Two bungalows with view of the lake (in the hammock) half way up (yes, many steps) between the lake and the restaurant at the main road. Owner has good knowledge of the island and you can rent a scooter to explore. Owner is waiting when you arrive by ferry, and will accompany you when you leave.

We felt in love with lake Toba and we were lucky to enjoy it even more at this place. If you are looking for a private, calm, chill place - yes this is it! The apartment is perfectly located in a green, hidden area in front of the lake. Every morning and evening we enjoyed beautiful views and were swimming in the lake just few steps from the apartment. Being for two months in Indonesia it was a first place with such a big space and different shells, tables, clothes hangers, tables etc The hot shower was very good. The kitchen is well equipped, there is a fridge and you can easily cook your own meals. The vegetarian/vegan restaurant that Ali has was very good too. We enjoyed delicious guacamole with sourdough bread and avocado juice. There is a big avocado tree in the garden according to one local woman Ali’s avocados are best on the island :) Ali is friendly and very helpful. We extended our stay twice :) Would love to come back !

The couch which functions as a bed is not super comfortable. Though the owner helped with improving the couchbed a bit with a topping layer. Which made it a tiny bit less bad. (For context: I am a very tall Dutch guy. For a child it’s completely fine)

The rooms were simple but spacious and clean and with the hammock looking out over the lake the place is very nice. You can take a swim 5 meters from your door. The owners were amazing. Helping us with activities. Even driving us to different workshops. The restaurant is also very good! We had great halloumi wraps and breakfast.

I didn’t like not being able to stay there.

It’s difficult to know where to begin reviewing this incredible accommodation. The communication from booking to departure was prompt and helpful The arrival smooth, as the apartments have their own jetty where you can be dropped very easily. Ali was waiting for me and carried my bag up the few steps to my spacious bungalow, with beautiful lake views from its terrace, bedroom and living room. There is a small kitchen with a fridge, sink and 2 gas rings. The bathroom includes a shower with ample hot water. Up the steep stone steps (with a handrail and motion-sensor lighting) you reach the road, where you can find many restaurants and a small but decent supermarket about 10 minutes’ walk away. Not that you’ll want to be making your own meals because the apartments’ own vegetarian/ vegan restaurant offers a great selection of dishes - all freshly made and delicious. The room itself is comfortable, with a large double bed above which are sockets and light switch and a mosquito net (although I didn’t see any during my 2-night stay). The wi-fi was excellent. It’s possible to swim in the lake from here, although I didn’t try, fearing that my limited mobility would prevent me from getting out again! Which brings me to the hosts - Katie and Ali; I have travelled a lot and have generally had positive experiences of accommodation, but I cannot recall anyone being as kind, helpful, generous and understanding as this couple. I had a knee injury, which wasn’t their problem but they went out of their way to ensure I was OK, even arranging alternative accommodation for me, so that I didn’t need to manage the steps. I was so sad to leave. This is simply an amazing place. Ali & Katie, thank you so much for your kindness and consideration.

Ali is a great host. My friend and I both got food poisoning on the way to Lake Toba and he took great care of us, making sure we had everything we needed. The view of the lake is wonderful, even from the bed if you're lying there sick all day ;) . When we were able to eat, we had delicious food at the veggie/vegan restaurant above the apartment! Ali can also help organise day trips for you.

Where to start! Fabulous quite location next to the lake, very reasonable priced apartment with living space and kitchen, great vegetarian restaurant on sight, Katie and Ali were so very helpful with knowledge, contacts, and information they also had a scooter I rented. This place for me was idyllic I loved it I will definitely be back such a laid back chilled backpacker vibe if that's what your into i can't recommend highly enough!

Hally was very helpful and provided excellent advice in organizing our transportation between our accommodation and Silangit airport, where we took an internal flight to Yogyakarta. Hally was attentive to our needs and is a very caring person. The terraces of the rooms overlook the lake and it's truly a spectacle. We witnessed breathtaking sunsets, not to mention the stunning landscape as well."

If you have mobility issues, the steps from the restaurant on the road to the apartments on the hillside might be a problem.

The apartment is really large with a full kitchen and fridge. The fan is all you need and we did not have any issues with mosquitos. It is so quiet at night since it is quite far down the side of the hill from the road. The hammock right in front of the lake is so peaceful. The food from the restaurant is delicious!!! Absolutely great place to come home to after a big day of exploring.

There were some ants in the washroom but they were dead and easily washed down the drain - no problem.

Very very nice people, helped us with everything and organized a lot for us. Always there for a nice little chat also. The apartment is located directly with lake view. Coconut and mango trees right in front of the terrace. We got free avocados from their own tree, herbs, free water... Very much space and even a kitchen. They have a restaurant, too. The food is amazing, try the vegan options :P Would highly recommend to stay there. Thank you very much Katie, Ali and Mario! P.S.: be careful with the steps, espacially when it's raining ;)

I enjoyed my stay at Mario's Apartments. The room had a beautiful view over Lake Toba. Being able to admire this in peace from a hammock gave the whole even more grandeur. The restaurant is another great asset of this place. Particularly good food here. Don't forget to try one of their fantastic fruit juices. A delight for the palate. The internet connection is also of excellent quality throughout the domain. From my arrival to my departure, Kathy, Ali and their two sons made me feel welcome. They were also very helpful without being intrusive. This place had everything to make my stay in Tuk-Tuk a success.

We were visiting during Idul Fitri, so Tuk Tuk was very busy, and lots of loud boats in the bay! The place was still enjoyable, but maybe avoid peak holidays if you like things quiet!

The family running the place are incredibly lovely and also so helpful! They were full of suggestions and helped us heaps with trip logistics! Our stay was super comfortable in a spacious room with bathroom, lounge and kitchen. Great comfy bed too! They also have an on-site vegetarian restaurant that is DELICIOUS and cheap! I can not recommend Mario Lakeside Apt enough! Especially for those looking for a comfortable and self-sufficient place for longer stays!

My aunt of 75 could not walk the stairs 30m down to the apartment without side rail. She was every afraid had to hold her hand. The steps were too high so high risk she would fall. The apartment was too far away from our car and impossible to bring our luggage down. It did not look representative and tidy at entry. We were waiting half an hour at parking spot after phone call nobody came to us. We decided to cancel and got our money back. Instead we went to Tabo cottages 200m further down which was a great and comfortable experience after all.

We were looking for an acceptable price and available apartment for 3 persons, different beds. We decided immediately to cancel and got our money back from the owner, commission of booking.com was taken off.
