Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesTour guides meeting point was nearby and we could hear everyone talking from our room so we did not manage to get a good sleep. Still better than not sleeping the whole night as we were coming from Bali.
Great location to hike Mt Ijen, just minutes from the trailhead. The property arranged a car to pick us up from the Ketapang port and take us back the next day after the hike with only 2 days notice - that was great. They also arranged a guide and everything went well. There were some ok food options around at almost any hour.

United KingdomInformation about the hike could have been better. We were told we would get back around 8-9am. We explained we wanted to be away early and asked if it would be possible to finish earlier. They assured us this was not possible. On the hike the guide said he suggested leaving the top at 6am (half an hour after sunrise), to get back at 7am. We actually got back more like 6.40am, but certainly not 8-9am. It is also noisy in the morning as jeeps arrive and a pile of people come from all around to start their trek, so if you are not getting up at 2am you will still wake at that time!
Great location opposite entrance to Ijen crater hike, and helpful in sorting out a guide for the hike. Basically a the place is fine without being luxury, and staff helpful.

AustraliaFreezing cold, rooms are not sealed. No hot water in our room. We slept on a mattress. Nothing to do around (only ijen and hot springs). Drivers started singing karaoke at 5am (terrible voices, no wonder that are drivers, no singers).
The staff was nice. Only one person spoke good English. The place is really close to the ijen entrance (100m). Food prices around are really cheap (we paid 15k for a burger).

VietnamPerhaps upgrade to a better hot water heater. Waiting for hot water while being naked in the shower is bone chilling.
The location is only 2 mins walk to Ijen ticket counter. Mattress was on the floor but comfy. Quite a basic guest house with hot shower (though the water pressure is super low, can't blame them, it's up the mountain). They also have gas masks, hiking poles, and warm jackets for rent. It takes 1 hour to go from Banyuwangi to here by motorbike. Once you pass Osing village, expect a beautiful drive in the forest. But drive carefully as it's foggy (couldn't see more than 10m ahead), cold and slippery because of the high altitude.

SwitzerlandThe guesthouse is a bit spartan but it`s fine as long as you stay there the night of your trekking, since you will wake up at 1.30 am!
Justice was an incredible guide. Very helpful. He helps you with the organisation of the tour even though you didn't ask for it. He also helped us with the transfer to Mount Bromo. The facility is perfectly located at the start of the trekking.

United KingdomThe facilities are really poor, I was lucky to not have to stay in the shared bathroom room for one night as the bathroom isn't just shared with guests but it's public. It's used by anyone that stops by the homestay, for a coffee or food break, which is a lot of people as the place is right by the main parking lot and one of the first ones. Other than the toilet itself being outside, the sink is in the middle of the reception/restaurant area and the shower is near the kitchen, you'll need to walk past the same reception area to use it. As a foreign women travelling alone I didn't feel comfortable or safe, walking in/out of the shower with eyes staring at you is far from ideal. The room is above the reception, so you're constantly being screened by strangers when leave or go back. Also, brushing your teeth where strangers have been washing their hands, while being watched isn't an experience I'd recommend. The room is very basic, true as the photo in a way, though if you're above 5'5'' you'll likely not fit standing up. It's right above the reception/restaurant and not soundproof at all. At night you have guests arriving late, chatting away and watching things on loudspeaker. In the morning (from 1 am) you have many strangers stopping by for coffee and breakfast before the hike. Also you're right above the kitchen so expect to smell everything they cook at all times.
Only good thing is that you're super close to the entrance gate to Ijen, so you won't have to join the queue of cars driving up at night and if you're staying after the hike you can enjoy relax without rushing away. Though there's nothing in the area, once all the hikers are gone it becomes a ghost town.

BelgiumAfter long journey, we arrived and the staff were busy with their phones, I said in a polite way “hello ..” She was just “here’s your room” Me: yes, where is that? The room is so dark, dump, moist, smelly and HUGE SPIDER. It’s so noise, could hear your neighbours, no wifi, and every time we turned on the water and the pump went loud and making noise, and leaking all over the walls. Im so seldom to give a bad review but this one was so bad and pricey. I would recommend this place if you really want to scream in the middle of the night without someone stopping you. Ah yeah the last, seems like they’re monetising everything for their clients especially foreigners.
Nothing, absolutely nothing.

ChinaOne thing that could be improved is their responsiveness to questions asked on booking com. I tried to ask if they can rent hiking poles and mask hut didn't heat back from them. Eventually I bought low quality overpriced poles for 200K, just to find out Avrilla do have better poles for rent for 20K. I needed renting theirs instead of using mine.
Staff super friendly Location is right where groups gather to start the hike. This gives you extra 1 or 2h of sleep before the hike, compared to staying down in the town. You can wake up 1:45, and start hike 2am. They have hiking poles for rent Super easy to arrange guide (they have few in-house guides with good English level). I stayed there on the night when forest adjacent to village have burned down. Was quite scary to see fires from the window and I ended sleeping only 1h. What I really liked is that our hotel didn't burn down. Although the benefits of sleeping in I was hoping for didn't really work out. Something to be aware of: The room I stayed was very simple, basically a small attic space with mattress and bed side stand: Japanese style I would say. Noise of groups gathering down stairs starting from around 1:30am. But this would only be issue if you are not taking the hike.
