Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNo hot water (but I understand this is the case for pretty much everywhere in bukit lawang) and quite noisy when the bar across the river had a karaoke night but I put my earplugs in and it was fine
The staff at Thomas retreat were really friendly and lovely, we felt really welcome and at home staying here. The beds were comfy and the location was excellent, right on the river in close proximity to the village. We went on a jungle trek with them and had an amazing day and thought it was really good value.

CanadaTo get to the hotel, you get dropped off at a store, and from there you need to walk about 10-15 mins down the main “street”, across a rickety suspension bridge and along the river before getting to the hotel. It’s usually raining there so this is not fun esp if you have luggage (you’ll need to carry it) if your driver/guide doesn’t help you. We arrived late at night in the pouring rain and this really sucked. But almost all the hotels are like this so not unique to Thomas
This place is clearly popular, lots of rooms for all budgets and one of the few places with AC. like all the hotels you can book your orangutan tour, airport rides, rental bikes etc here. They’ve got a restaurant with good food and WiFi was decent for the area (I wouldn’t try to working from here on video calls). Thomas was always around making sure you’re ok. We didn’t book our tours with him since we didn’t know all hotels offered this service but Bukit Lawang is an awesome little town, super unique in that it was connected by all these suspension bridges. We stayed in 2 different rooms and they were both spacious with large beds. We did the 1 day hike and it started right by the hotel which was great! Jungle taxi also ended within walking distance of hotel. Tip: if you turn left out of the hotel walk upriver, there’s a shallow spot you can wade into where the current isn’t strong.

United KingdomOnly minor faults were the mosquito net had a few small holes in and the shower attachment in the second room we had was broken. Otherwise faultless!
We stayed for 2 nights before the jungle tour (also booked through Thomas’ Retreat) and 1 night after. From the beginning, Thomas and the rest of the staff were very welcoming and helpful. We got the basic room which was more than enough, the fan worked really well so no air con needed. We knew we were signing up for cold showers so no issues there. Food was amazing and well priced, very close to the centre of Bukit luwang touristy area and right on the river for lovely views.

FranceEveryone in the staff was super friendly and helpful. Thomas answered every questions we had before arriving with great details, and helped us arrange transport to and from Bukit Lawang. The room we booked was perfectly comfortable and clean, and the food was delicious. The location is really beautiful. Thomas also recommended us the 2 day jungle trek, which we absolutely loved. Our guide Lilik was really friendly, super knowledgeable and funny. We had a delicious dinner in the jungle thanks to Dani as well. The whole experience felt really special and we left Bukit Lawang feeling like our stay should have been longer. If you visit Sumatra you should definitely stay here !

GermanyLow water pressure and sometimes no water, but it was always fixed immediately (and it's probably everywhere the same in Bukit Lawang).
Great staff. Had a lot of fun with the guys. Quiet area on the side of the river, where motorbikes are not allowed fortunately. The jungle is directly in the back, so there are always monkeys around to watch. One day a semi-wild orang utan and her child came for a visit (should not need to be mentioned, but they are not allowed to be fed and touched!). The room and bathroom were very clean. Comfortable bed. Mosquitonet over bed and windows (but there were no mosqitos anyway). Good wifi. The food was delicious with a lot of choices for reasonable prices. Nice seating areas next to the river. Did a fantastic 1 day jungle trek with the Jungle Man Tondi, the boss/guitar player of the Jungle Man Band (which is playing each Saturday at the restaurant). Absolutely recommended.

GermanyWe stayed 2 night + the 2 day jungle trekking tour. The place looks like a paradise. The food was very good with big offer. We also ate meat and had no problems. The employees were so nice and everyone was polite and helpful. We would recommend the tour with Ren and Mitiyus. They are very funny and know the jungle. Ren showed us cool card tricks and gifted us a selfmade necklace. We had an amazing experience. Also - when you stay at Thomas’ Retreat, you support the locals and not the Europeans who stole the idea of jungle trekking in Bukit lawang. Thank you!!❤️🤗

FranceWe highly recommend this place if you are looking for a good quality room, excellent food, 5* service and a great jungle trekk adventure. Special mention to Thomas, the owner, a truely interesting and sincere person who does everything in his possible to make his customers feel at ease and that they enjoy every bit of their stay. ( We stayed 8 days instead of 5 originally ) Really worth having a couple of chats with him and we will definitely miss them for a while. We personally had a amazing experience for the jungle trekk 3D2N with our guides Chandra and Mister Arnold, with who we shared a lot about Indonesian culture and our cultures. They were very experienced guides and did all their possible to make us feel safe in the jungle and joyful at every moment during the 3 days ( the food was also divine in the jungle ). Whilst a lot of the trekking companies/tours are ran by foreigners, these guys are local, genuine and really support the local community , so we found on our side that it was important to choose them for our entire stay in Bukit Lawang. Overall, this place is a little paradise bubble in Sumatra that we will remember for always and definitely miss but we will 100% come back some day. Manon & Flavien

SpainWe had the most incredible experience with Thomas and his team! Thomas welcomed us at his resort and explained everything about the trekking. We decided to go on a 2N3D adventure and never regretted it! Our guides Rain and Tondi were great. They had lot of knowledge about the jungle and were always ready to answer ours questions. At midday, they would prepare abundant tropical fruits for us to enjoy and, in the night time, they would organise games to keep us entertained. The food at the camp was delicious and also abundant - we feel like we ate a lot during these days! Back in the village, the accommodation at Thomas' is clean, comfortable and well equipped. We definitely recommend staying there and doing your trekking with Thomas Retreat!
