Luxurious stay with private onsen on the balcony.

    • Deluxe Room with Open-Air Bath with Mountain View - 4F
    • Stayed 2 nights

Most of the staff were non Japanese and it was difficult to understand both their English and Japanese. The onsen temperature was set to Foreigner temp but they increased it when we requested it. It it was a bit of a walk to get to the station. Coming back there is a steep hill.

The room had an onsen on the balcony, looking towards the mountain which was wonderful. The room was nice, large TV screen and the toilet was 'automatic'. We had our meals in a private room with our friends and there were many courses including fresh sashimi. The food was great and quite traditional unless you requested the western breakfast. The whole place was very quiet. Happy hour had reasonably priced drinks in a bar that is also an aquarium. One of the Hakone bus stops was right outside the ryokan. b

they recommend taking a taxi or shuttle up to the hotel because its a steep hilly walk, but definitely doable if you dont have to wheel around large luggage. also the shower we couldnt figure out how to turn off and had to ask staff. turns out you have to just wait lol

amazing mountain view, bathroom, and room. dinner and breakfast was also good. super nice and premium feeling experience.

The location was a bit far from everything..

Amazing place! We were surprised (in a good way) by the size of the room! The hotel was clean, pretty and the food was amazing! They really did an effort for me as I do not eat fish/ seafood and it was much appreciated and tasty!

Worth it for the onsen, but expect a less-than-great meal

The hotel loves to come into these reviews and blame Western tastes for bad reviews of their food but listen: the meal is not great. It just isn't. Sure, there were some items that could have been a question of taste, but... even as a Westerner I know that tempura should not be lukewarm and soggy and tuna should not be tough and chewy. And if you've made those mistakes, what other parts of the "authentic" kaiseki cuisine are you messing up? They also forgot our welcome drinks. That said, I don't eat meat (although I do eat fish) and they kindly accommodated that, so I suppose I can't complain too much. I don't believe they could accommodate a strict vegetarian or vegan meal though. There were also some small strangenesses that made it feel less-than-luxurious. The tabi socks which we were to wear to meals and around the room were cheap itchy polyester that felt awful to put on. The plants surrounding the bath were the cheapest, ugliest fake greenery, which marred the otherwise lovely atmosphere somewhat. Despite these downsides, it was still worth it for the private bath and the view.

Obviously, the private onsen. That's what we're all here for. And it was truly lovely--the view, the temperature, the size... perfection. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was clean and comfortable, in addition to being beautiful. And we stayed at lots of hotels in Japan and this was the only one with coffee in my room (thank you!!! even instant is better than nothing!). The location is great. The hill is steep, but we managed just fine with two backpacks and a duffel bag, and if you're not sure there's a super convenient bus that gets you there. We loved exploring Hakone from this location. If you are looking for an onsen but you have tattoos or you want to share a bath with someone of the opposite gender, this hotel is a great choice (despite all the negatives).

A couple of the staff members weren’t fluent in English which made the experience less than ideal. Particularly a couple of the meals, when a thorough explanation of each course can add tremendously to the enjoyment of the meal. It was sometimes challenging to get our questions answered. At these prices, a Nespresso or similar coffee maker in the room would be expected rather than instant coffee packets.

The staff were extremely kind and friendly. The kaiseki meals including the provided traditional yukata robes were quite enjoyable. Loved having the private onsen bath in our room. A staff member promptly came to the room to adjust the temperature in the onsen when I asked.

The location is up a steep hill just outside of Hakone Yumato station, so would recommend storing suitcases in a coin locker or having them forwarded to another location.

Excellent first-time ryokan experience. From first setting eyes on the place, there are staff there to help you find your way and plan your stay. The hotel is gloriously decorated and fragranced, and the rooms are fantastic with great views of the nearby mountains and incredible facilities - including a private onsen. The meals were ridiculously good, served in wonderful dining areas and with courses upon courses.

From the train station, there is a coast to climb to access to the hotel. It could be difficult for a disabled person to access without using public transportation (but it's well deserved by buses). We had a new employee joiner who was very very shy (we had difficulties to hear her)

The hotel was very well decorated, with a calm ambiance. The room was typical but in a luxury way with very comfortable futons. We slept so well. The view to the mountains from the private bath was incredible despite the rain and the fog in the morning. The dinner and breakfast was also typical with a parade of traditional meals, it was delicious!

During check out time, there can be a long wait for the shuttle back to Hakone as the hotel is located at the last stop back to the village, and by then the shuttle can be quite full. Walkable by foot to the village (~20min), but harder when it's raining.

Delicious dinner and breakfast with generous portions and many courses. We enjoyed the experience of the traditional Japanese stay with traditional japanese breakfast too. Staff is very polite and attentive, and they prepare your bed while you're at dinner. Private onsen was nice and the water is warm 24/7. I wasn't used to the traditional Japanese shower (done sitting down) but it was an interesting experience. Toiletries comes with like a 8-step skincare regime of cleansers, toners, serums, lotions and more, which felt quite luxurious.

Although the hotel is only 15 minutes away from the train station walking, we wish it had been a little bit closer to the center of the city. Otherwise, it was fabulous! Would definitely stay again.

Our meal in a private room was delicious, more than enough food, and beautifully presented.

I was totally torn between wanting to explore the exceptional beauty of this amazing area and staying in the Ryokan and making use of all the facilities. Two nights was not enough. Next will be three minimum!

I feel sure this will be the highlight of our time in Japan. The meals were absolutely mind blowing! The subtlety and delicate flavour of these traditional meals is amazing. I would absolutely recommend the Japanese breakfast, I am a total convert. I loved sitting after dinner in the bar area surrounded by aquariums and try local beverages while mesmerised by the tropical fish. But the highlight for me was the private Onsen on the balcony, I could have stayed here all night, and a wonderful way to finish the day after a good deal of walking the hills.
