Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomReally lovely traditional ryokan. The property is showing it’s age in places but this jut adds to the charm and the atmosphere. Our room had a private onsen which was amazing, especially after a day of walking around Hakone. We also really enjoyed the outdoor onsen as well as the indoor one. We had the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast. My parent had a vegetarian version which had many interesting dishes and flavours and it’s clear a lot of effort has gone into creating a veggie version of the traditional meal which feels elevated and matches the fish/meat version on every level. We recommend wearing the yukata to dinner for the full ryokan experience!

BelgiumWe only stayed one night. In hindsight we would have liked to stay two nights!
The location is really close to Gora station, so easy to get to by train and easy to explore the rest of the Hakone area. The staff was incredibly friendly and polite. The building is very traditional and old, I loved it. We stayed in the Sakura room, we had a lovely view from the room and an amazing private bath (just for us)! We also used the outdoor bath, which has a great view over the garden, a recommendation. The garden itself is pleasant to walk in. The dinner and breakfast were exquisite (maybe a bit much, make sure you're hungry by dinnertime!) and it was no problem for them to cater for us as vegetarian visitors.

IndonesiaA later check out time would be nice :)
Watching the snow fall through the tree branches from our window in this gorgeous traditional property has got to be one of the most beautiful moments my partner and I had experienced during our trip in Japan. We keep thinking back to the steamy onsen, the heavenly fluffy futons, and the overly generous dinner service this ryokan has spoiled us with. Thank you so much for your ourstanding hospitality!

United StatesWow! This was one of the best parts of our trip to Japan. The staff were all so kind and helpful. Our room was beautiful and I enjoyed having a private onsen. I took so many baths. The food for breakfast and dinner was amazing. We were so full at the end of every meal, but everything also felt very healthy. A once in a lifetime experience. So happy we stayed here.

GermanyThe infrastructure is quite aged and I wish they had invested a little bit in upgrading the infrastructure - e.g., we didn't have a normal sink as in standard bathrooms, we only had a tiny sink in a small toilet and a kind of old fashioned copper kitchen sink in what looks like a former tea kitchen. The onsen water felt nice and the view of trees from the outdoor onsen is very nice but both public onsen are rather small, and the facilities are quite old. Given the price, I would have expected a tiny bit more luxury. Similarly, the food was nice but we had several much better vegetarian Japanese meals (e.g., in a temple on Koyasan and in vegetarian restaurants in Kyoto and Tokyo) at a cost of 10% of the cost of our stay here.
The ryokan is almost a mini resort with its very nice garden in which several guest houses and the outdoor onsen are nestled. The location a few minutes from the ropeway station is very good, the staff speaks English, and the ryokan goes out of its way to accommodate special dietary needs such as vegetarian or vegan, which we really appreciated and was a key reason for our choice of this place.

SingaporeFacilities were well maintained but a little old.
Location was quiet and had excellent meals and service. Would highly recommend including the meals in your visit. There was also a very serene garden to walk in, which would have been perfect if the sakuras had been in full bloom.

CanadaNothing—everything was amazing.
The staff were amazing. They were attentive to my needs and really went out of their way to make my stay memorable. The dining attendants were lovely and made sure to explain about the food as they served it. The room was beautiful—I honestly don't understand the poor reviews because I thought the room was super clean and kept exceptionally well for how long they've been operating. Back to the staff, they even helped me put on my shoes at the end and walked me to the end of the parking lot to wave me off. This was definitely a highlight of my stay in Japan. Thank you!!!

IsraelThe private bath might have been better equipped.
This is a wonderfully set Riokan, meters away from the main attractions of Gore and the Hakone area. The hospitality is beyond expectations and so was our experience having dinner and breakfast.

AustraliaValue for money is ok but not great. You might do better just staying at a nice hotel and going to a good kaseki restaurant. As other reviewers mentioned the ryokan could do with a little upkeep. I noticed some rotting timber. Also the room had a strange smell particularly when all the doors were closed up at night. Maybe due to hot spring although we noticed the smell in the room and not in the hot spring.
Very nice japanese style room. We had a room with an onsen which was great. Room was large with a nice balcony area. Traditional ryokan experience. Staff are very helpful. Waiters for dinner very friendly.
