Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

JapanThe hotel accepts guest with dogs. The dog in the room next to us was barking past 11 pm. Also, the guests in that room were smoking in their room (no smoking room), which was very unpleasant.
The private baths were nice, although they do need some maintenance. The wood is starting to fall apart. Maybe termites.

United StatesWe have no complaints, other than that it is a bit remote and required hiking uphill to get to.
The onsen were very nice and relaxing. The staff were very friendly and accommodating when we couldn’t stay around for the breakfast we paid for the next day. Provided yukata for the onsen and getting to sleep on tatami floor mat futons made for a great authentic experience.

United StatesThe Ryokan is not the easiest place to get to being in a small town in the mountains, but once there it was enjoyable. Make sure to check in ASAP so you can reserve your onsen time. We wanted the indoor/outdoor one, but it was already booked out.
A really nice Ryokan find for our group. The outdoor Onsen was fantastic, and we enjoyed our time in it. The paid dinner was what I expect from a Ryokan and was nice enough.

ChinaThe place is a good place but, It was not ready to handle such a group like us. we were 10 people and they put us in a room that was divided into 2 sections with one bathroom with no shower in it. the second section has the tea table which we ended up removing it from the room and put it in the corridor because we wanted to spread the mattresses to sleep all 10 of us. they should have given us 2 rooms or not accepting us as 10 people. it was very small for 10 people. The second thing is that the place should provide taxi services from the station to the place. we waited for a taxi at the station for over 30 minutes then, we hicked with our luggage to the place. it is not far but it is on a hill so it was not easy to handle.
The hot spring was alright, and the dinner was served pretty well. lots of courses f traditional japanese food. we liked it.

United StatesIt was our very first time staying at a ryokan and experiencing an onsen. The staff at Ajisai were absolutely wonderful and went above and beyond to accommodate our every need (special menu, laundry service, onsen schedule requests, etc.) and made our stay exceptional! The facilities were very clean and well-maintained. We had both the dinner and breakfast service - both were beautifully prepared and very delicious. We also loved the location as it is very close to other popular attractions - Hakone Open Air Museum & Hakone Ropeway. Thank you Ruby, Nagi and the rest of the Ajisai staff!! We had a wonderful time and hope to visit again soon!!

SpainThe hotel is a bit further from the station than you would expect, and you have to carry your luggage over a steep slope to reach there (if you don't take a taxi). But nevertheless, the overall experience was really good!
The staff was very nice, we did check-in quite late and they went ahead and booked one bath time slot for us!

First, a note about the other reviews: Don’t stay here if you’re bound to your car at home and can’t walk a bit to get here. (If you have a disability this is a legit concern, but some of the other reviews are from people who seem to like complaining. They also obviously didn’t know about Japan’s amazing luggage delivery service, which makes all of this easier.) This place is heaven in Hakone. The staff are some of the nicest people I’ve encountered on a trip, so I’m really not sure how it’s possible other people are saying they were rude. The staff helped us with a ton of stuff and their English is amazing. The breakfast was phenomenal. While the dinner is expensive, we felt it was worth it. The onsen are perfect, the people who are complaining about the lack of view are probably beholden to what they saw on YouTube about seeing Mount Fuji from everywhere they go, which isn’t the case. We loved the privacy of the onsen, it’s an outdoor oasis and it’s perfect. Everything was spotless. The rooms are comfortable. They even have Netflix! I can’t recommend this place enough!

United StatesThe room was great. I liked how they gave us yukatas. I was only expecting the private onsen in the evening, so it was a nice surprise that they let us book a private session in the morning too. Overall, it was a great stay and the breakfast that we booked in the morning was delicious too.

GreeceUnexplainably high cost, making it essentially a bad value for money deal. The room felt old and was humid. No shower in the room. Lack of flexibility to ad hoc requests, although to be fair everything that had been agreed upfront was dully fulfilled.
Staff was extremely helpful and polite. Good quality of breakfast and onsen facilities. Spacy room. There was a parking lot available. The location is ok by car, but a bit isolated without one.

JapanIt was a little bit far from the center, however you could easily reach it by walking 10/15m, however there was no sidewalk and it was a little bit dark, but nothing too dangerous. We were 6 people, however just 5 futons fitted in the room comfortably. The water in the onsen was too hot, however I understand that it was summer and very humid outside.
The onsen was very good, both the inside and the outside one. It was very easy to book the onsen, we did it at the time of the check in. We had private toilet. We had a fridge. The room seem very traditional Japanese. There were not many gests. There was the option of reting card games.
