Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Netherlands3) They have two rooms and the main dorm is divided by a thin wall/screen to separate the 12/14 beds to 6/8. Airconditioning (heating) works well and you can get onto the balcony on the right side of the room. The beds come with a light and a socket and curtains as usual. I found my bed to be dirty and full of dark/black hairs, which obviously isn't me. But it did smell clean upon arrival and self check-in. The rooms weren't very clean and under the beds is a dust haven. So if you have a dust mite allergy you might have a situation here. There is also no bar to hang your towel after showering, which would have been efficient next to the beds. The beds are really big though, good thing to mention. 4) Towels are possible to rent for 200yen and earplugs you can buy if you don't have some. If you are a light sleeper then this might not be the hostel for you since there is construction going on at the back which makes plenty of noise. Also when another guest has "smells" as in: body odour, food or whatever else, you will smell that in the entire room. I personally didn't care about the fast food smell, but I did care about the bad body odour smell my neighbour bunkmate had. 5) They have 2 toilets and showers available for everyone and are located on the same floor. The showers do not come with any hooks for your stuff, so be prepared to put them on the floor in a tiny basket when you shower. They do however provide shampoo and bath soap. The little tissues near the toilets are also not really functional for drying your hands after washing them. 7) There are no lockers available to put your valuables in. 9) The lady/owner who runs the business could definitely do with a soft skills course and some charisma, but then again I wasn't there so socialise with the staff anyway.
1) I stayed here for 5 nights during my time in Kyoto and found my stay to be okay. 2) The location of this hostel is great if you want to spend a lot of time in the Gion area and other older areas of Kyoto. Since the metro line is just a 6min walk from the hostel you easily get to Yodo, Uji and Nara without any issue. The main centre of Kyoto is just a 15min walk away and is very easy to get to. If you walk past the bridge north of the hostel you also walk into cafe and bakery heaven. 6) In the kitchen area you can make yourself a cup of tea and use the microwaves. They have green and black tea available as well as coffee. There is a washer available that you can use for free and it has powder that you can use next to it. The dryer isn't working and outside it was too cold. Something to keep in mind if you use the amenities there. 8) The service of the hostel via Booking.com was fine, direct and efficient. Upon arrival you connect to the wifi and then call the number on the paper outside the door to get the instructions to enter. I found the process simple and got assigned a bed when having a tour of the place. 10) For the location you are getting and the old style Japan house experience it is exactly what you pay for it. It's definitely not a social hostel and definitely do not expect to really meet people or talk to people since everyone there has their own agenda. I could definitely understand that during the summer this place could be a sauna, but during the cold weather I had it was perfectly fine! Overall a good stay, but the place has room for improvements

Swedenmaybe the only issue was that it was quite cold inside the hostel ? there was one area with a heater that was very hot but in the other rooms we were freezing a bit. but it is an old house so it’s understandable, and the bed covers still keep you warm when you sleep, so it’s not that big of a problem.
very cute hostel with a traditional japanese style in the heart of Gion, Kyoto. you can easily explore the center of Kyoto just by foot or bus because the location is very convenient. the beds are very cosy and spacious, the kitchen area is great and has all the needed supplies if you need to cook. the bathrooms are clean and nice too.

SwedenIt was cozy with the double beds and the drapes help when you want privacy. It was easy to access faucets and washrooms, no issue at all. I also forgot my backpack, but the nice hosts took care of it really well for me, as I already left for Tokyo. They offered to send it by mail.

United StatesBeds are not that huge, and I am not very tall (1.80m), I felt my feet were almost at the end touching the wall. Place is not huge, but you will get what you need inside (washer, dryer, microwave, clean water, fridge, etc.)
Great location. Hostel located close to subway station, park, river walk, shows in the Gion area, etc. I do recommend it for solo or group travelers.

ItalyThe dorm rooms are very narrow and a bit dim, little room to leave luggage. Large kitchen, at least, so there somewhere to hang out if all the walking around Gion has left your exhausted.

PolandNo complaints at all. I will come back for sure.
One of the best guesthouse I had stayed in Japan!Everything was perfect. It’s hidden in a very quiet neighborhood but location is really good, because it’s close to subway station, konbini and near Gion. You can feel the ryokan vibe when it comes to furniture and design. Very comfortable and big beds. Nice balcony. Clean rooms, bathrooms, kitchen. Wi-if works perfectly. You can also make a laundry for free! Affordable price.

ItalyThe checkin process can be smoother. I suggest you follow all the steps they provide by mail. The wooden floor is quite noisy at night. It would have been better to have some cooking ingredients like oil or soy sauce, but the free laundry largely compensate this lack.
This guesthouse, despite being small is really cozy. Super clean, and well-equipped. Free laundry is a real plus. A nice and cheap option in Kyoto.
