Lots of fish on the menu.

My first stay in a ryoken with an onsen. The staff was very welcoming and the property is quite quaint. Dinner and breakfast were also an experience. Hot spring bath was HOT. I had a great stay - thanks

Unfortunately the interior is a little out dated and we we entered the villa for the first time we were surprised by the look of the 80ths. But in the end we loved it there.

The villa has a privat onsen, which we very much appreciated since the public onsen are gender specific. Having our own onsen allowed us to use it together with our son (10month) and he loved it. Also we could adjust the temperatures the water to his comfort zone. The food is also very good, but typical Japanese. So if you are vegetarian or vegan, I can not recommend the place.

It was a little inconvenient that the bathroom was outside and down the hall from our room for overnight but we knew going in that it was part of the experience.

The ryokan is such a beautiful property and it was wonderful even walking though the grounds and seeing the greenery through the halls and by the outdoor baths. We stayed in the Sugi room and loved the seating area that had a wonderful view of the surrounding trees. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious and all the staff were so helpful and kind. The ryokan was also so close to Gora station which made it so convenient to travel throughout Hakone.

Housekeeping - dust was found collected and appeared on surfaces. The sliding door was a struggle to open and lock.

Despite the vintage wooden structure that appeared to require maintenance and upgrade, the private onsen and the amazing hospitality and services provided during the beautifully prepared Kasei dinner and full breakfast in a private room had exceeded my expectation. The relaxing and beautiful scenery more than compensated the vintage appearance as well as provided a more authentic Japanese living experience.

The futon was a bit thin, but thanks to a second matras, we slept well. The biggest issue for us was the eating times. We eat breakfast at 8.30 latest (which is ok) but our dinner was at 5pm or 6pm. Which made our visit planning a bit difficult.

The traditional Ryokan was what we searched for and we were happy to receive the full experience with yukata's and futons. We had a personal toilet for the room (not in the room itself but we expected a shared one) And we were lucky with the onsens as we could use them both times by ourselves. The food was delicious and a good introduction to traditional Japanese food

The meals was an experience in itself, beautifully and delicately prepared. Would be easily appreciated by adults but rather wasted on my 2 kids (10 and 12yr olds) but you still have to pay the adult meal price. We were the only ones with kids. And note if you are a big coffee drinker, breakfast coffee is abit weak and served after the breakfast meal as tea is traditionally served during the meal.

Traditional 150yrs old Ryokan located in Gora so you get a proper Ryokan experience with the beautifully prepared meals, sleeping on tatami mats and onsen baths. Its a 5min walk from the Gora station/tramway taking you up the mountain to take the cablecars. Service was v attentive.

The service from everyone at Gora Kansuiro was exceptional. They really make an effort for you to be comfortable and have the best stay you can. Nothing is too much trouble, they were all wonderful. The outdoor bath was perfect for relaxing after a long day out. The location is superb, Gora is the perfect base for trips around the area and this ryokan is very close to the station. I read reviews complaining of the condition of the ryokan. Yes it is old so not everything is brand new but it was still extremely comfortable and for us, everything was clean so we have no complaints. It was nice to stay somewhere with history and tradition!

The bathroom interiors were a little old & shabby, a bit of a shame, when compared to everything else. Also the Japanese kaiseki breakfast was full-on...not for the faint of heart! Our kids were up for the dinner, but were a bit spooked by the breakfast.

Our superior room was gorgeous - the highpoint of our 10-day stay in Japan. And the porch opening out onto the enromous garden was splendid!! The kaiseki ryori dinner was amazing. We loved the onsen baths (in our room, the communal bath, and the outdoor bath). Staff was incredibly accomodating.

The bedroom was gorgeous during the day, but had cold bright light at night which made it hard to relax in. We asked for a lamp, and that was also cold and bright so we just spent a good part of the evening without the lights on. Better lighting would go a long way. The baths were very relaxing but a bit underwhelming. Compared to other places we had stayed on our trip, and considering the price of our hotel stay, the public baths were small and modest. The outdoor one was a 5 minute walk, and required an umbrella (that was provided) to get to it since it was raining. The private bath was also bland aesthetically and had cold overhead lighting which made it less relaxing. The private bathroom and bath also didn’t match the aesthetic of the tatami mat room and had bugs, cobwebs, and wasn’t that appealing to go into. Also at the end of our stay they added an Onsen (public bath) charge of ¥300 on top of our already expensive stay. It’s a small charge, but I’m not a fan being given additional charges that they didn’t communicate at the beginning.

We were looking for a very authentic Ryokan experience in Hakone and Gora Kansuiro did not disappoint. The traditional tatami mat rooms were huge, overlooked a gorgeous garden, and oozed with traditional Japanese opulence. It felt like we were transported to a different era of Japan. We really enjoyed putting on our Yukata, and having small snacks and tea in the room. The kaiseki multi-course dinner was nothing short of amazing, and nothing like we had ever seen before. Each course involved fish we had never had before and prepared in extravagant ways. Definitely made for people who are adventurous and willing to try new things. The staff is older and doesn’t know English as well, but this didn’t bother us as they are very accommodating.

Nothing to criticize, we very much enjoyed every moment.

From the moment you arrive, you immediately notice the calm and relaxation of the full environment. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this Ryokan is surrounded by nature- from the rustle of the trees, to the babbling brook, to the birds that wake you every morning, it is a calm and relaxation that immediately washes over you. The outdoor baths are amazing, and for most of the day, I had the bath all to myself. There were a few times when I bumped into people headed there, and so I just made a detour to walk the gardens and paths for an hour so, then make my way to the bath, which were again empty. The meals are perfectly curated and prepared, so you don’t even have to think about what to plan for dinner. You tell the staff when you will be arriving, and they prepare a delicious meal that is unlike any other. Many small dishes build to the main course, from wagyu steak, to fresh sushi platter, to shabu shabu. The hostess takes her time to serve the meal, course by course, telling you how each was made, and how they should be eaten. While you eat, the staff cleans your room, puts away the bedding and leaves a tasty snack in your room. The rooms are traditional, with wood and paper sliding doors. We had a nice area to enjoy tea and look out the window, which we did for hours at a time. It rained on the second day, and that made the day even more beautiful as we watched the droplets of rain gather and flow into the streams, with Koi. The full experience was amazing, and something we will take with us for the rest of our lives.

Toilets and hotspring rooms were not clean.

Room was old, the hot spring room doesn't look appealing because it was not clean. The sleeping room was clean. The general cleanliness and facade can be more refurbished and that would make the entire place look cleaner.

The building is a little old fashioned and in a few places could do with a lick of paint

A traditional Ryokan that really gave us the traditional experience. We booked the room with a personal onsen which after a small room in Tokyo felt like so much space. It was great to be able to have a hot spring bath at any time of day. The food was exception. Dinner was 9 courses of traditional food with sashimi, gohan, cooked fish, wagyu beef and accompanying apeiritfs. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese breakfast with losts of fish, rice and fruit. Even though this is only half board we barely needed anything at lunch time! Not all of the staff can speak English but we had no issues understanding during meal times thanks to miming. Be aware that you will sleep on traditional futons at night.

I think for the price the room is in need of some repairs. For example the paper doors had holes in some of the squares and some of the doors were quite difficult to open. It was also very cold in the room for quite some time as there are quite a few leaky windows. However when everything was shut and we had a onsen then we felt the room was warm enough to sleep in.

The room was stunning, we were surrounded by a Japanese garden and had our own onsen. The staff were very kind and helpful. They catered to my vegetarian diet and provided my partner with a meat version. The room was very clean, large and quiet. The location was very close to the Gora line which made starting the Hakone loop very easy the next day. They also kept our bags for the entire day whilst we did the loop which was very handy.
