Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesI wish I had spent more time here! No complaints.
Easily one of the highlights of our stay in Japan. This traditional Machiya was comfortable, beautiful, and conveniently located to the train station. The bath, futon, kitchen were all excellent. Aside from the villa itself, Hitty was an amazing host. He met us at the property (in late morning), and took time to explain it to us. Not only that, but he gave us an amazing overview of the history of the area, how his family and the property fit in, and gave us some great recommendations for tourism and dining, including maps. His wife left a beautiful floral arrangement. We followed his dinner recommendation and had a delicious and fun meal nearby at a yakiniku restaurant that we still think about.

United StatesThis honestly was probably the highlight of my entire trip. It really felt like Hitty, the host, did everything possible and more to make our trip here a special and memorable one. It was really great to engage in the culture in a way that the rest of my trip was lacking and it was nice to talk to a Japanese person passionate about so many things. He educated us on his family's history as well as Japanese history in general in an extremely genuine way. Talking to him, I remarked how crazy it was that many of the items in the property were older than my home country, United States. The building itself you could tell was dripping in memories and history and it was extremely fulfilling to engage in the Japanese culture past the surface. I can't thank Hitty enough for the stay and hospitality shown to us staying at his property. I definitely would stay here again as it was a large place, rich in culture, center to many things in Kanazawa, and a very unique stay with the host's family history embedded here. Even despite the age of the building, it was still very comfortable to stay here and the bathroom itself was another highlight. It really was just a beautiful experience staying here and I cannot wait to come back. Thanks again to Hitty for making our trip so memorable.

AustraliaThose noise at night from the train and street crossing was a little loud. Nothing that ear plugs and an eye mask won’t fix though.
We loved our host Hitty. He was very responsive and gave us excellent recommendations. Staying in his ancestors home with so many hidden treasures was such a treat and delight!

United StatesNothing!
This was definitely our favorite place to stay during our 6 weeks in Japan. The house is charming and spacious, with both the ambiance and artistic touches of its samurai past and modern conveniences for comfort. We loved that all the main living spaces were tatami rooms and there were very comfortable futons for sleeping. The Japanese bath was amazing - a deep tub for soaking, plus a modern shower and high- tech toilet. Everything was spotlessly clean. The best part, though, was the owner, Hitty, who welcomed us and took the time to explain the history of the house and offer suggestions for our time in Kanazawa. We will take home great memories of our time here!

The house is incredible. Mr. Hitoshi Konishi is very welcoming, kind and attentive. He gave us a tour of his house, explaining us its history. This Machiya is authentic and we felt its soul. The house is traditional with modern comforts. It is very well equipped and very clean! This is the best place we have been in Japan! Mr Hitty, you are welcome to Nancy ;) Vincent & Jean Philippe

Mr Hitty, the host, was a most genial gentleman. We really enjoyed his sharing of the samurai history of this heritage house, right down to the items he carefully stored and proudly showed to us . There is so much history in every object , delighting the history buffs in us. We appreciate the little touches of hospitality such as his wife's beautiful ikebana to add a touch of classic aesthetics to the home. He checked in on us during our stay to ensure that our comfort was catered to. We really enjoyed ourselves in the lovely city of Kanazawa!

AustraliaThis stay was one on the highlights of our trip to Japan. It was a beautiful house that combined the beauty of an historic home with contemporary style kitchen and bathroom. The host was a lovely gentleman who shared interesting information about the home and welcomed our family on arrival. Our family of 5 were so warm and comfortable during our stay. The location was a short walk to the train station and restaurants. Highly recommend this property.

AustraliaNothing. Perfect stay (apart from the earthquake 😲)
If visiting Kanazawa you MUST stay at Hitty San's Samurai House. Hitty is the most gracious host, taking personal care of us during our stay, which happened to coincide with the 2024 earthquake. They certainly build 140 year old Samurai houses strong! Hitty meets you in person to show you the inn and explains the history of the property. Super interesting. We were a family group of 5 and the accommodation could not have been better for us. Excellent location just a short walk from the station and easy reach of all the major sites. Do not fail to book this property. It is a must do and Hitty San is a true Samurai gentleman. Arigatou gazaimashita!

SingaporeJust a shame we only booked 1 night stay in this house. Should have stayed longer!
This is my absolute favorite stay in my Japan trip! Location wise, it’s right next to the central station, very easy to find. The host Mr. Hitty is very welcoming, friendly and goes out of his way to ensure we have a pleasant stay. The futons are comfy, bath and shower are clean and nice as well. When we first arrived, Mr Hitty was already out waiting for us and gave us a comprehensive tour of the place in English! He explained the history of this family house, the samurai culture and gave us a sneak peak of his family treasure :) Mr Hitty also showed us many places worth of visit and has created a cute map with restaurant contact details. He gave us his number and welcomes questions at all times. If I come back to Kanazawa again, I’d definitely come back to this house again. The place is a wonder. Absolute star!

AustraliaThe only improvement areas are double glazed windows to reduce road noise and wish the toilet and shower area are closer to bedrooms but this is heritage building, so understand the limitations
It’s a traditional samurai house with ryokan style hotel. Spacious, renovated old house. Hitty, the host is exceptional. He stayed with us for 1.5 hours to explain the house, the tradition, his samurai ancestors and giving us tips for restaurants, what to see and next holiday stops. To top it all, he left a sake to keep us warm during the cold winter nights.

United StatesNothing was a problem for us. The building is close to izakaya and a busy road so the noise may be bothersome to some but we did not mind. It's actually much quieter and more peaceful than you would expect for the location. The stairs are steep and the ceiling is low so large people or people with mobility issues should probably not stay here
Beautiful historic home very close to the train station. I've never stayed anywhere so interesting. The owner is absolutely lovely and meeting him and learning about the home was worth the trip to Kanazawa alone. The only regret we have was not staying longer. I'd definitely recommend you visit.

PolandWe have eagerly looked forward to staying in this house ever since we first saw it on the website. While we had read the reviews beforehand, they did not fully prepare us for the exceptional hospitality and generosity shown by Hitty. The house is akin to a time capsule, preserving everything in a traditional and authentic manner, yet providing all the modern amenities we desired, especially during the hot and humid Japanese summer. Hitty warmly greeted us and gave us a tour, even though we arrived earlier than planned. He passionately shared the house's history, captivating stories about Kanazawa, the Kaga and Maeda clans, and even showed us the attic with weapons and other Kaga clan artifacts. To add to the charm, his wife had thoughtfully arranged two beautiful ikebana creations that delighted our senses. After having explored a large part of Japan in the days prior, it was truly a pleasure to slow down, relax a bit, and savor the essence of the slow life that Japan is renowned for. The tea-making set and delightful tea blend at our disposal, served in Edo-era tea cups, enhanced our experience. The luxurious bath in the tall iron tub was equally enjoyable. We only wish we had more time to fully immerse ourselves in Kanazawa, perhaps delving into some of the many books on the bookshelves or dining at more of the local restaurants, all thoughtfully compiled in Hitty's list with his personal recommendations. Hitty's generosity as a host far exceeded our expectations, and we are immensely grateful for the time and heart he has invested in this place. It is evident that this endeavor means more to him than just a business. He is an extraordinarily genuine person, and the meaningful conversations we had will be cherished memories. Without a doubt, we will visit again, next time for a more extended stay. This experience has been one of the absolute highlights of our 15-day trip, and I cannot recommend it highly enough!

The manager, Hitty, was very helpful and ready to give a tour/history run down of the beautiful home. His wife had also prepared traditional flower arrangements for our one night stay! The house was very clean and had lots of amenities from a kitchen to a reading room. Hitty also provided suggestions for food and tourist/local spots depending on what you are looking for. United StatesThe street outside the house can be a bit noisy.
We are so happy we listened to other people's reviews and on an impulse, booked 3 nights in Kanazawa, between trips to Tokyo and Kyoto. This house and Kanazawa became a highlight of the trip. The city is beautiful and we had so much fun touring the geisha and samurai districts. But also, we were so impressed that many of the treasures that we saw in the samurai houses we could tour were actually in our home rental. It was such a fun and memorable place to stay. It is a little tight and there are stairs and things are delicate, so I don't know if I'd recommend if you have little, little ones. But it was great for our family where our youngest is 8. Also, good air conditioning!

United KingdomNot really a negative, but the house faces a main road, and the train tracks are nearby. So if you are a light sleeper it can be quite noisy. However it did not bother us. I would happily stay there again.
Being warmly welcomed by Hitty at the door who gave us a superb introduction to the house, it's history and the treasures within. The house itself was wonderfully traditional with lots of beautiful personal touches, yet had all the mod cons that one would need. We enjoyed our stay very much and the gift of sweet treats. A big thank you to Hitty and his wife for coming out late at night to help us sort out the dryer. Unexpected but very much appreciated.
