Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaThe beds weren't the most comfortable, but it's a very small complaint given the rest of the experience.
Kana, the host, was absolutely amazing. She let us check in early, booked us private onsens, helped us make dinner reservations, and gave us all the ins and outs about the area. She helped us navigate the busses and told us where to go to get the perfect view of Mt Fuji. She is such a wonderful host.

United Kingdomthe hostel building itself is a charming old building with lots of character, in an amazing location with transport, restaurants and attractions nearby. What makes this place so special is the host Kana-San. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about the Hakone area, and can help you make reservations for restaurants or the nearby onsens as well as give you guides to great nearby hiking spots.

United StatesI had an amazing experience here! The room itself was beautiful and clean. The host, Kana-san, was so accommodating - my sandals fell apart as I was walking around Hakone, so she went out and bought superglue so I could fix them! She also helped me to book an onsen. 100% recommended

SpainEverything good
Kana is GREAT, helpful and welcoming. She gave us useful tips and booked the best onsen around. The building is stunning, an old post office that keeps the charm. The common area is also cozy, provided with coffee and tea. The rooms are old style, comfy with good views.

United StatesWe stayed in the private room with private bathroom. The bathroom is a toilet and sink only. If you want to shower, you will have to use the shared showers or, like us, shower at the onsen. Honestly, the shared toilets are nicer than the private one but you have access to both. They have a little shared kitchen you can use and the main front room where you can hang out, eat, read, etc. The host was so super nice and friendly. She will give you tips on places to eat and things to do. She also called and made an onsen reservation for us. The beds on the floor are actually more comfortable than most of the raised beds and mattresses we slept on in japan. Definitely would recommend this hostel.

Very cool beds with sliding doors. Felt historical. But most importantly the woman at reception was extremely kind and friendly! She helped us book an onsen nearby and gave us a map with good places to eat/go. I would purposefully choose to stay here again.

United StatesNothing. Everything was great.
Our host, Kana, was fantastic. We loved chatting with her and she also helped us plan our time there. She helped book us an onsen within walking distance from the hostel and informed us about closures of the cruise when it was raining. We booked a larger Japanese style room that had a little balcony and it felt quite luxurious for a hostel. Will absolutely stay here again if we go back!

Kana the hotel staff truly cares about the guests and will do more than her duties to make us happy. I would give her mark of 15 instead of 10, if I could. Thank you Kana for the pair of reading glasses you helped me order when I broke my old one. You are a truly a very very nice person!

United KingdomNothing, I can't think of a single thing to complain about.
Superb experience at this hostel. There's not a huge amount of beds which gave the place a homely feel. It is located in a small little village on the mountainside and is easily accessible from the train or bus. Having a double bed while hosteling felt like a luxury and it was extremely comfortable. Showers were hot and all the little things like providing plug and usb charging ports with a light on a little shelf by your bed just added that extra level of convenience. The biggest draw is the host Kana who is wonderful, she was extremely accommodating and welcoming. She asked me about my plans and did everything to ensure they went as smoothly as possible showing me maps, timetables and making recommendations. She encouraged my (likely terrible) attempts to converse in what little Japanese I knew and was truly a delight to talk to. I cannot recommend this hostel enough for those wanting to stay in Hakone,

United KingdomThe facilities are quite basic, but everything you need is there (i.e. hair dryer, towels, small kitchenette). Bring an eye mask and ear plugs as it gets light early and there are no blinds.
The best thing about this place is Kana, the host. She is the most hospitable person i've ever met, she offers lots of recommendations, books restaurants and the onsen for you - she even made me a traditional Japanese meal on one of the nights of my stay. The hostel is in an old building, with lots of character. The location is great for travelling around Hakone, close to the bus stop and train station.
