Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

TaiwanThe old-fashioned ryokan rooms have been renovated to be quite comfortable and charming, and it would be ideal to have indirect lighting to reduce the dimness of the rooms.
The innkeepers are very enthusiastic and helpful, making this traditional Japanese inn, which has been passed down through 4 generations, the best place to stay for tourists from all over the world who visit Ise Jingu Shrine. In addition to being able to stay in a traditional building that is nearly 100 years old, listening to the Suikinkutsu in the garden was the biggest surprise, and I hope that the innkeepers will further maintain it so that it can be restored to its full functionality. The breakfast was heartfelt and the Japanese-style family bathroom was very cozy.

United StatesI’m just not so used to having a shared sink area as well as shared toilets.
It’s an historic family-owned ryokan filled with beautiful architectural features. The hosts are very warm and kind. It’s quiet. The inner courtyard garden is quite lovely.

It was ordinary Japanese family type breakfast (miso soup, baked and rolled egg, grilled salmon with potato salad plus small salad, pickles, green tea) and I liked it very much because I miss it in my daily life.

GermanyVery nice and well maintained traditional guest house. The host and staff are very friendly and helpful. Normally they prepare some hot drinking water in a thermal bottle in your room but i finished it overnight, so I was asking for refill in the first morning. When I came back the same evening, they even put the whole big thermal kettle for me in my room so I could drink hot water as much as i needed, so thoughtful! (it was a cold week)

FranceThe only thing that may turn off some visitors is that toilets, sinks and baths are inside your room. The shower room was also not available, and the baths are fairly small (I wouldn't try to fit more than 3 people at once). Also baths are private and not per gender like most places, so if there too many guests staying you may have to wait a bit for your turn.
From the pictures alone I did not know what to expect coming in, especially considering the rather low price per night... but to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement! Hoshidekan is a little oasis in the middle of... well... a pretty empty area. The building is gorgeous, and the rooms fairly sized (the one I stayed in was completely fine for 2 people). Staff was also very friendly and helpful!

JapanShowers and toilets pretty far from our room. Our room needed AC or it would have been hard to breathe.
This place is wild. You will need to stay 2 nights to fully appreciate it. It’s got hidden parts and you need to study a map to work out the layout. The central garden is a draw card. The owner will show you around. The bath is a strong point, if you can handle the heat!

NetherlandsVisiting Ise for three days this traditional ryokan is a bit out of the center, but still walkable. The atmosphere is great and you can feel the history of the place inside. The shared bath facilities are nice and also the room lovely (with complementary ear muffs if you're sensitive to noise!). Breakfast each day great to get you going and the staff very accommodating.
