Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NorwayWe left 10 days ago and we have been missing Kyoto Compass and Mama & Papa ever since. My family and I visited for the 2. time in May 2024(first time Nov. 2022) and we love everything about Kyoto Compass. Would go back in a heartbeat if we could. We stayed in the beautiful Japanese room and enjoyed sleeping on the very comfortable futons. There are lovely gardens on both sides of the room. I could go on and on about how great Kyoto Compass is, but shortly spoken: If you want a magical guesthouse experience and if you are so lucky it’s available on your dates: Don’t hesitate, just go ahead and book it, you wont regret. Thank you Mama and Papa for having us. Thank you for the wonderful conversations, your perfect advice on where to eat, where to go and how to get there. Thank you for speaking Japanese with our 9-year-old son and helping him with his homework. Thank you for all the love, care and effort you put into Kyoto Compass, making it such a unique, warm and beautiful place to stay. Hope to see you again soon.

United StatesCan get a little noisy in the mornings which is not so great if you are a late sleeper, but the warmth and kindness I experienced here made it worth it!
Mama and Papa who run this guesthouse are so warm and kind. Mama made a wonderful breakfast for guests every morning and helped introduce guests to each other so you never feel lonely. Very clean and cozy guesthouse.

United StatesThere was nothing that I didn't like
Staying at this hostel was an incredible experience that I will never forget and one of my favorite things about my visit to Japan. The location was great, quiet and peaceful. The two hosts were the kindest, most welcoming people I met in Japan. They were so helpful and gave many recommendations on what to do in Kyoto. Breakfast was delicious and included! The shared room was comfortable, quiet and clean. It could not have been a better experience. I could go on and on about how lovely this place was. I only wish that I could have stayed longer!

AustraliaCan't think of anything we would have changed.
The breakfasts had a large variety of items and were very satisfying with attention to our likes/dislikes. The location was a short trip to central Kyoto and the neighbourhood was lovely to walk around with a great coffee shop nearby. We were so well looked after in a homely environment it has been a highlight of our holiday that we will never forget. The beds were very comfortable, and we ate at 3 local restaurants that Mamma recommended which were all fantastic. The guesthouse is close to a supermarket and public transport. The neighbourhood is quiet and safe. Washing was available for a small charge. Thank you Mamma and Pappa!

CanadaThe location and quality of the washrooms could be a bit better, but given that this is an old Kyoto house, it is understandable.
The incredible Booking.com ratings are accurate, this is perhaps the best hostel I’ve stayed at. This sort of experience makes you addicted to traveling. It’s like staying with a host family with a few other travellers. They are very helpful and a communal breakfast with everyone is very nice. I wish I could’ve stayed longer.

GermanyThanks for the fantastic time! The hosts (Mama and Papa) make this place special. We felt like home even though we were on the other side of the world. In terms of bed, bathrooms and kitchen you will find out clean and ready for use. WiFi is available, as well as an assortment of hot beverages and some snacks. In addition we liked the two cats a lot.

United KingdomI don't think I can recall a reasonable flaw for the price, I stayed at some more "expensive" accommodations earlier in my travels and I still had more fun here. Irregardless of the environment it's just really good value.
tldr: Incredible hosts, clean warm rooms and beds, good facilities, got to make some friends, highlight of my trip. Bit of a late review but my one night stay here might've been the highlight of my entire trip to Japan. It's a cozy hostel/inn by itself but the hosts Mama and Papa were the most welcoming hosts I've ever had, they chatted with us and made us feel right at home. The rooms themselves were clean and warm, the beds were roomy and comfortable, and all facilities were there and clean too. It's a surprisingly large, pretty place! Also made friends with the travellers who happened to be staying there, it was just 3 strangers we met over a one night stay but after some games and conversation they felt like long time friends. They really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable - plus they sent us off with a gift of hand drawn calligraphy, ask Papa for a calligraphy class while you're here! Whenever I'm back in Japan to finish my homework, I'll definitely be staying here again for longer this time. Thanks again Mama and Papa for the lovely time :))

IsraelI like everything! The room and bathrooms are super clean! The breakfast is light and gives you the energy to start the day, along with a cup of coffee you get in the morning. You can do laundry and rent a bicycle for a small and fair charge. Location is very good, close the Kyoto Station, and a lot of busses are 3 minutes walk from the guesthouse. The owners are so adorable and caring! They will show you everything good that's close to the guesthouse (restaurants, sentos, etc), show and explain everything about the house, and explain everything you need about the city. The lady knows English very well so it's easy to communicate. You can cook at the kitchen if you wish. I personally made breakfast to the other guests and the owner haha. Very recommended! Also a great value for money.

United KingdomI have been to Japan eight times, and this is the best place I have ever stayed in Japan. It was not far away from JR station, and there were bus stops nearby. Remember to try the izakaya near the guesthouse. As the guesthouse is only run by mama and papa, please let them know your travel plan if possible.
