They couldn't find our room key so told us to wait in the bar area. No one came to find us when they had found an alternative key. I had to go chase it up myself. Nobody asked if we had a nice stay as we checked out. Didn't expect to pay for parking as we were quests at the hotel

No lifts, tight stairways, uneven floors. Our room was tired and dated. The bathroom was basic and not particularly clean. There was clumps of someone’s hair on the bathroom lino, it was never swept up during our three day stay.

The hotel is a beautiful example of a Victorian hotel. Located on the bus route into York (took about 10 mins) so well placed. Do be aware parking at the hotel is chargeable, we missed that somehow when booking. Staff were lovely, but not chatty. We were actually celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary but no one even chatted with us to know which we felt a bit odd for a family owned hoyel. However everything was clean and tidy. Had breakfast both days and it wasn't amazing but lots of choice of fruit, cereal etc. as well as cooked options. Room was dated and the sheets were of the cheaper variety but a couple of tears in the duvet cover on the edges but it was comfortable enough for 2 nights. Room was large, bathroom was massive and the shower was great too.

Generally a nice hotel, some of the carpets and paintwork is in need of a little TLC, but cannot fault the staff and facilities available. Cosy bar, and excellent breakfast choice.

The car park charge seems a bit odd. Most hotels allow guests to park their cars without charge, but here you pay an extra charge of £10 on the day. It kind of takes the shine off a little bit. The bathroom in our room was functional, but really could do with an update.

The hotel is quite old and lived in, which I quite like. It's got a lot of nooks and crannies and you need to like creaky floors. The breakfast was really good. Nice location, opposite the bus stop. The bar was very nice. The hotel grounds have a bit of charm. Even though you are close to the road, it feels secluded.

Small things: £10 per/night for parking. This number plate recognition for remote exit but failed to work. Piped maudlin Jazz music at dinner and breakfast. The quality of the bread at dinner and again as toast at breakfast which detracted from the standard of cooking

Perfect location for the University. Large, secure car park. Quick, efficient check-in by genial receptionist. Sensible dinner menu with steaks and 'classics' , well cooked and served. Wine list detailed wines by bottle or class at reasonable prices. warm comfortable attic room. Good shower.

The door of our room leading onto the shared balcony had warped so much it wouldn’t close properly!

Loved the whole aesthetic of the building, all the staff we encountered were superb.
