went to sleep without pre studying the manual for the heaters (which you can download from internet) there were 4-5 heaters in the main room and they all make beeping sounds as they were on some kind of timer before they turn off. same issue with heater for water could not get it to work in the morning.

~STYLE: old thatched farmhouse with two irori (floor hearths) ~SETTING: an enchanting 300 years old farm house in the mountain hamlet called Tsurui 釣井 in East Iya Valley, 2000 feet above sea levels, surrounded by sheer steep green slopes and pine trees, abandoned to the elements and saved from oblivion by Alex Kerr in 1973 ~EXPLORE: hike/ drive Iya Valley (known as Tibet of Japan as so remote, or Japan’s grand canyon) “near” Chiiori: vine bridge, scarecrow village ~ROOMS: one large 300 year old farmhouse with two small rooms partitioned. Bathrooms and Kitchen have been updated ~@ THE HOTEL: lots of heaters around, much appreciated floor heating, enjoyed my evening soak in the cypress bath, savored the evening of complete solitude and freedom of being in the middle of nowhere, woke up to crisp cold air and somehow couldn’t get the hot water to work even after studying the manual which I downloaded from the internet. Used the kettle to boil hot water instead. Check in is via doorcode at 3 pm. Staff will come at 6 pm to show you around the house. ~FOOD & DRINKS: bring lots of food and snacks, there are no supermarkets or restaurants around, the closest Lawson is 50 minutes drive away ~PRICES: moderate US$319 ~RATING: 4/5

Luxurious, remote hut with an old Japanese story inside it. A blessing to stay here.

This is going to sound funny coming from a city boy - but there were two exceptionally big insects inside the house which was otherwise very clean. One of the big green insects started making loud sonds at night which was scary, so it would be nice to take extra care to ensure this doesn't happen. However, I realize how hard it must be to ensure that given the size of the house. To guests - BE PREPARED for some bugs, it's worth the pain for how great the place is.

Perhaps the best remote hut stay of my life. I wonder if it can get any better. It's a 5-star hut in the middle of nowhere, nestled in the mountains. Complete privacy and luxury surrounded by raw nature. Lots of history from Alex Kerr. I was lucky to be able to stay here for a day, and I hope to come back in the future.
