Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsNothing. I already had high expectations on the hotel but even still there wasn't anything that disappointed. Finding the hotel and reaching it can be a little tricky (even the taxi struggled a bit) as Kyoto's streets can get small and windy but to me that's actually part of the experience and enjoyment of visiting such a unique city and added to it's charm.
Everything! What I mean by calling this the Geisha of hotels is that it's limited in availability, a rare find and in a somewhat elusive location secluded from the busy Kyoto areas. Being located in what used to be the old red light district. The personal touch of the hotel however is what makes it so enchanting; rich in history, culture and most of all hospitality. It is a lifetime experienceQ I would go as far as to say that by not visiting this hotel you're missing out on a great little gem in Kyoto that very well might be the highlight during your stay in Kyoto and that is saying a lot for a city that has so much to offer. I'm no stranger to visiting some higher end hotels such as the likes of Park/Grand Hyatt, W Hotel etc so I'm quite used to great hospitality, well designed rooms, luxury comforts benefits etc. And while I generally enjoy those hotels I wouldn't necessarily recommend those to just anyone because I know only select few people care about such luxury. I will however recommend this hotel to anyone, if you can even find a tiny spot in your budget to come here I'm confident it will be well worth the money. What this hotel provides however was on a whole different level. One of the great things is that the hotel only offers a select number of rooms which gives a very cozy atmosphere. When entering the hotel there was always someone to greet you and ask about your day, give suggestions or just have a short chat. To me this what truly made the hotel stand out so much. The staff wasn't just there to help you out they sometimes felt more like a fellow companion during your travels. They also did a great job letting me know more about the neighbourhood I was staying in than I could ever hope to find out by myself. I personally recommend the Japanese Whiskey, Matcha making and neighbourhood tour. The personal introduction will ensure they are lasting experiences.

Canadamy only concern was the fan noise from the heat pump/ air conditioning unit. I got used to it the first evening and it wasn't a problem.
The hotel staff were friendly and they gave helpful information and advice for first time visitors to Kyoto. Excellent breakfast buffet Japanese style with good western options. Friendly waiters and chefs who prepared daily fresh specials.

SwitzerlandInternet connection could be improved, both in terms of speed and stability. The room’s blinders when dropped are slightly noisy.
Design, marvelous staff, ambiance, excellent service (even months before our arrival). The concierge, Koko-San, then Mao, Ryo, Yuuka and other colleagues whose names I haven’t retained unfortunately: they’re the actual added value. Thank you very much for your kindness, care and attention. You are an excellent business card to the country. Surely a must when in Kyoto, our best stay in JP so far.

United StatesNot a thing. Enpverything was great and could not be improved.
We loved the design and aesthetics of this hotel. Everything was beautifully done, with little gardens and nice surprises everywhere. Our shower had two walls of glass and the floor merged into a pour of river rock, as though one were outdoors showering by a waterfall, yet totally private due to strategically placed screening.

United StatesIdk if it was the owner. But there was a man who was being terrible to the workers in the lobby. It was a bit upsetting to watch the nice staff being talk to like that. There is no good space to take shoes off and put on at door.
The food, service, location were great. The room was amazing. Loved the heated bathroom floors. Gorgeous view of the river. The staff spoke English, so if you don't know Japanese it's still easy to communicate when you need something. We asked for food recommendations and they helped up book a very intimate local restaurant that was amazing. It was a short 10 min walk away. We were happy overall. Would book again.

Great view to the river and eastern mountains, excellent room with both shower and hot tub. the room is big enough comparing hotels around this location, with enough living room space and working area. love the balcony to the river. one can have breakfast in the room (or your own balcony), the lobby or on the roof-floor. the view from the roof-floor's dinning area has great view of the Kyoto city almost 320 degree view. the staff was kind, and the hotel is modern and new, with japanese zen style landscape in between. already book another 3 nights next year.

RussiaOur stay at Genji was seriously the highlight of our Japan trip. We've travelled a lot, and this hotel is one of the best we've ever stayed at. Everything was fantastic and at such a great level. The service with a personal touch, the unique and sophisticated interior design, delicious food and drinks (local sparkling wine is superb!!!), the rooftop bar, the location. I can keep counting and still it won't give justice to what we feel :). I would like to highlight again the personal touch in communication with the whole Team working at the hotel, because this is what me and my husband value the most. We were in touch with the staff all the time (thanks to typhoon our stay was delayed and postponed time and again), communication level is superb! Despite us finally arriving really, really late (midnight it was) we received such a warm welcome with amazing drinks at a cozy bar counter. Kyoka-san and Shin-san were so kind to stay late and wait for us, then showing us around and having a friendly chit-chat too, Then there were Mao-san and Ryoko-san who were so helpful, kind, cheerful, supporting and just great! We even met the Owners and the Architect/Designer of the hotel who also were so hospitable, easy going and welcoming. The hotel is a walking distance from Gion and Nishiki Market. It's situated in a quite street on the river bank, and the morning view from the rooftop bar is just superb. Side note: you can see the DAI kanji from the rooftop bar, if you happen to comy by Gozan no Okuribi! The rooms are spacious and designed in a very unique and elegant way. It's a mixture of traditional Japanese and Western materials and design elements, with some small, special touches visible if you look a bit more attentively. It's a very beautiful, tasteful living space. Lastly the Japanese breakfast was fantastic! And having it with a view is another pleasure. We really felt at home at Genji.
