Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesIt is a cultural differences so it is a minor thing. I would of liked the option of coffee for breakfast. Again very minor but would be the only negative.
All the meals were amazing! Wonderful local ingredients in traditional Japanese style. It was wonderful to have such a variety of foods for the kaiseki meals. The staff was very helpful in the front and also for the meals and the room. I appreciate the care they take with everything. All staff went above and beyond - front desk was so helpful when we needed help to send our bags ahead to our next stay. The young woman serving our meals was friendly and knowledgeable it really made the stay more personal. Our room was shared by 4 of us in traditional style with futon. The amenities in the bathrooms were great esp the skin care- highly recommend! Regarding the hot springs- we had a private bath in our room as several of us have tattoos- water was amazing to soak in and relax after a shower. We did not use the public hot springs.

Breakfast was Japanese healthy food. Dinner was delicious and good portion. Hotel was big enough that we did not see lots of other guest. The room with private onsen was great. The public onsen was clean and big. Staff was very helpful and friendly.

ItalyI would have appreciated having a description of the menu in English, in order to understand it better.
The place is a treat you can make to yourself. The staff is extremely kind. The traditional room is amazing, although the small table and bed on the floor can be a bit uncomfortable for those who are not used to them. The traditional dinner and breakfast are amazing and abundant. The onsen is amazing too, with two pools, one indoor and another outdoor, and water at about 45 degrees. Very pleasant.

CanadaPublic bath for men was only warm and the outdoor men's bath was too cold.
Food was very good overall - both breakfast and dinner. The in-room hot spring bath was very nice. Really hot but just the way we like it. Room was spacious with a nice view to the mountains and over the town. Shuttle service was good. The historical sites are worth visiting but not too interesting.

It was a very lovely place and the staff were so kind and thoughtful. There was so much attention to detail in everything they did and the food that was included was amazing. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat and will be recommending this to everyone I know. The onsen in the room was divine and it was all just so lovely. Thank you to all the staff members who made it so amazing.

United StatesThe staff and customer service was impeccable. The resort itself is pretty dated and past its prime, but the staff make up for it with incredible hospitality and warmth. We stayed in a room with a private bath which was amazing--the water was too hot at first so we called the front desk and a staff member came and added cool water for us. The meals were wonderful too--local ingredients and a lot of variety. Tried many new dishes we'd never had even after many trips to Japan--this was a fantastic place to stay for our first experience of Yamagata prefecture!

SingaporePillows were weird. place is getting old. Could not stay in lobby past 12 on check out day. Food could be better for the dinner price.
Nice ryokan and Onsen in the room I definitely the highlight. No room service but have a nice lounge with free coffee tea water etc and can work or read a book. Place is in great condition considering how old it is. The public bath is ok nothing special and food is pretty good but again nothing special. Overall we had a nice stay but the place is starting to show its age.

United KingdomThere wasn't anything I didn't like. Some of the food was a little unusual for my Scottish tastes but delicious none the less.
The service was outstanding, this was our first time at a Ryokan and the staff couldn't have been any more helpful. We had to get a little help with the yukata but again the staff were so helpful and patient. Worth the price 100%

Hong KongThe ryokan was a little dated but it was warm and cozy.
The hotel picked us up at the JR station in town. The hotel staff are very helpful. The room was great, our semi-outdoor bath looked out into a little garden. They had a small outdoor onsen, perfect for a cold winter evening. Our set breakfast and dinner were fantastic, as we had a private dining room. The complimentary drinks were a nice welcome for a cold wet day.

United Stateslocation was not far at all but it would’ve been inconvenient for people that don’t have a car, would recommend ppl staying here to rent a car, I do think the accommodation does offer transportation as well which is super nice
Amazing service, 24/7 Public onsen (which was basically private maybe due to us being their off season), and cozy atmosphere with very friendly staff. included breakfast was a treat too due to it being so personal and a different kind of experience

TaiwanIt's a place you can stay and relax yourself totally. Very quite and peaceful place with fantastic onsen. Properly arranging traffic is something you need to pay attention to before your srart your journey. It's in a countryside, not as convenient as that in a city. However, hotel staff can speak English and they love to provide you with necessary information.

PortugalThe room was charming but more dated than we expected. The hot water for the bath took a long time to come out because it was winter. Just FYI for the hotel, currently the photos of the standard Japanese room on booking are switched with the superior Japanese room, you should fix as it can be misleading.
Loved the public bath, the outdoors bath was particularly nice. The style of the hotel is traditional and its very pretty. The staff was very very nice and kaminoyama is a great location to explore and visit for a day. The food was very nice, the meals are well served. Overall a great Onsen experience. They even gave us a present from the gift shop when we said we were on honeymoon. Thank you!

Our first Ryokan experience and it didn't disappoint. We love our room and the private onsen inside! And the view from our room was breathtaking. We also enjoyed our breakfast and dinner. The staff doesn't speak much English but they tried very hard to help and accommodate our needs, we really appreciate that.

AustraliaBreakfast and dinner are really good, and served in private dining rooms. The public bath is also amazing, and soaking in the open air while it is snowing is such a soothing experience. It's very peaceful in general, and it's nice to explore the building although the piano in the lounge cannot be played.
