Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeFantastic location just a short walk past the village, beautifully quiet and we had direct access to the river for swimming. Saw 10 orangutans on our trek and many other monkeys daily. Risky was amazing with his cooking (you can tell he enjoys it). Arif helped us with all things trekking (Wanda and the team were expert trekkers and very informative) and also organised our transfers. Jooly (sp?) was really helpful on the trek, assisting me with steep areas and making me feel very safe at all times. The ladies were very kind. We will definitely try and get back here. A very memorable experience.

NetherlandsLeaving and ofcourse its hot without airconditioning but the experience was totally worth it.
This place is such a gem! A unique guesthouse to stay in if you are in Bukit Lawang. The location is along side the river in the middle of the jungle, 10 minute walk from the village. The view and sounds of the river and jungle just outside your bedroom window are phenomenal! The best part is the people who work here. Communication through the booking site was excellent, they arranged the transport for me from Medan to Bukit Lawang. Julie came to pick me up in the village of bukit lawang and carried my backpack to the guesthouse. Arif is chef de activity and transport. He arranged an amazing jungle trekking for me and another guest staying at kupu kupu. I think we had the best jungle guide we could wish for, his name was Wenda and he has been a jungle guide since 1992. Loads of experience and knowledge, he was involved in lots of international research projects. His english is excellent, make sure you ask for him if you want to do the jungle trekking. We saw 9 Orangutans in one day. Risky is in charge of lots of things like the shopping and is also an excellent cook! He is such a sweet guy, always happy and loves to talk and explain about Indonesian culture, he made me feel at home. Risky took me to the friday market and told me so many things about the local products. The fruits, vegetables, fish, Indonesian snacks/sweets and chewing tobacco. We also build a dam/swimmingpool in the river which was a lot of fun! If you are travelling alone this place is great for meeting people because of the communal dinner everyday, enjoying a meal together with the other guests at the dining area while exchanging stories and experiences. The food they cook at Kupu Kupu is just amazing, I loved the gado gado and I think it was called sambal goreng telor. They also make a really good chai tea. The owner Sue and the ladies who cook are really nice. Cant recommend this place enough!

AustraliaThe staff was extremely friendly and very helpful. We've stayed "only" 1 week, but felt straight at home and made good friends with the staff. We also did the 2-day jungletrekking with Wanda, who has more than 30 years experience in the jungle and knows everything. The food was delicious and the garden and the views from the top room were amazing. If you love nature, for us this is the best place to stay in Bukit Lawang. Special thanks to Risky, Arif, Kiki, Meri.

United StatesWe enjoyed not being in town and having that 15 minute walk but maybe others might not like to be this isolated.
Kupu Kupu Garden is nestled amidst the jungle, directly beside the river. It's approximately a 15-minute walk to town (30 minutes from the car drop-off point). Our room featured a balcony and a hammock, providing a delightful spot for relaxation for all of us.

IndonesiaNothing.
We love everything about this place. It's our second visit and I would come back anytime. The location is spectacular and the views from the room are amazing. Such a haven of peace and quiet. You can cool down in the river just in front of the property. The jungle trek is highly recommended. Such a beautiful rainforest and seeing orangutans up close in their natural habitat is certainly very memorable. The staff is also great and helpful. Rizky always smiles, Julie always happy to help, Arif always ready to show you the treasures of the jungle. If I remembered all the names, I would list them here too. The room is comfortable and as described. This place really is a gem!

TurkeyThere should be an electric kettle in the room, provided that it’s a remote location. The WiFi works only in the common area which could be improved.
The location is the best in Bukit Lawang. The staff is really really nice and friendly. The food is amazing. They made my stay feel like home. Riski is a great host. Arif is a terrific jungle guide.

AustraliaLeaving this magical place!
Staying at Kupu Kupu was an experience we will treasure forever! There is NO better place to experience the magic of Bukit Lawang, the location of this guest house being absolutely perfect - it took us 10 minutes to walk the narrow path between the guest house and the rest of the village and being around the bend from the village in a quiet and natural area meant that we were be situated directly in the wilderness, watching the jungle and the stunning cooling river from our large undisturbed window view, and from the lovely cafe area. We could see moneys playing in the tress and the hornbill coming in to sit in the tree opposite the guest house every evening. The staff at Kupu Kupu are amazing - Arif is a fantastic person, passionate about conservation, and was the perfect jungle guide on our overnight trek, tailoring our walk to our skills and interests, and Juli also assisted us so well with his deep knowledge of the jungle. Risky is an incredible natural cook, and the food he cooked for our evening communal eating, was so delicious that we never wanted to eat anywhere else. For me it has been the best food I've had on our holiday around Indonesia. Mary also cooks the best banana pancakes and omelettes, and is a great cook and an incredibly sweet person. Thank you to this fabulous team, we could really make the most of our time in this unique and magical place, as the location, the staff, our room with a magical view and the food left nothing to be desired. We feel incredibly lucky to have found this jewel in the jungle and hope to return again with our friends. Thank you SO much dear staff at Kupu Kupu!!!

GermanyThe driver, which the guesthouse arranged, scammed us - he told us that the ATMs at the AirPort have a fee of 5% and more. He drove us to a supermarket (maybe his friend) where we made a payment by card (and got cash) and payed 4% on top. Don’t trust him. We payed the 4% because we didn’t wont any stress because we needed his service. ATMs in Indonesia do not have a fee! Also Arif told us for example Batcave costs 150.000 IDR Entry Fee. As I was there by myself I payed only 100.000. This destroyed a small bit the experience to be with friends, not at a hotel. But maybe thats normal in Asia.
Risky and Arif and the other woman are very very friendly. The food is fantastic. The location is direct in the jungle - it is absolutely amazing.

ChinaI visited during low season - which I'm sure positively impacted my impression of Bukit Lawang and the jungle treks. If I came during the high season, the increase in the touring masses would have dampened the experience. Though on this trip, the only dampening I experienced was from the rain - and that's all part of the fun! :)
Nothing not to like - 15 to 20 minute trail hike outside of the town, making it the most remote guesthouse. Stayed three-nights in the family orangutan suite (hot water) with outdoor shower/toilet that allowed me to look for monkeys while showering - yippee! Hammock out front for reading and just soaking it all in. One night in the Gecko, a smaller room, but also nice (cold water). Risky, Arif, Julie, and Mary were all incredible and really look after their guests - they also offer tours. They treat you as a friend and it is sincere. Family-style dinners. Clean. Comfortable. Lovely breakfasts for a great price. Whitewater rafting an option - a wonderfully thrilling option when going solo - though a touch of fun danger. Taking a right just outside offers a few kilometer hike along the river that taps your inner-Indiana Jones. Saw Thomas Leaf monkeys five minutes from the guesthouse. Macaques everywhere - some on my balcony. Hornbill watched over breakfast. Gibbons heard over the same meal. Orangutan mom and child just down the river on the other side - saw after finishing a two-day trek. A viper and its recently finished meal right around the way.

ItalyI love everything, although always little room for improvement, perhaps a kettle in the room
From a world traveler point of view, I can honestly say this places are beyond rare. Imbedded in the jungle, but only a few minutes walk from the mainstream of guesthouses and b&b this place offers the best of both worlds. A path along the river introduces you to the jungle atmosphere, to then arrive at what looks an amazing lodge. The construction is very tastefully built, the size of the rooms are extremely generous, and the views from the bed and from the balcony are breathtaking. The price is definitely not aligned with the rarity and beauty of this place, is far too cheap, but hey we like that! We managed to organise the tours through them and wow wow, the guide was awesome, we got very close to the orangutan 🦧💯🙏 We did the water rafting and we managed to squeeze in a visit to the close by Batcave. Breakfast was amazing and to be honest, dinner was out of this world. This is the kind of place where you disconnect (WiFi is good) from the world, you meditate, you make decisions, you bond and most of all you experience the true beauty of nature! I would love to go back and spend more time! Well done!

GermanyHad an amazing stay in Kupu Kupu Garden! The location is breathtaking, you are right in the Jungle. It's a short, beautiful 10 minute walk from the village thorugh the jungle along the river where you see waterfalls and wildlife. The view from the balcony is priceless. The best experience was to enjoy a hot shower in the outside bath during a heavy rainfall and enjoy the view of the jungle. The team was super nice and they prepared the best food we had in all of Indonesia! They also offer jungle trekking and can help you with everything you need.
