Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SloveniaVery convenient location near the Kyoto station, the main transport hub in the city. The host was indeed very nice and helpful, making sure that everything was OK. Japanese style room was spacious and comfortable, shared kitchen well equipped, there's also a nice living room, and a clean and modern bathroom. The last, but not the least there's Maro, the cute and adorable house cat.

SingaporeThe location although is really near to most attaction, it still require quite abit of walking to reach there. However, the host is kind enough to help us bring our luggage up when we arrive! Make sure you luggage isnt too big to bring up the stairs!
The host is really friendly, and is able to converse in mandarin! The room is huge and the toilet is clean! They have an anime themed common space on level 1, and a really friendly pet cat that will roam around the house in the day.

United StatesI wish the sink outside the toilet room had a privacy curtain. Oh, and one of the other guests was coughing a lot and I heard it in my room, so keep in mind that you may need to bring earplugs for sound reasons!
I stayed in a room with (2) twin beds (Western style beds, side by side with a nightstand in between) that also had a large closet storage space, a large window with a big windowsill, and a desk. It was incredibly spacious, which was a nice surprise! The host (and cat) was very friendly, and it was helpful that he could speak a little English AND was also pretty good at speaking Mandarin.

PhilippinesIf you’re assigned to a room on the second floor and if you have big suitcases, it’s going to be quite a challenge to move your stuff.
Maro-chan the cat is the best and sweetest host ever!!! She was meowing and waiting for me inside when I arrived and she liked to stay in my room to keep me company. :) The room is more than enough for a solo traveler and very comfy. The shared bathroom and toilets were also kept very clean! I appreciate the rooftop where you can hang your laundry out to dry. The location is also great - just 5-10mins from Kyoto station. There’s also a lot of places you can access by foot from the hostel, so it’s great! It also has a microwave, fridge, n kitchen that you’re free to use. I appreciated the free coffee corner there. Very comfortable, homey, and cozy. I also got to speak with the owner on my last night and he gave me some recommendations about which train stations would be best to use. Very helpful and friendly! Wish I could have stayed forever!

JapanNo complaints.
The location was good. Guesthouse Umekoji is a short walk from Kyoto Station. It was small and comfortable. I really enjoyed the 'just for fun' slot machine (didn't take money) in the guest common area. There are many anime goods decorating the common area, so it offers a nice atmosphere for anime fans. The owner was very friendly and the cat was so cute!

PolandIt seems to be a general situation in the city, not a problem of this particular location, but you will walk a bit, usually to take a crowdy bus ride... :-)
I reserved _washitsu_ out of curiosity and enjoyed the experience. The host welcomed me, helped me with my luggage and kindly explained the "slipper" rules :-). Nice figurine-themed shared spaces.

PhilippinesThe place is near and around 10 minutes walk from JR Kyoto Station. It is near on many sight seeing locations such as the Umekoji Park, Kyoto Railway Museum, Kyoto Aquarium and Toji Temple. The host is very accommodating, helpful and friendly! You will appreciate the room if you are looking for a traditional Japanese styled room. The room we stayed in the 1st floor is very convenient since we have heavy luggages and it has no elevator. I would love to stay here again another time when I visit Kyoto. It has a quiet neighborhood by the way!

ThailandBig heavy luggage is difficult to take to the 2nd floor. Stair is quite narrow and no slope path.
I stay here alone, at the 2nd floor. The room is Japanese style, very convenient to stay and do anything here. Two share toilet and one share bath room are in good condition to use. During my stay, there were only 3 guests. So, it was not so crowded.

JapanI didn't really have anything that I didn't like, but just a heads up for light sleepers: since the room on the first floor (i.e. the room I booked for the night) directly faces a street, you'll hear the sound of passing cars every now and then. I'm used to staying in guesthouses, so I know that unlike hotels, I can't really expect soundproofing from them, but those who are used to hotels might want to bring earplugs or maybe get a room on the upper floor(s? — not sure if they're quieter, though). Also, for those with heavy/bulky luggage: this is a guesthouse, not a hotel, so there's no elevator. Plus, that 10-minute walk from Kyoto Station to the guesthouse (and vice-versa) might become longer if you're bringing a lot of stuff, so you might want to take a taxi (or a bus — I don't know the stop name but I believe there is a bus stop close by) instead.
For an accommodation that's in the Kyoto Station vicinity (just a 10-minute walk away), this guesthouse is pretty affordable — hotels around that area tend to cost more! I booked a single room, and it was pretty spacious and comfortable. I like rooms that let in ample natural light, and my room was exactly like that. Though the house is showing some signs of age, it's pretty clean and well-maintained. It's also very cozy and homey; the friendly owner's personality and love for otaku culture really shine through, what with the anime and manga collectibles decorating the living room and walls. But as a cat lover, the highlight of my stay was getting to play with Maro, the owner's adorable cat and the "manager"/"housekeeper" of the guesthouse. Maro isn't shy around strangers, and it didn't take long for him to warm up to me. After checking in, I spent several hours before bedtime just chilling next to Maro. The next morning, though my futon was pretty comfortable, I got up early because I was contemplating whether to head out early for more sightseeing time, or to go back to sleep. But then Maro entered my room, took over my futon, and I decided to take a third option: just play with Maro some more. He's the sweetest thing, and I actually felt sad having to leave. Had it not been for the nice weather (I felt like it'd be a shame not to make the most of it and head out), I would've stayed until the latest possible time just to hang out with Maro. Thank you Maro for the serotonin boost... I needed it! Please stay happy and healthy always... I'll stay here again the next time I'm in Kyoto to check in on you!
