Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyIf I really really have to criticize something, then the lack of hangers and shelves to store things like toiletries bags. But that's just a recommendation, not a problem.
This hidden gem was by far the best place we've ever stayed in 6 months of traveling South East Asia. The location is in the middle of the jungle, you can see monkeys and orang utans from your room and you can go swimming in the river 100 m from the rooms. The staff is super nice and welcoming and the atmosphere amazing, playing guitar and sitting together every night at the restaurant.

AustraliaMaybe they could put a dorm room or a couple more private rooms, cause it only allows 4 rooms at a time, so it’s not the most social guest house. But besides that it was a really good value for money.
It’s next to the jungle so you have really good chances to see orangutans and monkeys in the property. Also the food and staff are amazing.

GermanyThe guest house is right in the jungle and has a beautiful atmosphere! We could see Urang Utans 50 meters behind our door. Don't worry about getting anywhere, they pick you up from the village and bring you back. The tour we booked through them was also really nice.

I would describe the property as a great halfway experience between jungle and luxury accommodation. I was greeted with monkeys on arrival so was very happy. If you don’t mind staying abit out the way of Bukit Lawang this is a great place to stay. I did a 3 day jungle trek all organised through Bayu. From travel to food and camping, with not being afraid to go above and beyond should you need anything for the trip. The tour guides who are also staff of the guest house were fantastic and answered all my questions. Special thanks to Jupur and Bagus for being such great guides. I even got extra tours such as exploring the near by cave and night spear fishing with the staff. Overall great experience would definitely recommend!

We booked this after reading the reviews and we were not disappointed. This felt like a cut above the other places to stay in providing a real experience of the area. It’s a beautiful and tranquil spot and a very well-run operation. It’s some way out of the village (which we appreciated) but the staff are excellent about transporting you in and out. This also means that there is a lot of wildlife around you (including possibly orangutans). The setting is stunning. Bayo, his brother Aji and all the staff really go out of their way to look after their guests and ensure that they have a great time. The service feels very personal. They are very knowledgeable about the local area and the wildlife and passionate about sharing their knowledge with their guests. And the food is fantastic, made largely with ingredients grown on site. They also organise jungle treks, using people who work for them or they know well. Ours was excellent, superbly led by Berry and Ndaka – they were brilliant at looking after us and ensuring that we had superb experiences of the wildlife and were safe. Again it seemed more personal and in a much smaller group than many of the tours that we heard about. This is also a real family and local venture. So stay here too if you want to feel that your tourist spend is going to support local people, the development of the community, the protection of the local environment and the sustainability of local tourism. The owners are excellent about employing young people from their community and supporting their training and development.

NetherlandsI had an amazing stay at Batu Kapal guest house. Baju and his friends go to an extend to make us feel welcome, help us with organizing jungle treks, and playing songs on the guitar. The place itself is on the edge of the jungle with high chance of spotting monkeys already. Would come again!

The food is amazing and all the team are so helpful and friendly! The location is unbelievable, right in the jungle with loads of birds, monkeys and sometimes orangutans coming to visit! They pick you up from town and drive you over to the house, which is a great introduction to jungle life! Cannot recommend this place enough. We had a fantastic stay, thank you to all the team!!

New ZealandSet in the jungle about a 15 minute motorbike ride from Bukit Lawang. They arranged pick up from our accomodation in Medan. Beautiful setting. We sat and ate breakfast with big groups of monkeys most days and other guests had orangutans pass through. Peaceful and quiet with a beautiful river one minutes walk away that you can swim in when it’s hot. The staff are lovely and go above and beyond. They were always available to take us into town whenever we wanted and offer great advice. Local Indonesian food is good with lots of options. Western options for breakfast like pancakes, fruit and omelettes. We went into the jungle for 2 days with a private tour with the guys too and it was incredible. Saw everything on our bucket list and more. They took things at our pace and gave us options for what we wanted to do. Campsite was clean. Food was amazing and they took such good care of us. Definitely add on the rafting to get home. Once in a lifetime trip

ItalyBe aware that the guest house is about a 15 minute motorbike ride from the main road and town, if you are not an extremely confident off-road motorcycle rider then you are pretty much confined to the guesthouse unless you pay for a tour or ride to the town. This could be positive or negative depending on you. Also bring your own soap and toiletries as they are not provided.
The guest house is away from the main town so you are next to a nice river and lots of jungle, we saw a Thomas leaf monkeys right from our room. The staff is exceptional and their food is good as well.

GermanyThe guesthouse impresses with a unique location in the middle of nature, situated on a creek. After an adventurous 15-minute motorbike ride, you arrive and are warmly welcomed by the boys working there. On site you can explore a cave, get to know the flora and fauna, book an orangutan trek or just relax. You don't get this amazing nature and stunning views if you stay in Bukit Lawang. The food and drinks were really great and the prices more than fair. You should definitly try the jungle food and the magic tea! We recommend to bring enough cash as there is no other way to pay. We would also recommend that you bring a small, thin sleeping bag and your own pillow if these are very important to you. An insect repellent can't hurt either, but can also be purchased there. Remember that you will be in the middle of the jungle so it's a bit basic and humid. Don't forget your rain jacket, flip flops and maybe a small flashlight or headlamp. Overall we had a really great time: we felt at home and were able to have great conversations at any time. If you have enough time you should stay 4 to 6 nights and do a 2 day jungle trek with water rafting.

SwitzerlandLocation: The Guesthouse is situated in the beautiful rainforest. You will love it if you like it quiet. It’s a bit off-grid, but that’s exactly ehat we wished for. 45min walk to the Bat Cave is absolutely worth it. Staff: The owner speaks perfect English and all staff speaks sufficient English. They are very kind and helpful. If you need anything, they will help. Food: The food and their fruit juices are delicious. You can eat anytime you want! Price: They probably have the fairest price in town. Other places rip you off. Tipp: Bring enough cash, otherwise there’s an ATM about 20mins drive away. Also, we didn’t volunteer but we‘ve heard from other guests that it is a great experience to volunteer at the local school (you can even do just one day)! Don’t forget to give tips to the staff!

GermanyWe loved everything!!!
We absolutely loved this place. So quiet and calm in the middle of the jungle. When you come to Sumatra, you have to book a room with Bayu and his brothers. They are so welcoming and warm. They will treat you like family the whole time you are there. We stayed for 5 nights and were really sad to leave. If you have time, plan more nights with them! The place is in the middle of the jungle, so if you love nature, you will never want to leave. The food was always fresh and amazing. The vegetables and fruits came directly from the jungle. We absolutely loved the whole vibe and how the guys played guitar in the evening and were singing along. They also organised a jungle trek for us. The guide Henra was very professional and kind as well. Felt like a good friend :) In summary: best people, best food, best accommodation, best travel experience we ever had!!

NetherlandsIt is a bit of a motorride to get to the guesthouse from the centre of Bukit Lawang, something we didn’t know. It was 20 minutes on the back of the motor, through a rough road. The guest house picked us up and dropped us off, so that was no problem at all. But a good thing to know! We also found the jungle trekking to be expensive (€105). Later we found out that the other jungle trekkings in the area were a lot cheaper, so we were a bit disappointed by that. We also found it strange that the jungle trek guide was smoking in the jungle. We know it is more common here to smoke sigarettes, but it felt a bit inappropriate to smoke so close to the orang-oetans.
We were suprised at how beautiful this location is. You are surrounded by jungle and the guest house itself is also beautiful. We stayed for one night, but would def stay 2-3 nights if you have the time. Peaceful surroundings, great food and lovely staff. The room was spacious and nice. No AC, but there was a fan. A lot of activities to do, such as volleyball, fishing, jungle hikes, swimming in the river… Could have stayed much longer.
