Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

PortugalIf you're looking for a relaxing place to stay in Japan and take in some mountain views while appreciating the restorative effects of an onsen bath and trying some of the best food we had while in the country, then look no further. Our entire experience, since going in through the door, was nothing short of exceptional. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and made us feel welcome from the start. We really recommend you make your way to the bar, we had a lot of fun learning about drinks and places to check out when we returned to Tokyo. The room was exceptional and the mountain view was breathtaking. The star of the show, besides the exquisite kaiseki dinner and traditional breakfast, has to be the onsen. The experience of relaxing in the warm waters while watching the fog settle over the mountainside is unforgetable. It is also very easy to get there from the train station at Hakone-Yumoto, as there are very well signaled bus routes that stop conveniently at the door of this ryokan. A final note of thanks to the staff of Hakone Airu for making our honeymoon stay perfect and magical. We will most definitely return!

United KingdomI fully knew that there was a limited view on the second floor. But I really didn't understand why there were fake flowers there. The view would have been really impressive with out them. It didn't ruin anything- just confused me.
The energy as soon as we walked in the building was amazing and calm. Staff were fantastic. Our room was stunning and comfortable. The hotel style and layout was cool and the dinning experience was really something!

FranceThis is definitely a treat while staying in Hakone. Located on a hill within a very short walking distance from the main street and the train station, it offers a great room with an outdoor onsen with a view over the town. The dinner was very good, although we sometimes felt a little rushed. We came out of our night there feeling refreshed after a very long day walking around the scenic views of Hakone. If you can afford it I would very strongly recommend stopping here during your stay.

United KingdomOnly comment I can make is that basic drinks such as beer were highly priced. I expect drinks to be more expensive in hotels but this felt too much compared to what you'd pay outside of the hotel.
The whole vibe and experience of wearing your Yukata and eating in a private dining room was amazing. The interior decoration was excellent and our room was very large and beautiful. Our private onsen was stunning and we had a whole balcony to relax if we wanted too. We loved coming in from dinner to see the beds made up. A very special experience. We went for the 'Western Breakfast' which was great, you get a lot of food. Dinner was also an experience, it was our first trying trying traditional cuisine, there were elements which were great and some, not to our tastes (different textures to what we are used to) but still a very enjoyable experience.

United KingdomThis ryokan was very relaxing after a busy few days in Tokyo. You can get a cheap taxi or even cheaper shuttle up to the hotel from Hakone train station. The private outside onsen on our balcony was fantastic with wonderful views of hills. The dinner was delicious but there were certain traditional items that wasn't to everyone's liking. Overall, a great stay!

United StatesThe instructions provided on how to get there insist that you take a bus or taxi from the train station, but it's really not too terrible if you're in good shape. There's a hill towards the end that is somewhat of a struggle, but it doesn't last long; it's about a 15-20 minute walk in total from the station. The bus runs VERY infrequently, and taxis are also very scarce, so walking took way less time.
The room was beautiful and the staff was very kind and helpful. The meals were good, and it was pretty easy to get back to the train station on foot to take the local train up to the Open Air Museum. We preferred the breakfast menu to the dinner menu served, but that may have just been what happened to be offered those days.

United KingdomLocation is quite tricky to find. Need to take bus or taxi from Odawara station if you don’t have a car, very far to walk, specially with suitcases.
Hotel was just fabulous, rooms very spacious with all facilities you need, Onsen was just amazing, hot water, fantastic views when relaxing in bath. Service was exceptional, staff excellent. Dinner and breakfast were just top notch. Really worth the stay and can be a really nice relaxing little break in middle of travels in Japan.

United StatesHonestly, pretty much nothing!
Beautiful and quite small hotel with incredible service and food! The evening meal is quite the event! So many courses! You may read some reviews complaining, and I get it, if your palate is burgers and fries, this meal may intimidate you. Those who are a little more adventurous are going to love it! The room was delightful and the onsen bath was plenty big enough for my wife and me to stretch out in it together. And the view is gorgeous!

GermanyWe would like to stand out, that the staff was very nice and friendly and did their best. Unfortunately, there were some things that we would attribute to management that really weren't nice. The hotel was under construction when we were there, this was not mentioned and there were no monetary discounts, compliments or amenities to compensate for this. Arrival and departure was terrible. Getting from the train station to the hotel was complicated, it took a long time and the staff couldn't help (specifically: 1.5 hours of waiting for the bus in the pouring rain, there is no shuttle service from or to the the hotel no taxis to get and back same, 1 hour wait from the train station to the hotel in the Rain; families with strollers had great problems getting with the local bus it was a nightmare for parents) A house in this price range should urgently take this to heart and improve it. We also received an incredibly rude email from the menagement telling us to behave well in Hakone. Saying something like that to people who are on their honeymoon and who have learned Japanese a year beforehand and have lerned to behave good with the people and the culture incredibly disturbed us and incredibly embarrassed the employees. I would definitely not recommend the house.

RussiaIt is Japanese ryokan but in Balinese style. So the decoration of hotel is not Classical Japanese. When we arrived the out side part was under repair construction. But I’m sure it was temporary, not for long time. If you travel by group of people and using bus, please pay attention that there is no space for bus parking.
Very nice place. The staff was very friendly. Food was delicious. The best part of this place is that they have private onsen (Japanese style bath in every room). So you can take bath privately without using public bath if you want. The dinner was amazing with great variety of meet, fish, seafood and vegetables. Everything was served with Japanese style attention to every single point. And of course staying in Japanese style hotel is very good possibility to have experience to sleep on tatami futon, without bed. Also this hotel have bar space. So if you are travelling by group of people you have space to spend time together with glass of bear or Japanese sake.

United StatesThe place was undergoing renovations so the view from the eating section wasn't as nice as it could be. But this was the only issue. I also did not experience the public amenities so I can't speak on how the renovations affected that either.
I debated booking this place but so glad I did. The room and private onsen was amazing. I loved the view of the mountains and the fresh air. The room was the best I've stayed in all the cities I've visited in Japan. The meals were great and worth the price. The staff were very friendly and the bets were comfortable. I would high recommend this place! I would return.

United StatesUnfortunately there was a lot of construction up around the building when we went so things didn't feel quite as fancy as they might have. I also assumed that dinner and breakfast would be served in room, instead it's served in a small private room (so it's just you and your roommate) but you can hear the rooms on either side (they're all connected by this hallway that the staff delivery food via), so if you have noisy neighbors you can hear everything they say. Dinner was alright -- most of the stuff was a little on the cold end probably because they serve it out to multiple people at the same time. This is the only kaiseki I've experienced but I've heard it's a not uncommon problem.
Beautiful and big room with traditional Japanese futon which were very comfortable for the night. Private onsen was amazing, the patio view was decent. There wasn't a ton to do in the surrounding area which was great because we took full advantage of our check in to check out time at the onsen. Food was a fun experience, I think we particularly enjoyed the Japanese breakfast.

VietnamA couple of the dishes weren’t to my taste (overall the food was good though). Also I wish we didn’t have to talk to staff to collect our outside shoes - it felt overly formal like we were putting staff out (maybe their could be cubbies in the lobby instead?).
Came mainly for the view and private onsen. I think it was on the pricier side but we really enjoyed our stay.
