Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsIt is located about 20 min walking from the towns center and though the ryokan itself is a nice traditional building, its surroundings are far more recent and less charming. That said, the walk was very doable (also for the kids) and the place completely made up for it. I doubt we would have found a charming place like this in the center of town, which seemed to have more of the standard large hotels.
This ryokan is located in a beautiful, traditional old building and decorated the same way. We were warmly welcomed with tea and the children got to chose sweets and when they mentioned they liked manga and anime, they were offered some english language anime to read which they enjoyed the entire stay. My daughter and I were offered to try on kimono’s, but unfortunately we didn’t have time for it. The in-house onsen is also beautiful. It was our first onsen experience and though it is a shared space (men and women separated) most of the mornings we had it to ourselves which was nice to get comfortable with this Japanese bathing practice. Also the breakfast was fantastic and felt more like a dinner the way it was served. Both western and Japanese style were available. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, those behind the reception and those serving breakfast. What was particularly useful for us, was that they had a room for 5. With 3 children we often end up having to book 2 rooms, but we had one room with 3 futons for the kids and a separate bedroom with a 2-person bed for the parents.

GermanyThis was one of the best Hotels we booked in Japan , we had only one night and we would have loved to have more nights in the hotel , the Hospitality of the staff is unique , very friendly , attentive and makes you feel very special , they give lots of attention to your comfort and satisfaction , we loved the people working there , you can build up friendships very easily in there which makes it unique .They helped us to rent a car when we were disparate , but they were very patient and could make it possible . The hotel has a beautiful Onsen and beautiful japaneese rest area at the entrance . The room was very specious , relaxing and I loved the heated cover under the dining Table , In this Hotel I could relax , enjoy the people and have a great traditional breakfast . I would highly recommend and will book again if we are to visit again Takayama :)))

FranceThe only point is maybe the location of the hotel that is a little far from main activities.
Kindness of the personnel and service. Cleanliness. Typical japanese house and commodities. Futon used to sleep but very comfortable. We were proposed to be driven to the station since no taxi was available because of the festival period.

This ryokan in Takayama is absolutely gorgeous, and the staff could not have been more pleasant. They speak English as needed, and if they don’t know something they’ll use Google translate readily. The experience of the tatami rooms and indoor Ibsen was relaxing, and the breakfast meal was to die for. Location-wise, it’s a pleasant, 20-minute walk from the train station, which lets you experience everyday Takayama instead of the tourist trap of the old town. It’s also very nearby Hida no Sato, which lets you experience the magic of Shirakawa-go but right within Takayama. We enjoyed that beauiful walk, just 15-20 min nearby.

AustraliaSlightly out of town with about a pleasant and easy stroll approximately 20-25min from town. Short taxi ride, ~¥1000. Absolutely worth it for those who aren't dissuaded by this.
We're a travelling couple with a small child and our visit to Takayama was a highlight within Japan for us. The experience was made especially memorable with the exceptional hospitality provided while staying at Iroriyado Hidaya. The ryokan has limited capacity and therefore provides a very homely vibe with communal areas and facilities including a relaxing onsen. The spacious rooms provided plenty of privacy and comfort. Staff were courteous, helpful and respectful and accompanying us with our child. Optional breakfast is highly recommended. There are so many smaller and finer details about the facility and hospitality that made this stay a trip highlight.

United StatesHospitality of the staff exceeded expectations from the moment you arrive. Free tea service and snacks. Traditional rooms and facilities - quiet, clean, and comfortable. Has a homey feel - a slice of Japanese life. Each room has its own toilet and sink; showers are located in the public bath area. Location of the inn is great - not too far from the city center, about a quick 5 min cab ride from Takayama station or a 25-min walk. There's a fantastic restaurant about a 5-min walk from the inn. Can also walk to Hida no sato, the open air museum. Definitely opt for the Japanese breakfast option in the morning. Would love to return one day.

My stay at this ryokan in Takayama was nothing short of amazing! The staff exceeded all expectations, providing exceptional service that truly made me feel welcome and pampered. The private onsen, crafted entirely in wood, was a serene oasis that I enjoyed every day, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and tranquility. And let's talk about the breakfast – an absolute must! The spread was exquisite, showcasing the best of local flavors and culinary expertise. While the ryokan is located a bit away from the city center, this only adds to its charm, allowing guests to experience a quieter, more authentic side of Takayama while breathing in the fresh air. Without a doubt, this was the highlight of my trip, and I can't wait to return. The staff even helped arrange a massage, further enhancing my experience. And my room? It was a dream come true, embodying everything I imagined a traditional ryokan to be. Don't hesitate – book your stay here now. You won't regret it!

AustraliaLocation is far out of town. No issue if you have a car, or like walking through the less glamorous part of town. Road noise didn’t bother us at all. Curfew is a bit inconvenient if you wanted to explore late in the evening.
To address the confusion on booking.com listing, our room had a private toilet and shared traditional bath, which was lovely. As foreign travellers we booked this seeking a more traditional experience. It definitely delivers in that sense, although this traditional experience may not appeal to many. The hot baths were great. We were at the end of winter and we had the lovely bathing facility to ourselves. The staff go out of their way to be hospitable, and the staff were competent in using translation apps. Traditional clothing was fun. The room was large and traditional. Japanese traditional beds were more comfortable than western beds.

United StatesMy husband and I visited Japan for 20 days and this was one of our favorite places! It is an incredibly beautiful, well cared for traditional ryokan. The building is old, but that gives it so much character! The staff here were exceptional. They were incredibly kind and so friendly we felt very well taken care of during our stay. The onsens were beautiful as well! Also the futons they had were some of the most comfortable beds we slept in during our entire trip to Japan! I really can't recommend this ryokan enough!

Good traditional Ryokan with super friendly staff that go out of their way to make it comfortable for you. There is an onsen in which you can comfortably relax in after the day and each morning you can choice your breakfast. We had both Japanese and Western style and off course the Japanese is the best. They are big breakfasts. The rooms are big.
