Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

PhilippinesThe hallways and the stairs are narrow, I can't recommend it if you have a huge luggage because it'll be hard to bring up to the 2nd floor. I was only staying one night so I decided to leave my luggage downstairs.
I like this small home and I wished I stayed for a few more days. It's cozy and homey, I didn't meet the owners but just the small whiteboard during check-in felt very welcoming. It's clean with complete amenities, and there's a whole kitchen with stuff that you can eat or use. The room and the bed was already prepared, it was very comfortable. Also, there is an izakaya right in front called Kichi. It's easy to find, just look for the tanuki and they are open until late. Highly recommend that you try it if you're staying here.

PolandSome people mention a lot of noise: First night we were the only visitors so had no problem with the noise, second night there was another couple but we all kept rather quiet. However I can imagine it can get noisy in the 1st floor room especially so keep that in mind.
It is a really small pension, only 3 rooms. We had a room on the 1st floor, just in front of the door and has almost all of the walls made of glass which made us uncomfortable at first but than we just felt like on a visit in a typical Japanese house so it turned out to be kind of fun. We loved the location, and generally quiet and peaceful vibe of the neighborhood. We felt comfortable with self-check in, we haven't seen the owners once but it was no problem at all - in case of any problems, we communicated via booking.com.

AustraliaMay be noisy in first floor room if others are using kitchen and common area.
Booked enroute to Shingu I wasn't expecting too much. Hanare is about 10 min walk from the station in an older part of town. Entrance is an old shop front with tables inside the sliding doors (common area). Okumura -san (host) left a message on the white board with instruction on the facilities and locking the doors. My room was a Japanese tatami room immediately behind the entrance and connected to the kitchen behind. Very comfortable futon with air con and TV. Bathroom has full size tub and modern shower. More rooms upstairs but no other guests were staying at the time. Plenty of restaurants nearby (5min). Central to sites around Shingu. Highly recommend...

United KingdomThe earplugs were needed. Despite the guest house being quiet, you could still hear everything, especially if you are in the room downstairs, as you can hear people coming and going. However, it was fine as people didn't arrive late.
Great value and great location. It's an easy walk from the train and bus station, and very easy to find. The room was really comfortable and incredibly spacious for one person. I also had use of the kitchen which was really handy as it saved on eating out, which can be a bit of a drag when you're on your own. The shared bathroom was immaculately clean and there were plenty of towels. The lady was very helpful when I arrived. She even provided me with earplugs because I asked for a quiet room :).

JapanThe house is in a great location in Shingu- a 30 minute drive from Nachi Falls- a nice lively town with all the usual shops and restaurants. The izakaya directly out front was also good. There's parking space too. The house was spacious and fully equipped. It was a great place for our single party, but if you are not used to hostel communal style amenities it may feel cramped if other guests are also staying. There was a washing machine and dryer also on site (although the dryer didn't work very well for us).

FinlandThe soundproofing is not very good, so if your neighbor is loud, it might affect your stay. We didn't have a problem with this (and the whole area is otherwise very quiet).
A great place to stay when exploring Kumano Kodo. All our requests were filled - and more! The owner is great, the room (the smaller room) is very cozy and we slept well on the tatami + mattresses. Even when it was cold outside, the AC/heater kept the room warm, and there was multiple blankets to use as well. Everything, including the room and the shared areas, were super clean and nice! Thank you!

AustraliaWhile I didn't initially want to leave a negative review, my recent experience at this budget hotel has prompted me to share my concerns. During my stay, I encountered a significant issue when I found myself locked inside the toilet. The door handle waa dodgy and was no longer able to be opened from the inside. Despite attempting to address the situation for about 15 minutes, I had to contact the owner via booking.com for assistance. It took a total of 45 minutes, involving both the owner and a locksmith, to resolve the situation. This unexpected incident prevented me from exploring Shingu as planned and led to a rushed departure due to my evening flight. While accidents can happen, what disappointed me was the apparent unwillingness of the owner to offer any form of compensation or meaningful apology during our conversation. I understand the constraints of a budget hotel, but I believe a gesture of goodwill could have gone a long way in such circumstances. Budget hotels need to cut some corners, but unfortunately Hanare seems to do so when it comes to customer service.

GermanyWe stayed two nights at hanare. The room downstairs was not at all what we had expected. It had three walls which were actually those pretty Japanese window-doors, but they were facing the kitchen, the corridor and the entrance room. The room had no window, which I think you should mention in the description. Inside the room there was a couch, which felt simply in the wrong room. There was no space for anything. We felt like sleeping in the storage space and you could hear everyone moving in the house. Even with earplugs. We were especially unlucky because other guests came home late and woke up early ( 6 am) making noise. Sadly we never met any staff or the owner. It was self checkin and self checkout. Personally I wouldn’t recommend staying at hanare.
