Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaWe stayed in the cheapest and smallest room. It is way too tiny. I did expect the hot tub be on outdoor balcony but I didn't expect the only shower is also in the outdoor balcony. For April / May I could still stand it, but I couldn't imagine how guest could take shower in outdoor during winter time.
Excellent location, right next to Gora station. No issue even when we arrived with huge luggage and in little rain. Staff very friendly, provided detailed information during check in. Every staff will greet us (in Japanese) every morning.

AustraliaHotel is dated, including the onsen area, the meal was okay and large quantities, but for the price of the hotel, it could be better. We stayed 2 night, they have 2 options for the dinner, so tried both course. The quantities is good but with the high price of the hotel, I believe the food quantities can be better.

United StatesIt was a little too expensive for my liking. I wanted a single room but there were none left through Booking.com, so I ended up getting a double room and paid about twice as much as I would have expected (which I guess I should have realized because there are twice as many facilities and the tub for 2 is bigger).
In-room balcony open air onsen was AMAZING. It is made of wood, so there's naturally a little bit of discoloration on the corners of the tub. But overall it was the perfect temperature to enjoy a beautifully chilly night and a gentle morning rainstorm. I didn't even use the public onsens or sauna because my room bath was so great. The shower was also open-air-optional so I kept the door open and let out the steam which was nice. I was expecting bugs to be a problem but maybe it was too early in the year, I didn't notice a single bug.

South KoreaWas not made aware the public hot springs had a no tattoo policy, didn’t see it indicated on the booking site. Hairdryer in the room was a little dusty. Otherwise, no complaints.
Great service and amenities. Staff were super friendly and helpful. The room itself was way bigger than we thought it would be, made for an incredibly comfortable stay.

Hong KongThe hotel is a little aged so naturally some small mould around the wooden open air bath is unavoidable, toilet is at the entrance while the wash basin is at the other end of the room so you can't do all the sanitary stuff at the same place. No convenient stores nearby so you are on your own at night (though the hotel has some vending machines offering beer and drinks and ice-cream), the neighborhood close quite early at night in November so you have nowhere to go after 6pm (but you can use the amenities inside the hotel)
Room is enormous, balcony offers a great view of inner garden, toilet is at the entrance away from the living area and separate from the wash room so no need to worry if your partner has a runny stomach, decor of room is very traditional Japan with paper balcony door (inside real glass sliding window), wooden bathtub at the balcony with shades so you can have naked bath with your love ones while enjoying the view. Onsen is great with men and women public bath and also 3 private baths that let you enjoy with your partner, private bath cannot be reserve and must be first come first serve, if you want to use the private bath, use it early morning before breakfast, free ice-pops-tickle and yogurt drink after onsen, comes with traditional japanese dinner (fish hotpot or beef hotpot) and traditional japanese breakfast (grill fish with rice), we told the hotel beforehand we are coming for our wedding anniversary and hotel is kind enough to write us a congratulation card and even some lovely souvenir to keep. Location wise it can't be any closer to the mountain train, only 2 mins walk to the train station and 2mins walk to the cable car going up to the volcano and very very close to the Hakone Gora Park with some nice landscaping and gardening. Remember to get the 2 day Hakone pass so you can freely enjoy all the scenic location (unlimited use). Free welcome snacks when arrived and free use of Kimono at the reception (have different color to choose from for men and women).

United StatesUnfortunately getting to the hotel was confusing for me the first time. A few kind locals pointed me in the right direction though!
I liked the open air bath and used it every night of my stay! The location is next to gora station which has the cable car ride followed by the ropeway to lake aishi. Staff also spoke English and were really helpful. They also held our luggage for a few hours after check out so that we could explore Hakone a little bit more before leaving.

New ZealandIt was a bit noisy during our stay, maybe it was local holidays as well, too crowded.
It was a very busy hotel, The staff were ok, but one of the female staff was very caring, my wife was injured during our trip and she not only provided us with a wheel chair to use in the hotel, she also came to our room to drop off some medicine as well, really appreciated her help.

AustraliaWe were a little disappointed that the hotel no longer serves the delicious steam buns in the afternoons, and has done away with the snack buffet which used to have sweets, biscuits and crackers available for guests at any time. The free drinks are also only black coffee, tea or water. No juices or soft drinks anymore.
This is a magical, romantic, healing place! We got engaged here 5 years ago and came back this time with my parents to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The hotel prepared a lovely card in their room which was so thoughtful and kind. They also went out of their way to accommodate some special dietary limitations which was greatly appreciated. Amazing experience all-round from the food, private onsen, spacious rooms, and the staff are all so kind and courteous. The best part of all is having your own bathtub on the balcony, so even if the public baths are very busy or reserved (as was the case this time we visited) you can still enjoy a peaceful bath overlooking the trees and mountains. The location is also very convenient if you want to visit Lake Ashi or do some sightseeing around Hakone, just steps away from Gora train station. There is also a very cute little cafe with amazing coffee (and cheesecake!) directly across the street from the hotel entrance if you arrive early or need to recharge!

United StatesThe property is tired. Old wallpaper and rugs. I was surprised that the staff did not come in to make up my futon each night. I had to do it myself. The futon was ok, but not great comfort as in other ryokan I have stayed at. As American visitors, no one offered to help with ryokan customs or how to properly eat the food. I had been to a higher service ryokan before so I knew what to do. I think this property would be a bit difficult for an inexperienced traveler.
Loved the hot springs and the meals were incredible.

United States1) food quality can be improved. 2) looks like the google map doesn't plot the route to the hotel using the train that is at the front of the hotel. it will be useful for the hotel to give a clear direction from the Odahara Eki. it will help others to save time and money to get to the station.

United Stateswestern rooms were in poor shape. stains on floors and couch. wallpaper at headboard was completely torn across the entire spanse. this room misrepresented on website. western room shower was outside where you would have to sit on a bucket in the cold to shower and outside tub was stained and appeared dirty. we complained and were given a japanese style room which was 3x the size, indoor shower luckily but looked a little worn with tears in the wallpaper. landscaping was somewhat neglected. it may of been good in its day, but not tended to in comparison to other stays while in japan
