Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

IrelandThe most beautiful place I've ever stayed in. Staying here was a highlight of our trip to Japan. The staff are incredibly kind and welcoming and the hotel is just beautiful. The food was delicious and some of the best we had in Japan. Would 100% recommend staying here, its absolutely amazing.

United KingdomThere were some fairly old AC units and the one in our bedroom made some fairly loud noises. We eventually had to turn it off from the plug socket to make it stop. Our experience would have been perfect were it not for that.
We loved the beautiful, near-400 year old aesthetic of the whole place. The onsens were fantastic and the room was just incredible: Spacious, traditional and with its own hot spring bath - it took our breath away when we first saw it. The meals you get there are impressive - certainly on the large side too so make sure you're hungry! The views of the mountains surrounding the hotel were just breathtaking.

JapanI've visited a bunch of ryokans in Japan so far and this one was unlike anything else. The room was spacious and comfortable. The lounge with quiet jazz is perfect to relax after a midnight dip in an open-air onsen. Lovely dinner too. It feels like a museum sometimes thanks to various historical artifacts on display.

The property was exquisite. It exceeded our expectations. The staff were wonderful and extremely helpful. We had a private bath off our living room which was so relaxing and peaceful. We felt all the stress of city life leave our bodies. Our hostess Rampa was most kind, gracious and helpful. We definitely hope to come back. This place really is magical and special.

United Stateswe had quite a few spiders in our room, mainly because it was a room on the outer edges of the complex. These spiders were pretty large, but once we called the front desk, they were able to take care of it immediately
onsen was so nice, it's a natural hotspring, so don't be surprised by the filaments in the water. dinner and breakfast were delicious! the amenities in the public onsen were really nice as well as the public snacks within the common areas. everything was zen and relaxing! The staff were incredibly kind and accommodating which made the experience even better.

United KingdomNothing! Wish we booked in another night!
Steeped in history - 300 years old, but wonderfully maintained! Staff were also great, from little touches like greeting us at the outside entrance (timing it with the bus schedules!) to being super accommodating with booking the private onsen. We didn’t realise onsens close at 10am and don’t reopen until 3pm (for cleaning) wanted to get a soak in before we checked out and missed the last booking - fortunately they let us have a quick soak before we checked out. Food was also amazing, and although it’s expensive, it’s worth the money! Wish we checked in earlier to chill and fully try out the amenities - nice tea/snack/wine/sake bar all included with the stay.

United KingdomNothing. It was perfection.
Wow! This place was amazing! Such a magical experience from the moment we got there. The room, facilities, food and overall experience are hard to describe and the photos do not do it justice. Everything was exceptional. I didn’t think this place could possibly live up to the amazing reviews it consistently gets but it surpassed my expectations. A completely wonderful place to stay on the last night of our honeymoon and one I will never forget.

United StatesIt is a bit out of the way if you want to see lots of Hakone — but I really did not mind! I never wanted to leave anyway.
This was perhaps the most magical place I have ever stayed! The food was incredible (as good as some Michelin star kaiseki we tried), the private onsen were gorgeous and easy to book. We spent hours reading and drinking free sake in the tranquil shared spaces. It felt like we had spent a week relaxing after only a day.

United StatesNothing! The only suggestion I would offer is to provide a (paid) shuttle from Odawara Station as the bus can be packed/uncomfortable.
Everything! The staff from the moment we walked up to the property took every opportunity they could to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. From check-in to check-out, every one of our wants and needs were fulfilled. The room was spectacular! Very spacious, well appointed, and had a beautiful view of the gardens. Plus, our in-room hot spring bath was amazing. Dinner as well as breakfast were massive with 10+ courses, each better than the last. Complimentary snacks, and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) were available in the lobby self serve at all hours. The cherry on top was the onsens available, both the public baths, the one inside our room, as well as the complimentary private onsen available. The hotel is on the higher end of Ryokans in the Hakone area, but the saying “you get what you pay for” rings especially true here. Matsuzakaya Honten was worth every penny!

FranceNothing everything was amazing.
I had a lot of doubts booking this place because their marketing is not the best. Looking at the picture and their website this place looks very old and not so modern or refreshed. BUT going there was really the best experience because it is absolutely not the case : You will have the real Ryokan experience in a place where you will be 5 stars treated (From welcome to service to all the offered amenities), and at the same time that has history (More than 300yo). It is very cleaned, rooms have a lot of space. The half board is exceptional, had the best authentic dinners and breakfast of our trip (drinks are included). It is well located to discover beautiful Ashi lake. You will have also your Onsen experience, you can book for free a private one (they have a lot so you will have yours for sure). We are used to modern 5stars hotel service and we were absolutely not disappointed.
