Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BelgiumSee above, the remote location is charming but public transit to and from the hotel stops at 7pm.
Very cute and quiet hotel, we loved the Japanese style room and the private onsen. The breakfast was fantastic and the staff very friendly. Be mindful that the hotel is located remotely from the rest of Hakone, so you'll have to plan accordingly.

PortugalThough we already knew this, the need to get there in the ropeway made the experience a bit stressful since we went on a holiday and the last ride was very soon. For the price we payed, we were expecting a shower in the bedroom, and not only in the onsen (which require reservation).
Beautiful onsen experience. Spacious room with views to the surrounding mountains. Breakfast was really good and the staff was very friendly and thoughtful.

CanadaWe knew at booking that without a car we were in a bit of a remote location. As it was early in the Spring season the funicular to our area only ran limited hours. We did not book meals at our accommodation and in hindsight we should have, as it was not as easy as we thought it would be to find restaurants we could walk to. We would definitely stay in this location again as we loved our cable car ride over the mountain to Lake Ashi.
Loved our stay here, the Japanese style room surpassed our expectations. Loved the screens and deck area. This was our first stay in a Japanese style room, and we loved it. The staff were wonderful and made us feel at home. We loved the Onsen and used it as much as possible. We definitely r3commend getting the Hakone Pass for use in this area.

AustraliaThere weren't many restaurants around the hotel.
The service and facilities were excellent. The staff, Phuong, was super nice and friendly. We really appreciate her care of us. She gave us welcome tea and a sweet, and even helped us to dry the shoes as we arrived at the hotel on a rainy day. My husband also received a surprised gift for his birthday. The hotel was very clean, and the shared - private onsen was really relaxing with mountain view. Our room was with mountain view too.

United KingdomThere didn't appear to be any other showers other than the ones located in the onsens so if they are in use you wouldn't be able to shower. Not really a negative of the hotel but something to be aware of is the rope stops early so you need to plan for that and you can't use your hakone pass on all the buses. Limited food options around the hotel, we didn't eat in the hotel as it was quite expensive
Staff are super friendly, it was my birthday and we arrived to my room decorated. Upon arrival we got to pick our robes and were greeted with tea and a sweet treat. Room is large and beds are comfortable Good distance to walk to and from the rope way station and there is a bus station right outside Onsens were nice and the toiletries provided fantastic

United KingdomThere was a lot of noise in the night like someone banging or hammering. I did manage to sleep though. There was no tea available downstairs. Every time I wanted a cup I had to go to my room and boil the kettle and we only got 2 tea bags. I think it could have been provided in the sitting/dining area
It was a good location, close to the station but not busy and it had beautiful views. The Onsen was available whenever I went to use it and it was so relaxing

United StatesThe location on foot but honestly I would walk there everyday to stay because it was so beautiful and such a comfortable lovely stay.
Loved Everything! This place was incredible! I highly recommend it. The staff person we dealt with was so nice and her English was good. On foot it was a long walk to get there from lower Gora. If you take the cable car up from Gora to the station it is a shorter walk (that was a nice find the next morning). The private onsen is great, we got to use it twice in our short stay. We bought breakfast and it was worth every penny. I agree with someone’s comment that it was like a Michelin star meal. We had a toilet in our room which we were unsure if we would have or not. I highly recommend this place. We wish we would have stayed more than one day.

AustraliaIf staying in a traditional Japanese room, don't forget to ask for an extra futon to sleep on, as they are quite thin. Not really a negative, just advice for other travellers!
Extremely attentive and helpful staff who did their best with a language barrier. Astounding mountain and ocean view, and a great private hot spring bath.

SwitzerlandLocation wise it is very far away from everything. In order to get to the hotel we took the cable car. Last ride up is 6.20pm - so very early. There are no other restaurants/bars in this area. The only food options the hotel offers 1. a super pricy multi course menu ($150/person) or 2. instant noodle soup and other snacks. We booked the dinner on the first night and were the only guests - so we basically had a private chef. Therefore, I totally get it why it is so pricy. And... it was fresh and good quality food - but I'm still not sure if I'd book it again. The second night, we bought a instant noodle soup that we ate in our room. For the experience, I wished the hotel would have offered a small à la carte menu.
Nice staff, nice and clean rooms, private Onsen that can be booked for 45minutes per session. When booking classic Japanese style rooms they offer extra mattresses on request.

ChinaFirst, I think the staff looks a bit raw, everyone I met is a foreigner so it is understandable if they are not good at Japanese-style hospitality, that is not a problem at all if you are also just a tourist from another country, however, I think not mastering the Japanese or English language may create a small gap in communication. Second, the room is a bit vanilla and small, which is not an issue if you are traveling by yourself or only 2 people, it actually has everything you need, so just focus on the great view from the balcony. but I do find a dead bug in the room, that addressed a small concern. Third, it is a quiet place, but it also means there is no shop around, so if you did not book the breakfast or dinner, it will be very tricky to get out for food, the only 2 options during the night are a delivery service from a local restaurant and cup noodles in the fridge.
First, the location is really good, you can enjoy the quiet mountain vibe and avoid the tourist crowd to have a perfect private time for yourself, the hotel is located within walking distance of the Sounzan Gondola lift station, it is not nearby, but just 10~15 mins walk from the station so it is fine, and it will be even easier if you take a bus to the "Sounzan kami" stop, it will be right next to the entrance of the hotel block. Second, the view from the room is worth all the price, having a drink on the balcony watching the valley and the mountain view is absolutely enjoyable, perfect fine time to chill in this place. Third, the onsen/hot spring is amazing, they have real sulfur and it is one of the best in the area, even if it is small but it is sort of private for you. it is a small public onsen bathroom, but only one room can use it at the same time, so it will be just yourself and your friends/family sharing that onsen room

United StatesTo reach the place, you need to take the cable car or bus. And getting around requires extra 15 - 20 minutes to reach Gora and other places with more shops.

United KingdomThe location is quite remote and so there are no convenience stores or places to eat nearby. It can be quite difficult to access by public transport especially if you come in the evening as the last ropeway finishes quite early, so be prepared to bring some food or eat beforehand.
The private onsen was really nice (24/7 access too) and the Japanese style room we booked was very clean and comfortable. The staff were so helpful and kind despite the language barrier, they took their efforts to help us when I had questions.

GermanyNOT really a bad thing but good two know: The hotel only serves dinner and breakfast if you preorder a couple of days in advance. If you do a short term booking as we did please bring your own food. Next restaurants a not in walking distance and public transportation ends early in the evening. If you book your dinner then you need to know that there are no little bytes available, only one full set course which was around 100 Euro / dollars at the time of our travel.
We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It seemed we were the only guests in this place why it not only was extremely quiet - we also had the two onsen for our own. The room was small, but large enough to store our two bags, the toilet was really tiny. We loved the two onsen and and the great view down the valley. The best, however, was the friendly people working at this place: at the day of departure we had some spare time until the bus was arriving. We ordered a coffee which, however, took a little while to get prepared. We felt bad that we had to leave before it was ready. Not only did the staff give us two umbrellas (to keep) as it was raining very hard. They actually brought us the coffee to the bus station! どうもありがとうございます!

United KingdomBit hard to get to without a car but we managed even in Golden week (Japanese public holiday) Its a touristy area so it’s possible to get taxis. The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the cable car which connects you to Gora and from Gora it’s possible to get the very picturesque but slightly slow train to Odawara (google maps suggested the bus instead but there was a lot of traffic so we found this route worked better) Make sure you check the timetables.
Really helpful friendly staff, beautiful views and amazing private onsen
