Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

New ZealandMy visit coincided with an overseas cultural school visit with some noisily participants but when raised with management, I was quickly moved to a quieter section of the facility, without fuss. My first room was a bit bare with only single pillows for each occupant. Would have been good to have extra pillows. It seems that the airconditioning only cater for heating and not for cooling. My visit was in March the tail end of winter so cooling was not an issue, but I would imagine it being a bit warm during summer. However I found that most Japanese hotels are similar. The buffet meals were a great experience for local Hokkaido fare featuring it's seafood and dairy produce. Those less inclined to local cuisine might find choices limited. Otherwise it would be hard to bring up things I didn't like without nitpicking.
The arrival and check-in was great. I like the fact that airport-type luggage trolleys were available for guests to use up to the room especially for international travellers with large luggage. However the entrance width of the lifts and rooms are quite narrow and will be a problem for larger luggage when placed widthwise. Mahoroba is a full-package facility (ie room, meals (buffet breakfast and buffet dinner) included. Pretty comprehensive Japanese spread provided. Its designed and catered for the Japanese onsen (public hot bath) experience with water rich in minerals drawn from the thermal springs. It has a particularly high sulfur pool available. One of the outdoor pool facility looks out to the hillside woodland. In winter, the snow covered slopes provided an experience that is truly zen-like. Very responsive customer service. My stay coincided with a cultural school trip from Hong Kong that was a little noisy. When I raised a complaint, I was immediately moved to a room in a quieter section of this large hotel complex. The decor of the hotel was really impressive with a lot of effort put into detailing the hotel lift lobbies at each floor with elements of traditional Japanese timber architecture. The banquet rooms on the second floor is particularly exquisite with tatami-floored rooms, sliding paper panelled door screens and should be checked out.

SingaporeThey were strict about check-in time, so even though I arrived a little after 1pm, I had to wait till 3pm. It is a huge hotel with so much space in the lobby areas it looks creepily empty, Decor-wise, it is also rather over-embellished. In the room, there was only one electrical power point within easy reach, so charging equipment was a bit of a problem. The strange thing was that the room had a desk, but no chair there. I went down to the reception to ask, and they said there is normally no chair. I had to use one of the armchairs which was lower than comfortable for the desk. This hotel largely serves packaged tourists. Huge numbers arrive and leave at the same time. The restaurant at breakfast and dinner time was like a madhouse. There would have been a few hundred people at the same time. In fact, the hotel reception required guest to choose a specific dinner time so they could avoid a terrible rush at any gven hour (kind of like on cruise ships). The range of items in the buffet was considerable (mostly Japanese and Chinese) but the food was of canteen standard.
The hotel was just 100m from the bus station in the village of Noboribetsu Onsen, so was very convenient. The room was large by Japanese standards. It had a mini-fridge, a kettle and a mini-safe. Wifi was on the weak side, but worked. Temperature in the room was just right, although I don't remember there were any thermostat controls a guest could adjust. Lighting was fine. The beds were comfortable. The furnishing in the room was boringly functional and rather dated. In the bathroom, water pressure was good, hot water came through quite quickly and drainage was good. The hotel had hot mineral baths in Basement 1 and Basement 2. One had 13 pools and the other 9 pools. They were functional rather than aesthetic, though the handful of outdoor pools among them were special (this being winter). Evenings had more people using the baths than mornings, but not crowded at all.

United StatesTo be honest the breakfast buffet was kind of mediocre. Compared to meal experiences that I've had at other ryokan, I'd skip it if I came back to Mahoroba.
The Japanese style room was very cool and had a great view. The futons were comfortable and I was glad to find that the room was quiet even with the amount of tourists that we shared a hallway with. The hot springs were great. Tons of space so we didn't wind up needing to share baths with strangers.

United StatesHallway rugs look dirty. But I understand it's hard to maintain with this many guests. Checkout time at 10 am is too early. I'd like to relax a little longer. Morning bath and a breakfast is hard to fit in the schedule if I wake up at 8 am. If check out were 11 am it would be much better.
Dinner buffet was fantastic. The steak was really good! Tons of baths to choose from with varying degrees of heat. I couldn't last long in the hotter baths, but there was a perfect temperature bath for me. Super relaxing.

Thailand- If you stay more than 1 night, you might get bored with the buffet spread because breakfast and dinner dishes are the same everyday.
- We chose the big room with private onsen. The room is spacious, comfy, and clean - Staffs are polite and efficient.
