Oversoft pillows...however I made use of the firm cushions and it wasn't too bad

Great design & location help to relax me; exactly what I expect of a resort. Well located at/near the geopark/Abunza lava coast.

The hotel could have more amenities. For example, while the architectural design of the lobby was impressive, the bar area was rather small and there was a lack of lounge area where guests could hang out with perhaps light snacks and complimentary drinks served. For the hotel rooms, the sizeable and numerous window blinds were manually operated (I was expecting electrically operated ones at the price point the hotel was charging); had electric blinds been installed, this would have completed the luxurious experience that's worthy of the awesome rooms.

The seaside location and the ocean front view from the room was fantastic. The general layout and design of the bathroom (including the exterior onsen), and the materials used was excellent; it conveyed upscale quality worthy of a boutique hotel at the price point it was charging. The interior decoration and choice of furnishings conveyed a serene sense of Japanese luxury. All in all, the hotel rooms exceeded my expectations.

You need a car for everything you want to do. No bike rental

Beautiful place and surroundings and very helpful staff. We needed to go back early to avoid a taifun. Reception called us early in the morning to update on situation and bring us to the only ferry of the day

They are overly rigid with the breakfast and dinner meal plan. This is the first hotel in the world where I wasn’t able to eat on premise because I didn’t pre-purchase a meal plan. I have visited nearly 90 countries. This is entirely unacceptable, too inflexible. The location is very difficult to reach which is part of the appeal. However, they should provide a free driver for ferry pickups vs. having guests rely upon their wits and taxis that don’t accept credit cards.

The views are breathtaking and the rooms are phenomenal with Oceanside views.

Small (language) misunderstanding regarding the choice between the western style and japanese style breakfasts

The location is outstanding, the design of the hotel and rooms is breathtaking, the menu dinner at hotel restaurant was a beautiful experience. Walk-in shower and amenities were above expectations and of course the private onsen on the terrace is divine.

There actually wasn't anything we didn't like about our stay or the resort. 11/10!

The staff were fantastic. Amila looked after us so well the whole time and really made us feel cared for and made our stay. Our honeymoon was perfect and so glad we chose Goto Ray Retreat. The team even wrote us a personal congratulations and welcome card for us on arrival! Chef Ko Takahira is a real artist and his food was amazing. He sources fresh fish from the market himself daily which really speaks to the quality of his dishes. We would definitely stay again. Shame we couldn't stay longer. Thank you so much Amila and staff! :)

The hospitality and friendliness of the staff was outstanding. They helped us with everything we could possibly need, from car rental and taxi organisation to dinner reservations and recommendations on what to do and explore on the island. Breakfast and dinner were great and the view from the room was the best. The room was spacious, the beds were comfortable and the onsen bath on the balcony was a great addition to our stay. We absolutely loved our 2 nights at Goto Retreat and will definitely come back.

There is no aspect of the experience you will have at this hotel that will dissappoint. The accommodations, the service and the attention to every detail is truly world class. The only possible disappointment was our leaving after a two day stay. In addition to a great room, outstanding meals and spectacular service, the immediate environment around the hotel is an opportunity for a pleasant walk along the rugged black lava beach created by volcanism from nearby Mt. Onidake.

World class comfort and hospitality! This is a new facility that opened in August of this year and is only now being discovered by travelers outside Japan. This resort hotel exceeds expectations in every respect and is situated on the largest of the Goto Islands off the southern Coast of Kyushu, Japan. We visited orcs Retreat Goto ray in November 2022 to celebrate my wife's birthday and I think this may have been the best of all her birthdays. For non-Japanese travelers, the staff are proficient in English and possibly other languages as well.

The room set up. The double room we booked is equipped with a full size bed for 2 not even queen size, we needed to upgrade which we did I and ended up paying even more. The office look blind curtains which you need to pull the string like old time. The noise of the refrigerator.

Good breakfast. We stayed 2 days and had 1 Japanese breakfast and one western breakfast., they didn’t have knife to put butter on the bread, when I asked them they said no knife”, unbelievable. we preferred the Japanese breakfast. Dinner was delicious. The sommelier is very nice and professional. The view from the room is great.
