Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaEverything was perfect!
Hotel was the perfect location only minutes away from Hakone Yumoto Station. The room was very clean and spacious for 5 adults with 3 single beds and 2 futons and it was great that the toilet, sink, shower and private open air bath were all in separate rooms too! We enjoyed the kaiseki dinner and breakfast that was served in our room. It was a lot of work for our room attendant to bring the extra tables for our family of 5 adults and then carry all the food and drinks to our room, set it up and also take everything away. What a great experience!! I also added the private onsen which was really nice for us to use after dinner and paid 500 yen to choose my own yukata (there were yukatas provided in the room as well for everyone). I also got a 45 min massage. It was really great as we had been walking in Tokyo for 4 days before we arrived so the massage was perfect for my aching muscles!!

United KingdomAir conditioning unit was rather noisy and bathroom facilities very compact.
The room was very authentic Japanese style with tatami mat flooring, futon beds and a low table with zabuton cushions as seating. We had breakfast and dinner which was freshly prepared, and consisted of many dishes. We were served by a delightful room attendant. Hotel also has a good size lounge area and freely available coffee of good quality. The hotel is in a great location very close to rail station and local shops.

United StatesBreakfast was a bunch of mystery fish and there was no variety of other items - I wasn't able to eat anything at all. This ryokan is very expensive (I paid $356USD for 1 night) and I would have expected more/better food for the price. Also, the guests (families) above and around us were very loud (screaming children) until midnight which ruined the calm ambience while we used our bath outside. Also, all of the restaurants nearby closed very early (5pm) so we ended up getting dinner at 7/11 to eat in our room. This isn't a reflection of the hotel moreso the area.
Our room was beautiful, large, and cozy! Loved the amenities in room & our private hot spring tub. Beds were phenomenal. Hotel was very convenient to get to from the train station (3 min walk).

CanadaMaybe hanging a hand soap dispenser in the toilet would help. You need to walk out from the toilet space without washing hands with soap, pass the living room, and then wash your hands in the bathroom.
Everything. The staff , the tatami beds, decor, dinner and breakfast, both the public and private onsen were gorgeous experience. Clean and traditional. Exceptional qualities. Exceeded my expectations.

The room was amazing over looking a magnificent river. It was extremely close to the station and near restaurants and shops. The front desk staff were helpful and accommodating. They had free coffee in the lobby and could hold your luggage after check out.

Hong KongWe booked a private hot spring room and the scenery is excellent outside the bathroom. However, the hot spring is a "weak" one and it just feel like normal hot water. If you have tried some hot spring with different color in Japan before, you should know what I mean. Personally, I have tried a blue color hot spring in Yufuin and the water make your skin smooth like silk. This is the only disadv. of this hotel and it acted almost perfect in other aspects.
The loaction is extremely near the train station. The staff is nice and helpful and the reception can communicate with English fluently. The dinner and breakfast are delicious and well served.

United KingdomThe bathroom and shower were dated but ok if you're not fussy
Located next to Hakone Yumato station and next to the river. The room was spacious and futon beds were comfy enough. They provide yukatas for you to wear in the hotel. The traditional japanese dinner and breakfast was good but they give so much food. The onsens are on the 6th floor facing the forest and you can even rent a private onsen for 50 minutes.

United StatesWe had two perfect nights at Suimeisou. Although it rained a lot in the area, the nice onsen and beautiful views from our room made us very happy. And the dinners and breakfasts were out of this world! Both Reiko-san and Naoko-san served us meals in our room. They were so nice and welcoming!
