Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Czech RepublicEverything was perfect.
The host was very friendly and explained to us how to get around, where to eat dinner, buy breakfast and shared some hidden gems of the area. We really appreciated that he even translated all the instruction materials into our native Czech language and we had nice conversation using a translate app which worked perfect. The house is very comfy, super clean and perfect place to relax. The bed is very comfortable. Thank you very much arigato!

ArgentinaOur stay was PERFECT in every way. The house is so thoughtfully designed and with such good taste. Everything is super clean and tidy yet very cozy and it feels like home. The shower rooms are wonderful, the rooms are spacious, the kitchen has absolutely everything and all such good quality. We stayed two nights and visited the world heritage sites nearby. You can get to Ainokura walking 30/40 minutes. The others are reached by bus and the bus stop is right in front of the house. You have a supermarket 2 blocks away, two bakeries from Which I totally recommend the bread / doughnut with red bean paste and the cakes. We also had a wonderful dinner in one of the restaurants. The host was so kind and attentive to every detail. I totally fully recommend staying here. Wonderful experience!

South AfricaThere was absolutely no issue with this property.
The property is amazing. Everything is newly done and fully functional. There is plenty of space in the rooms and common areas. The bathrooms are fantastic. The view from the room is also beautiful. The property manager is the most lovely man. He was chatty and helped us with our bus for the next day! He is a true host!

AustraliaWhilst close to Ainokura (Which is certainly beautiful and worth a tip to), Shimonashi- the town itself is pretty quiet. The only two Izakaya the bakery there weren't open when I was there (mid-winter). There is a small grocery store though, so you won't starve or anything! And owing to the Guest House's woody, cabin-like interiors, there are bugs about. Rather large and noisy ones too! The host provided a bug-catcher of sorts though, which worked.
The owner was very friendly, helpful and kind. The facilities were clean and plentiful. The room was larger than expected and comfortable. The guest house is a 30 minute walk from Ainokura - though the walk is steep, and involves walking alongside main roads. There's a bus stop a few houses over that travels there frequently enough too though, and I recommend taking that!

MalaysiaEverything was clean and nicely put together! The owner is very very kind and shared some nearby restaurants and way to Ainokura. The hostel is located very near to the bus station. The toilet and shower room were very clean and the room was spacious! The owner also had a heater in the shower room, which I thought was so thoughtful. Would definitely stay here again if I’m visiting!

AustraliaI like it all, couldn't fault property
Very close to heritage sites, 30 mins walk. Beautiful timber construction, timber smelt very nice. Kitchen facilities. Fantastic restaurant only one in town only metres away. Owner Manager very helpful. Over all I had a great stay. I'd definitely stay again if I was travelling out that way. Bus also drops and returns only metres from property so although JR doesn't go there it's easy on world heritage bus. Photo of toilet was to send a friend, it's on an angle and seat is heated.

United KingdomNothing.
Gokayama Base is located near Ainokura Gassho-zukuri village, just a few minutes on foot (there are shortcuts which the villagers will point out). The hotel is beautiful, nicely appointed, has everything one needs for a short stay, is spotlessly clean and full of nice little touches like pot noodles available for a small fee. But the best bit of it all is Gokayama Base’s owner. He is an incredibly nice man who is the embodiement of hospitality. I failed to read the instructions properly, so we arrived earlier than expected for check-in; still he arrived and, with a smile, proceeded to check us in. We spoke no Japanese and he spoke little English, but it worked out just fine. He gave us plenty of tips to make our stay memorable. The next day, for some reason the bus to Takaoka failed to turn up; I mentioned it off-chance to the owner - in case he knew something we didn’t - and in a moment he arrived and offered us a lift to Johana station, without wanting any money. I want to stress it wasn’t something we expected him to do, he just did it out of the kindness of his heart. Bottom line = if you’re in Ainokura, if you want to see this magical part of Japan, stay at Gokayama base.
