Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

JapanWe were asked what time we wanted to eat breakfast, but when we showed up for breakfast at that time the next morning, we had to stand in a queue for 20mins before we were allowed to go and eat breakfast. It was very inconvenient as I get nauseous in the morning if I don't eat.
Our room had a stunning view over the lake! We were even able to watch the fireworks from our window! Beds were comfortable and overall the stay was good for the price.

Hong KongThe staff manning the front door could have been a bit more friendly, but the front desk staff was sincere and helpful.
The breakfast assortment and general quality were excellent, just that the restaurant was a bit crowded.

AustraliaWe could only access a private onsen by catching the shuttle bus to another hotel.
Beautiful view of the lake from our room. Well located near the tour boat terminal. Huge bed, spacious room, even a microwave oven. We only booked breakfast and there were not many choices to eat dinner outside the hotel, but the nearby soba/ramen restaurant was excellent. Plenty of convenience stores nearby. Good breakfast.

CanadaThe hotel shows a little it’s age, but no big deal. You also need to take a shuttle for your car since there is no parking at the hotel, but the brought the car to the parking for us.
Near the Lake. Personnel offered a room change immediately after we pointed out a problem with the AC unit. Possibility to go to a nice onsen but it is outside the hotel and you need to take a shuttle. Good breakfast.

CanadaConfusing name for non-Japanese tourists as the front of hotel is HANA YUUKA - the last 2 words of the long resort name and we were looking for Akan No Mori.
No parking on site but there is valent parking. The particular attendant during our stay is very friendly and helpful.

United KingdomThe bathroom, as noted by other reviewers, is a bit cramped and dated looking. I can see that some people would find the onsen also a bit dated. I actually quite liked it but then we were in the area mainly to hike rather than use the baths.
I’m really not sure why this hotel has such a bad review score. We stayed in a Japanese room overlooking the lake which was massive and had a beautiful view in the mornings. Parking was immediately outside the hotel and was free, although you had to hand your key to the valets (you get a receipt). It’s a very good location. The breakfast is astonishing. Japanese hotel breakfast buffets are often pretty impressive but this one was in a different league. You do have to be up early to enjoy it though. There are three sittings and the last one is at eight! There are a few niggles (detailed below) but overall I really enjoyed staying here

United StatesBathroom outdated, and small.
The excellent breakfast, located very conveniently to the Lake Akan cruise, and numerous sights like Kamuy Lumina. Tsuruga hotels has several proper in Akanko, and I think this one offers the best value. They will shuttle you to their other hotels that are known for their more luxurious onsens. This hotel has an equally great view from its lake view rooms as the other properties, but is much more reasonable in price. The rooms are laid out in a more quaint Japanese style.

United StatesOnsen in this building was OK but not so nice. While you can get access to other hotels belonging to the same owner in the town, you need to walk or take shuttle to get to them. (Of course, they show these much nicer Onsen that belong to other buildings, which I thought was somewhat misleading. - We never really bother to try Onsen in other buildings...)
It was a really good location, and breakfast was really nice. Building was well maintained although it seems to be bit old. We also had a really nice view of lake from our room.

SwedenThe hotel was situated right on the lake, the position could hardly be better. Had a valet parking service that was appreciated. The room was huge and not just by Japanese standards. The breakfast was amazing. Worth staying at the hotel just for this. The onsen more than made up for the rather small bathroom. In fact, as we used the onsen, we didn't actually use the bath or shower.
