Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNothing really. It's a bit far out so you might be better off with a scooter. Failing that, the staff are able to organise transport.
Friendly staff, yummy food, comfortable beds and a beautiful setting. The staff helped to organise transport to and from the airport and they also did my laundry really quickly so I could take stuff on the jungle trek. Thank you!

We had THE most amazing time at the Sumatra Orangutan Discovery Villa! It had everything we needed and more; the team were so friendly and accommodating, and really went above and beyond for their guests. They were all so chatty, easy to talk to and really helpful. The villas are in a lovely little exotic garden and there’s a patio and restaurant area to sit in. The villas themselves are lovely, comfy beds with the mosquito nets and a fan to keep cool, and a refreshing shower. There’s also a little front garden patio to chill. The meals in the restaurant cooked by the lovely ladies are just phenomenal. They offered lots of different activities; we did the jungle trek which was just amazing, our guide Mester was so knowledgeable about the jungle and we felt safe the whole time. Bukit Lawang is about a 20 minute walk away and the nearest convenience store is a 15 minute walk away, but they offer a tab for your room and to pay at the need so bring cash or download wise app beforehand; there is really wifi too!

United StatesThe accommodation at the villa was comfortable and relaxing. It felt like a home away from home, thanks to the warm hospitality of Tyson and the team. Every meal was delicious, the best food I've had in all of Indonesia. Quiet location away from the main village. My trek with Sumatra Orangutan Discovery exceeded all expectations! Joko and Hafidz, my guides, were absolute gems. Their passion for the jungle and its special inhabitants shined through. They not only led us through a breathtaking hike but also shared knowledge about the wildlife along the way. Their attention to detail truly made the experience seamless and enjoyable.

The best part of the property is the staff. Owner, Tyson welcomed me explained everything needed. A young lady working at the cafe (Diza, sorry if I mistaken the name)made me one of the best meals in Indonesia I’ve ever tried. Sweet dog and cat were also welcoming and slept under my room’s door at night. The room was simple but very clean with beautiful garden setting. The location is a little bit out of town, but walkable and very quiet. Tyson also organized a jungle trek for me and that was also very good. We saw 8 orangutans)

United KingdomI was entirely happy with my stay. All my expectations were met.
The location is perfect, just outside the village and on the edge of the jungle. The staff are fantastic, always available and willing to help with anything at all. My room was really comfortable and the meals I had were all delicious. I did a two trek into the jungle with guides Nurdin and Chan. They looked after me really well and the experience was very special. By the end of my short visit, I felt like a friend rather than a guest. I would love to go back to Sumatra Orangutan Discovery Villa in the future and have no hesitation in recommending it.

SpainNothing, we loved everything!!!
We like to travel a lot and for sure this is one of the best places we have ever visited. Situated next to the river with the most beautiful views. All the persons working here made our stay very special, making music at night and playing cardgames with the kids. The food also was delicious. We did three different excursions (village tour, jungle trek for 2 days and bat cave) and everything was very well organized. Also from the moment you make the reservation, there is a very good contact with the host for all your questions. We definitely want to return one day.

NetherlandsLocation is not superb, but you can work around that. Upon arrival I was mostly suprised that my primary contact was actually based abroad. They would set me up with a 5day tour from a partner company but unfortunately that failed last minute (not their fault) so I had to fix something else myself. Besides that a great stay.
They helped with ride from Medan airport, room was great, food was nice and well priced, staff is great and friendly. Cute dog. Decent value for money. If it fits your schedule: book a tour with them, their guides are nice guys.

GermanyThere is no hot water, but due to the hot weather it was no problem. There are also mosquitoes (a net is provided) and some ants but the villa is in the jungle after all, so you can't avoid that.
Our stay was great. The hosts organized a driver for us to pick us up from the airport in Medan. As it was our first accomodation in Indonesia on our vacation, we needed a sim card and they made sure the driver will stop at a sim card shop for us. We also did a jungle tour organized by them and we got to see lots of Orang-Utan and other animals. Unfortunately we could not raft the way back to our accomodation on the river since it rained beforehand and the guides decided it was not safe enough. We spent the last night singing songs together outside the accomodation while the host was playing the guitar which was pretty cool. Another bonus is the view on the jungle while lying in a hammock, right outside the room. We would definetly recommend staying here if you want to visit Bukit Lawang.

The people who are extremely friendly and entertaining. For tracking and adventuring I think this would be a good group of people to go with, though we were unable to do any tracking on this trip. The service was very nice. the accommodations are new.

SpainEverything was great!
We spent 2 days at Orangutan Discovery villa and everything was great. The rooms with view on stunning nature were comfortable and clean. The breakfast and dinner were excellent. But most of all, the personnel was so helpful and welcoming that we would have liked to stay more. We had a great time with Tyson, Dani and the people working or visiting the villa, chatting about Indonesian culture and playing guitar. We also did the jungle trek with them and it was a unique experience. Dani was a perfect guide to spot all the variety of animals ( among which Orangutans!) and, most importantly, he has a contagious smile :-) If you are looking for some wild nature and good vibes in Sumatra, do not hesitate to go there!

BelgiumEllie helped us to organise a trip in Sumatra from getting picked up at the airport to being dropped off, including activities such as jungle tour, elephant washing, lake toba, etc. Not only was she very professional during the organisation but she was also available all along in case something happened! Upon arrival at the discovery villa, we were greeted by Tyson and a delicious watermelon juice, while he walked us through the planning of the next couple days. Every guide we had was very knowledgeable ( Dany walked us through the jungle, he stopped often to show us some plants and of course the various monkeys/ orangutans) and always seemed very happy! The food was very diverse and delicious, especially the juices😋 The whole trip felt like pure holidays, we did something everyday but never felt rushed or stressed as the guides were usually flexible! Everything was absolutely amazing, we would definitely recommend staying there and take contact if there is any special requests, they are always happy to help their hosts!! We will hopefully be back one day!

We had a fantastic time with Sumatra Orangutan Discovery. The accommodation was lovely, comfortable room and nice garden to look out on. The food was excellent and lots of options for vegetarians. Our tour was fantastic (Nurdin, our guide, and Dedek), helped us to see about 6 orangutans and guided us safely through the jungle despite the heavy rain. The whole team were really welcoming and we felt like we had joined the family.

SingaporeLike I mentioned the accomodation is quite lo-fi, but for the price it's really hard to beat, and we were out trekking most of the time anyway. The meals do take a while to be served because it's likely being done by a small team. We opted for a full-day jungle trekking (excellently guided by Yazid), village tour (our guide was young and eager, but wasn't the most equipped with sharing about the beautiful village), and had two massages (first one was good, second one had another masseuse that was not great).
This accomodation is nestled along the quieter off-road of Bukit Lawang, and is beautiful and tranquil. The owners, Ellie and Tyson are quick to respond to enquiries and are always there to assist where needed. All our tours were arranged by them, as were our massages and our meals. Everything here is quite lo-fi - there are no heaters or hairdryers in the shower, no air-con in the room (an electric fan and nets to keep insects away are provided), and at the end of the stay Tyson runs through the bill with you personally (the rates are set by the Guiding Association so you can be assured). Everyone in Bukit Lawang is warm, gentle, and eager to show you their town and the forest that is home to semi-wild Orang Utans, no one is touting / trying to make a quick buck off you, and that has been so refreshing. If you prefer to have your meals elsewhere / would like to get to the nearest convenience store, it's a lovely 20-minute walk away.
