension lead hanging from the ceiling. Whole place looked like it needed a complete clean! The lady serving behind the bar was abrupt, unfriendly. The 'regulars' drinking on Saturday afternoon were conversing very loudly, constantly swearing and had a negative racial tone (not generally heard in a public place) and made me feel slightly uneasy, seeing as I was the only ethnic patron in the pub at that time.

Outstanding food - lunch in the pub and breakfast was superb. I had the seafood linguine and it was fantastic with lots of prawns. Although the room decor was tired and badly needed redecorating, the room had clean bed linen and clean towels. Free parking is a bonus.

Decor very tired. Stained and very old carpet in the room. The toilet leaked all over the bathroom floor. Bathroom very small and nowhere to hang clothes. The room was very hot despite using the fan and having the window open.

Great location, friendly and helpful staff.

Rooms a bit dated and very basic. The hotel would not supply fresh milk from the kitchen for tea in our rooms said it wasn’t allowed. Also very poor selection of drinks at both bars. No Campari, no Martini and no port…….

The bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was great, with a lot of choice. The staff were very attentive and friendly. It was lovely to chat with them and even see old photos,as I trained at the Bear in 1978.

The constructive feedback I would provide for the Bear Hotel is the following.... I would suggest upgrading the TV in the room to a smart TV as most hotels have them these days. It's not something I was concerned about personally but some people may want to mirror their smartphones or tablets. Install a blind or put frosting on the window as its does face a block of flats (I was in Room 4) and the streets for those concerned about privacy when coming out of the shower or getting dressed. I managed to adjust the curtains a bit to avoid flashing the local residents! I was not too bothered personally as I have stayed at places where it was clothing optional if you get my drift.... I imagine some sensitive more uptight guests would not have as much of a sense of humour about it! Finally, a spare cup or mug with the tea/coffee facilities would have been helpful but thats minor and I'm sure if I'd asked for a spare at reception, it would of been provided by the staff who were all lovely.

I liked the room as although it was small, the facilities were plentiful and the hotel is well located with good travel links to Portsmouth, Chichester, Bosham and other areas via bus and train. Although it was a budget option (£49 per night), it really did the job for me and my requests were met which made things easier for me. The tea/coffee sachets were plentiful, the wardrobe was spacious, the high ceilings in the room made it feel spacious and the bathroom was great. I was able to have a bath and shower easily with plenty of shower gel/liquid hand soap provided. There are plenty of shops nearby (Waitrose, Tesco, Home Bargains etc.) if you forget any toiletries/cosmetics and wish to stock up. I forgot shampoo/conditioner so luckily Waitrose came to the rescue in providing me with John Frieda! The wedding I was attending was at a hotel (Langstone Quays Resort) which would have been over £200 a night so for a 15 minutes bus ride (30/31 bus ride via Hayling Island), The Bear Hotel was an amazing budget alternative with an old fashioned inn type ambiance.

Bit of work needed in the bathroom but everything else was as expected for such an historic building. Limited beer choice for non lager drinkers but decent local pubs near by so not an issue.

Lovely old building, large room and, pretty comfortable beds, and unlike a few places I've stayed, a quilt that was big enough on the single bed to stay on all night.

Room needed updating. Not enough sockets. TV crashed on 2nd day. Tried to eat in dining area got ignored at bar. Toilet noisy.

The room had a good view. It was warm enough. Plenty of hot water. Receptionist friendly. Quiet at night. Bar area good. Free parking.
